The host immune response to Helicobacter pylori infection might be of importance with regard to the outcome of infection by this organism, e.g., to explain why only a proportion of infected subjects develop peptic ulcers. In this study we have analyzed the local response of different cytokines-i.e., the proinflammatory interleukin-1beta, (IL-1beta), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and IL-8; the immunoregulatory gamma interferon (IFN-gamma); and IL-4; and the anti-inflammatory transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta)-in antral biopsy specimens from H. pylori-infected duodenal ulcer (DU) pa

Helicobacter pylori is associated with different diseases: duodenal ulcer, rosacea, ischaemic heart disease and gastric cancer. Given the abnormal immunological response and the high prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in diabetic patients, we conducted a study on H. pylori prevalence among these patients. We designed a case control study of a population-based cohort. Eighty insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients with an average age (24.05 +/- 8.3 years), and 100 control subjects (25 +/- 7.1 years) were selected to verify the seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori in these popu

The role of Helicobacter pylori in gastric carcinogenesis is a subject of an increasing interest. In this report we describe a prospective study on the resected stomachs to establish the prevalence of H. pylori in different types of gastric carcinoma. The material consisted of 62 consecutive patients operated on stomach adenocarcinomas Fifty six percent of the patients were intestinal type, 34%--diffuse type and 10%--mixed type. The presence of H. pylori was studied in specimens from surgically removed stomachs. The conformation of the bacterial infection was done by means of rapid urease test

Accumulating evidence has implicated Helicobacter pylori, an established cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer, in the etiology of gastric cancer. Control of this infection would reduce the occurrence of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer and might substantially lower the risk of stomach cancer as well. The public health impact of this infectious agent warrants efforts to identify preventive measures. This paper reviews the evidence linking H. pylori infection to gastric cancer and evaluates the potential for control in high-risk populations. Current obstacles to H. pylori control are di

Helicobacter pylori infection has been implicated in the development of chronic active gastritis and gastric neoplasms (ie, mucosa-associated lymphoid tumors and adenocarcinoma). The potential association between esophageal H pylori infection with Barrett's esophagus-associated adenocarcinoma has not been previously studied. Nineteen cases of adenocarcinoma arising in Barrett's esophagus were examined for the presence of H pylori. Barrett's esophagus was defined by the presence of metaplastic specialized-type epithelium (gastric-type epithelium with goblet cell metaplasia) in the distal esopha

BACKGROUND: Familial clustering of Helicobacter pylori infection has been reported. We tested the hypothesis that simultaneously treating all Helicobacter pylori positive family contacts of infected symptomatic children results in lower treatment failure.
METHODS: Relatives of 47 children (index) with Helicobacter pylori gastritis had endoscopy to assess prevalence of infection in first degree cohabiting relatives. Controls included 60 children with dyspepsia and Helicobacter pylori gastritis whose infected family contacts were not treated. Index children, siblings younger than 18 years of ag

Three genera of parasites are known or suspected risk factors for cancer in humans: Schistosoma, Opisthorchis and Clonorchis. No adequate information is available on the determinants of infections related to social class. Infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is an important cause of stomach cancer. Studies, in particular from the United Kingdom and the United States of America, strongly suggest that social class factors, especially those acting during childhood, are determinants of the infection, with odds ratios of seroprevalence of the order of 1.5-5 for lower social class as com

We performed surgical treatment on normal ddY mice before Helicobacter pylori inoculation. The treatment was expected to obstruct bacterial flow out of the stomach and increase the chance of bacterial attachment to the gastric epithelium in mice. The bacterial challenge induced inflammation in the stomach. H. pylori was recovered from the stomach throughout the observation period. Lactobacilli and streptococci tended to relate to the increase in number of H. pylori recovered. Pretreatment with atropine was considered to confuse the gastric flora and affect the number of H. pylori recovered. Th

Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative bacterium which accounts for the development of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer in man. In this review, emphasis has been laid on the role of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of the H. pylori cellular wall in the pathogenesis of gastroduodenal disease. H. pylori LPS exhibits a reduced endotoxic potency in terms of pyrogenicity, lethality, toxicity, mitogenicity, cytokine (CK) release and chromogenic limulus amebocyte lysate assay. This low biological activity of the LPS could be ascribed to the underacylation and underphosphorylation pattern of the lipid A bac

The diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection represents a fundamental step for a correct clinical approach to the patient with gastritis, peptic ulcer or gastric adenocarcinoma or lymphoma. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy has first to be made in order to obtain gastric juice and mucosal biopsies, where Hp can be found. Two different procedures are recommended to diagnose Hp infection (e.g. urease test and histology or culture). The identification of specific DNA sequences with the polymerase chain reaction represents a sensitive and specific method to diagnose Hp infection. Serum anti Hp an

The article is devoted to investigation of the Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in 14 patients after resection of the stomach for ulcers of the gastroduodenal zone. Different methods were used for the assessment of the state of the gastric stump and gastroenteric anastomosis in the postoperative period. In most cases different degree of inflammatory alterations of the gastric mucosa were detected. In 2 cases (14.3%) peptic ulcers of the anastomosis developed. Changes to the gastric stump of 11 patients were associated with the HP infection which involved the mucosa of the anastomosed intesti

To investigate the relationship between H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer in children and adolescents, the markers of H. pylori infection were studied in 22 children and adolescents who had duodenal ulcers and were followed prospectively (Group A). Another 36 patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, but without ulcer, were also studied for comparison (Group B). Antral and duodenal tissues were biopsied and analyzed for the presence of H. pylori using three standard methods: urease test, culture and histology. The specific IgG antibody against H. pylori positivity using the ELISA method we

For the eradication of the Helicobacter pylori infection, authors have tested 50 HP-positive subjects (28 females and 22 males; mean age 47 years): 21 duodenal ulcers and 29 gastritis. All patients received the following treatment: omeprazole 40 mg for 30 days, azithromycin 500 mg in a single daily dose for 3 days for 2 cycles and metronidazole 250 mgx4 for 14 days. One month after the end of therapy, patients have been controlled: the HP eradication rates have been 76% (35/46), duodenal ulcer was cured in 90% (18/20). No important side-effects were reported by patients during the treatment. I

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is currently considered the most important exogenous factor in the genesis of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. However, the optimum regimen for the eradication of H. pylori remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the eradication rate of H. pylori, the side effects, and the patients' compliance with regard to various drug regimens. We also analyzed factors influencing the eradication of H. pylori. One hundred and eighty patients were included and divided into four groups: 42 patients (Group I) received tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate (240

We modified a novel topical therapeutic method for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection to increase its effectiveness and tolerability. Sixty-six patients (with nonulcer dyspepsia, inactive ulcer, or active ulcer) were given lansoprazole (30 mg, h.s.) and pronase (18,000 tyrosine units, b.i.d.) orally for 2 days before the topical therapy. One hundred milliliters of 7% sodium bicarbonate solution containing bismuth subnitrate, amoxicillin, metronidazole (at two different regimens), and pronase was instilled into the stomach through an endoscope. BACKGROUND: Antral gastrin cell hyperfunction (AGCH), is a rare cause of duodenal ulcer associated with non-tumour hypergastrinaemia and acid hypersecretion.
AIM: To investigate the role of Helicobacter pylori in AGCH.
PATIENTS: Twelve AGCH patients and eight H. pyloripositive non-hypergastrinaemic duodenal ulcer patients were compared.
METHODS: Basal and peak acid outputs, gastrin-stimulation (meal and bombesin) tests, and immunohistochemistry for antral G and D cells were performed. One year after H. pylori eradication, six AGCH patients were again investigated with the same tests.

The study evaluates the frequency of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, as well as systemic cellular immune response to H. pylori in children with duodenal ulcer (DU). The study group comprised 47 children with DU, aged 6-17 (mean 13, 1 +/- 4, 2). H. pylori detection was based on urease test, histology, culture and serologic tests. Endoscopic and morphologic findings were analysed according to Sydney System criteria. In 12 children from the overmentioned group subsets of blood lymphocytes B and T (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD3/DR, CD19) and NK cells, some neutrophils functions (phagocytosis, chem

OBJECTIVE: We performed brushing cytology during routine gastroendoscopic examinations to evaluate the utility of gastric brushing cytology in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection.
STUDY DESIGN: The brushing cytology materials were obtained from the antrum of the stomach in 107 patients. The urea breath test, biopsy urease test and histology with hematoxylineosin staining were also performed on each patient. We then compared the results of brushing cytology with those of the three other tests (13C urea breath test, biopsy urease test, histology).
RESULTS: Fifty-nine of 103 patients
