Augmented histamine test in the treatment of symptomatic hiatal hernia.

The augmented histamine test was performed in 150 cases of oesophageal hiatal hernia with and without duodenal ulcers and the results have been analysed. There was no significant difference in the result compared with normals. In addition there is no correlation between the acid secretion and either symptoms or size of the hernia. The pathogenesis of heartburn is briefly discussed.

Role of the chemoreceptor trigger zone in histamine-induced emesis.

1. In unanaesthetized dogs, the emetic action of histamine was studied after its injection into the cerebral venricles through chronically implanted cannulae in order to elucidate the role of the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CT-zone), situated in the area postrema, for this emesis.2. On injection into the lateral cerebral ventricle, about 10 times larger doses of histamine (3 mg) were required regularly to produce emesis, and it occurred after a longer latency than on injection into the fourth ventricle. This is in accord with an action of histamine on the CT-zone.3. After bilateral ablation of…

Astemizole, a potent histamine H1-receptor antagonist: effect in allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, on antigen and histamine induced skin weal responses and relationship to serum levels.

The efficacy of astemizole, a new, long acting, oral histamine H1-receptor antagonist was compared to placebo for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis during the grass pollen season of 1982. Sixty-three patients with a positive skin prick test to grass pollen and current symptoms participated in an 8 week, double-blind, randomized study. Astemizole, 10 mg, was significantly better than placebo in alleviating both nose (P less than 0.05) and eye (P less than 0.01) symptoms despite significantly greater use of the reserve medication, clemastine, by the placebo group (P less than…

Changes in Histamine Receptors (H1, H2, and H3) Expression in Rat Medial Vestibular Nucleus and Flocculus after Unilateral Labyrinthectomy: Histamine Receptors in Vestibular Compensation.

Vestibular compensation is the process of behavioral recovery following peripheral vestibular lesion. In clinics, the histaminergic medicine is the most widely prescribed for the treatment of vertigo and motion sickness, however, the molecular mechanisms by which histamine modulates vestibular function remain unclear. During recovery from the lesion, the modulation of histamine receptors in the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) and the flocculus may play an important role. Here with the means of quantitative real-time PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry, we studied the expression of h…

Targeting histamine signaling: repurposing antihistamines for cancer chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Despite major advances in oncology, effective cancer treatment remains a major clinical challenge. Repurposing approved drugs offers a promising approach for developing novel therapies for various diseases, including cancer. Among key pathophysiological mediators, histamine and its receptors have emerged as important regulators of cancer cell growth, proliferation, metastasis, and drug resistance, presenting new opportunities for using antihistamines in cancer treatment. Histamine signals through four distinct types of receptors, H1R-H4R, each displaying mechanistic diversity; therefore, under…

Histamine regulation in shaping spindle refractoriness: a computational modeling study.

The spindle refractory period refers to the interval following a spindle during which another spindle does not occur. Lengthening of the spindle refractory period (SRPL) is commonly observed in EEG recordings of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs) and may contribute to cognitive impairments. Histamine (HA), a key neuromodulator of thalamic oscillations, has been implicated in spindle refractoriness. However, the pathways through which HA influences SRPL remain poorly understood. To address this issue, we extended the thalamic modeling framework to construct an HA-based thalamic neu…

Salivary Histamine Levels in Patients with Oral Lichen Planus Lesions.

Background and Objectives: An oral lichen planus (OLP) chronic lesion refers to a group of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) that still lack a proper understanding from the point of view of relevant biomarkers for diagnostics and prognosis. The aim of the study was to assess the salivary histamine levels in patients with oral lichen planus lesions. Materials and Methods: The study included a group of 76 patients with oral lichen planus. General diseases and medication taken, smoking habits, severity of pain assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS), oral hygiene status, and durat…
