Morbidity and Mortality Among Adults Experiencing Homelessness Hospitalized With COVID-19.

People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are at higher risk for chronic health conditions, but clinical characteristics and outcomes for PEH hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are not known. We analyzed population-based surveillance data of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations during 1 March to 31 May 2020. Two percent of the people hospitalized with COVID-19 for whom a housing status was recorded were homeless. Of 199 cases in the analytic sample, most were of racial/ethnic minority groups and had underlying health conditions. Clinical outcomes such as ICU admission, respirat

Mortality among Hospitalized Dengue Patients with Comorbidities in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia.

Dengue patients with comorbidities may be at higher risk of death. In this cross-sectional study, healthcare databases from Mexico (2008-2014), Brazil (2008-2015), and Colombia (2009-2017) were used to identify hospitalized dengue cases and their comorbidities. Case fatality rates (CFRs), relative risk, and odds ratios (OR) for in-hospital mortality were determined. Overall, 678,836 hospitalized dengue cases were identified: 68,194 from Mexico, 532,821 from Brazil, and 77,821 from Colombia. Of these, 35%, 5%, and 18% were severe dengue, respectively. Severe dengue and age ≥ 46 years were assoc…

Impact of Diabetes Mellitus on Mortality and Hospitalization in Patients With Mild-to-Moderate Cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the independent predictors of all-cause mortality, all hospitalizations, and cardiac hospitalizations in patients with mild-to-moderate cardiomyopathy (left ventricular ejection fractions [LVEFs] of 36% to 50%). BACKGROUND: Patients with severe cardiomyopathy have high rates of death. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) improve survival in this setting. It is not known whether the same applies to patients with mild-to-moderate cardiomyopathy. METHODS: All patients with cardiomyopathy of any etiology seen at our institution between 2011 and 2017 were

Impact of Improvement in Walking Speed on Hospitalization and Mortality in Females with Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the principal cause of death in women. Walking speed (WS) is strongly related with mortality and CVD. The rate of all-cause hospitalization or death was assessed in 290 female outpatients with CVD after participation in a cardiac rehabilitation/secondary prevention program (CR/SP) and associated with the WS maintained during a moderate 1 km treadmill-walk. Three-year mortality rates were 57%, 44%, and 29% for the slow (2.1 ± 0.4 km/h), moderate (3.1 ± 0.3 km/h), and fast (4.3 ± 0.6 km/h) walkers, respectively, with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of 0.78 (p = 0.24)

What are the main predictors of in-hospital mortality in patients with infective endocarditis: a review.

OBJECTIVES: Infective endocarditis (IE) has a high 30-day mortality. Surgery is needed in many patients. The preoperative hemodynamic status (congestive heart failure, need for urgent/emergent surgery or mechanical support, NYHA class III/IV) could have an impact on postoperative outcome. Each of these parameters is an indication for the inadequacy of the left ventricle to maintain an adequate circulation Methods. A literature search was performed using "endocarditis AND hospital mortality OR outcome AND predictor" and "International Collaboration on Endocarditis - Prospective Cohort Study" in…
