HIV heterosexual transmission in hemophilia couples: lack of relation to T4 number, clinical diagnosis, or duration of HIV exposure.

Six (13%) of 45 female partners of 45 HIV antibody positive [Ab(+)] hemophiliacs in Western Pennsylvania have become HIV Ab(+), a mean of 10.4 months from the time of first exposure. By comparison, the mean time from first exposure to the last/recent exposure in the HIV Ab(-) female partners was 54.2 months. All six hemophiliacs who transmitted HIV to their female partners were asymptomatic, with mean T4 of 403 +/- 51/mm3 at the time of estimated seroconversion in the female; currently, their mean T4 is 203 +/- 75/mm3, which is not different from that in hemophiliac men whose partner remains H

Humoral immune responses in healthy heterosexual, homosexual and vasectomized men and in homosexual men with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

In homosexual men, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is associated with sexual promiscuity and the appearance of circulating immune complexes (CICs) and antibodies to spermatozoa which crossreact with lymphoid cells. A comparative study was initiated to determine whether similar humoral responses existed in 38 heterosexual men lacking sperm antibodies, 13 heterosexuals with sperm antibodies, 42 heterosexual vasectomized men, 22 healthy homosexual men, 26 homosexuals with lymphadenopathy and 16 with AIDS or Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Sperm antibodies were detected in 12% of the vasecto

Cytogenetic observations on XX/XY chimaeras and a reassessement of the evidence for germ cell chimaerism in heterosexual twin cattle and marmosets.

Testicular preparations were obtained from 7 bulls, twins of freemartins, and 1 male marmoset, all proved XX/XY chimaeras. X and Y sex chromosomes were confidently identified in nearly all the 87 spermatogonia at mitotic metaphase and 1052 primary spermatocytes at diakinesis-metaphase examined: no cell was identified as containing two X chromosomes. The germ cell chimaerism previously reported in these species is therefore not confirmed. Cultures grown from presumptive somatic these species is therefore not confirmed. Cultures grown from presumptive somatic cells in the testes of two of the bu

Comparison of Intrauterine Insemination Success Rates Using Donor Sperm Between Heterosexual and Female Couples: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the success rates of intrauterine insemination with donated sperm between heterosexual and female couples. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study involving 519 women who underwent intrauterine insemination with donated sperm over a 5-year period. The sample included 193 women in heterosexual relationships and 326 women in female relationships. Participants were between 18 and 38 years old, undergoing their first reproductive treatment, and had no known female fertility disorders. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between the two groups in reproducti

Relationship status among lesbian and heterosexual couples 8-10 years after undergoing assisted reproductive treatment in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Infertility along with fertility treatments has been reported to have a devastating effect on the well-being of the individuals involved as well as their relationship. So far, the studies exploring the impact on the relationship have mainly focused on heterosexual couples facing infertility and undergoing treatment. There is, therefore, a lack of data on the potential role of sexual orientation, gamete origin, as well as treatment success on the risk of separation after fertility treatment. The purpose of this study was, thus, to explore whether sexual orientation, donation treatme

Immune reconstitution efficacy after combination antiretroviral therapy in male HIV-1 infected patients with homosexual and heterosexual transmission.

We aimed to explore the impact of sexual transmission modes on immune reconstitution after combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). We have retrospectively analyzed longitudinal samples from 1557 treated male patients with virological suppression (HIV-1 RNA < 50 copies/ml) for at least 2 years. Both heterosexuals (HET) and men who have sex with men (MSM) patients showed an increasing annual trend in CD4+ T cell counts after receiving cART (HET, β: 23.51 (cell/µl)/year, 95% CI: 16.70-30.31; MSM, β: 40.21 (cell/µl)/year, 95% CI: 35.82-44.61). However, the CD4+ T cell recovery rate was much lower

A disproportionate burden: Prevalence of trauma and mental health difficulties among sexual minority versus heterosexual U.S. military veterans.

This study examined sociodemographic, military, and trauma characteristics, and mental health concerns that differ by sexual orientation in a nationally representative sample of U.S. military veterans. Data were analyzed from 4069 veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience Veterans Study (NHRVS). Compared with veterans who self-reported as heterosexual (n = 3,491, 94.7%), sexual minority veterans (n = 161, 5.3%) were more likely to be younger, women, Hispanic, unmarried/partnered, have lower household income, and to have enlisted in the military, and served for 4-9 years (

Recovery among sexual minorities in the united states population: Prevalence, characteristics, quality of life and functioning compared with heterosexual majority.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals ("sexual minorities" [SMs]) are overrepresented among individuals suffering from alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. However, little is known regarding differences, particularly in functioning and well-being, between SMs and heterosexuals in recovery from AOD problems. METHOD: Cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of US adults who resolved an AOD problem (N = 2002; National Recovery Study [Kelly et al., 2017]). Univariate analyses tested for differences between SMs and heterosexuals on socio-demographic, AOD use/treatment and c

Defining ejaculatory latencies in heterosexual males using novel tools in all types of sexual encounters in multinational population sample.

Research into ejaculatory dysfunction in sexual activities other than penovaginal intercourse is limited due to the absence of well-defined tools to measure ejaculatory latencies in these sexual activities. Our pilot study using Arousal to Ejaculation Time Interval (AETI) and Erection to Ejaculation Time Interval (EETI) as tools to measure ejaculatory latencies in different types of sexual encounters in medical professionals had yielded promising results. Hence, we conducted a similar study using AETI and EETI as tools, measured using stopwatch in healthy, sexually active heterosexual male pop

Association between medical male circumcision and HIV risk compensation among heterosexual men: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medical male circumcision (MMC) reduces HIV infection among heterosexual men. There are concerns MMC might prompt higher-risk sexual behaviours because of lower self-perceived risk of HIV infection. We reviewed the published literature to examine associations between MMC and both condom use and number of sex partners among heterosexual men. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies published before Nov 15, 2020. Interventional and observational studies were included if they contained original quantitative

Interest, Personality, and Sexual Traits That Distinguish Heterosexual, Bisexual, and Homosexual Individuals: Are There Two Dimensions That Underlie Variations in Sexual Orientation?

A diverse U.S. sample comprising 1437 men and 1474 women was assessed on sexual orientation, masculinity-femininity of occupational preferences (MF-Occ), self-ascribed masculinity-femininity (Self-MF), Big Five personality traits, sex drive, and sociosexuality (positive attitudes toward uncommitted sex). Discriminant analyses explored which traits best distinguished self-identified heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual individuals within each sex. These analyses correctly classified the sexual orientation of 55% of men and 60% of women, which was substantially better than a chance rate (33%)

Correlates of exchange sex among a population-based sample of low-income women who have heterosexual sex in Baltimore.

Sex exchange is associated with HIV and other morbidities yet has received little research, surveillance, and programmatic attention in the U.S. This study identified correlates of exchange sex and among low-income women in Baltimore, Maryland. Participants were recruited into the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in 2013 using respondent driven sampling (RDS) and completed a survey and HIV testing. The analytic sample (n = 253) consisted of women aged ≥18 years who had recent (past year) heterosexual sex. Multivariable logistic regression identified correlates of recent excha

Risk Factors for Forced, Incapacitated, and Coercive Sexual Victimization Among Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Male and Female College Students.

Although college students are at high risk for sexual victimization, the majority of research has focused on heterosexual students and often does not differentiate by victimization type. Thus, little is known about prevalence rates and risk factors for sexual victimization among sexual minority college students and whether the interaction between gender and sexual orientation differs by victimization type. To address these gaps, we examine whether risk factors for three types of sexual victimization (i.e., forced, incapacitated, and coerced) differ by gender (n = 681 males; n = 732 females) an

Doing battle with "the monster:" how high-risk heterosexuals experience and successfully manage HIV stigma as a barrier to HIV testing.

BACKGROUND: Annual HIV testing is recommended for populations at-risk for HIV in the United States, including heterosexuals geographically connected to urban high-risk areas (HRA) with elevated rates of HIV prevalence and poverty, who are primarily African American/Black or Hispanic. Yet this subpopulation of "individuals residing in HRA" (IR-HRA) evidence low rates of regular HIV testing. HIV stigma is a recognized primary barrier to testing, in part due to its interaction with other stigmatized social identities. Guided by social-cognitive and intersectionality theories, this qualitative des

Geographic Distribution and Temporal Trends of HIV-1 Subtypes through Heterosexual Transmission in China: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Heterosexual transmission (HST) has become the current predominant transmission pathways of the HIV-1 epidemic in China. The aim of this study was to explore the geographic and dynamic change of HIV-1 subtypes through HST in China from published studies. Methods: Several electronic databases were searched to identify the studies, and the overall prevalence of HIV-1 subtypes was estimated by a meta-analysis method. Subgroup analysis was conducted by study region and time period. Publication bias was evaluated using Egger's test. The χ² test was used to evaluate the proportion differ

Accounts for Unprotected Sex with Partners Met Online from Heterosexual Men and Women from Large US Metropolitan Areas.

For about 30 years, soon after the onset of the AIDS epidemic, sexual-health messaging has emphasized personal responsibility for using condoms to protect from acquiring or transmitting HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Those who did not use condoms during casual sexual encounters may therefore feel compelled to offer to others aware of their behavior what sociologists have called "accounts," an impression-management strategy to avoid unfavorable judgment. We analyzed accounts-excuses and justifications-from qualitative interviews with 150 adults who had unprotected sex in the past
