Cellular microbiology and molecular ecology of Legionella-amoeba interaction.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac involvement in juvenile systemic sclerosis (jSSc) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, yet structured protocols for its assessment remain poorly defined. To improve clinical and research practice, standardisation of paediatric outcome measures is pivotal. METHODS: As part of the broader IJOG initiative, a scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CENTRAL were searched (1994-2026) for studies assessing cardiac involvement in juvenile and adult SSc with at least one outcome measure evaluated longitudinally. [Immune evasion molecules of Toxoplasma gondii].

Toxoplasma gondii can live in the host for a long time relying on effective immune escape mechanisms and cause a chronic infection. Different antigenic molecules in the parasitophorous vacuole membrane, rhoptry and cytoplasm play an important role in evading the host's immune response. They can effectively help avoid the host immune response by inhibiting excessive inflammatory response and production of nitric oxide, affecting gene expression of some cytokines, depleting the specific immune substances, reducing the function of immune cells and so on. This paper summarizes the latest research

Nitrogen concentration in mountain pine beetle larvae reflects nitrogen status of the tree host and two fungal associates.

Individual lodgepole pines (Pinus contorta) were fertilized with urea at nitrogen (N) inputs equivalent to 0, 315, or 630 kg/ha. Four months after application of the fertilizer, inner bark tissue N concentrations were significantly higher in the trees that had received the low dose (315 kg/ha) fertilization treatment than in the control trees; trees that had received the high-dose treatment (630 kg/ha) were intermediate and not significantly different from either of the other treatments. There was a significant positive correlation between N concentration in inner bark tissue and larval mounta

Development and feeding of fall armyworm on Miscanthus x giganteus and switchgrass.

Observations of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), larvae infesting plots of Miscanthus x giganteus Greef and Deuter ex Hodkinson and Renvoize prompted laboratory-based tests of survival, development, and feeding preferences on leaf tissue from M. x giganteus and switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L. Survival from hatch to pupation was >70 and 50% for fall armyworms reared on switchgrass and M. x giganteus, respectively, although survival of the S. frugiperda rice strain was significantly greater than the corn strain on both crops. Developmental times from h

Attraction of four entomopathogenic nematodes to four white grub species.

To better understand the differences in the efficacy of entomopathogenic nematode species against white grub species, we are studying the various steps of the infection process of entomopathogenic nematodes into different white grub species using nematode species/strains with particular promise as white grub control agents. In this study we compared the attraction of the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema scarabaei (AMK001 strain), Steinernema glaseri (NC1 strain), Heterorhabditis zealandica (X1 strain), and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (GPS11 strain) to third-instars of the scarabs Popil

Human genetic determinants of dengue virus susceptibility.

Dengue virus (DENV) is an emerging mosquito-borne pathogen that produces significant morbidity worldwide resulting in an estimated 50-100 million infections annually. DENV causes a spectrum of illness ranging from inapparent infection to life-threatening hemorrhagic fever and shock. The varied DENV disease outcome is determined by complex interactions between immunopathologic, viral, and human genetic factors. This review summarizes these interactions with a focus on human genetic determinants of DENV susceptibility, including human leukocyte antigens, blood type, and single nucleotide polymor

Active invasion and/or encapsulation? A reappraisal of host-cell parasitism by Cryptosporidium.

Host-cell invasion by Cryptosporidium is a complex process that requires many different factors derived from both the parasite and the host cell. However, the exact natures of the processes have yet to be resolved. Here, research on different components of the invasion process is put in context, and the sequence of events and pathways associated with the establishment of Cryptosporidium in its unique niche is clarified. In addition, initial parasite-host contact, host-cell invasion and host-cell responses are described. The roles of parasite and host-cell-derived components in the invasion pro

Plant structural changes due to herbivory: do changes in Aceria-infested coconut fruits allow predatory mites to move under the perianth?

Being minute in size, eriophyoid mites can reach places that are small enough to be inaccessible to their predators. The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis, is a typical example; it finds partial refuge under the perianth of the coconut fruit. However, some predators can move under the perianth of the coconut fruits and attack the coconut mite. In Sri Lanka, the phytoseiid mite Neoseiulus baraki, is the most common predatory mite found in association with the coconut mite. The cross-diameter of this predatory mite is c. 3 times larger than that of the coconut mite. Nevertheless, taking this pred

The evolution of myiasis in humans and other animals in the Old and New Worlds (part I): phylogenetic analyses.

Myiasis, the infestation of live vertebrates with dipterous larvae, seems to take two distinct forms that, it has been suggested, evolved from two distinct phylogenetic roots: saprophagous and sanguinivorous. However, the convergent evolution of morphological and life-history traits seems to have had a major role in simplifying this overall assessment of the evolutionary routes by which myiasis arose. Moreover, this somewhat simplistic division is further complicated by the existence of both ectoparasitic and endoparasitic species of myiasis-causing Diptera, the evolutionary affinities of whic

The role of mite pocket-like structures on Agama caudospinosa (Agamidae) infested by Pterygosoma livingstonei sp. n. (Acari: Prostigmata: Pterygosomatidae).

Pterygosoma livingstonei sp. n. collected from the Kenyan lizard Agama caudospinosa Meek shows morphological affinities with other South African congener species parasitizing lizards of the genus Agama, especially with P. triangulare Lawrence, 1936, but it differs in having glabrous genua II and III. P. livingstonei shows affinities with the Lawrence's hispida species group in the characters of genital and peripheral setae. This new species was found concentrated in a nuchal "mite pocket-like structure", a behaviour previously unreported among species belonging to the genus Pterygosoma. Mite p

Host sharing and host manipulation by larval helminths in shore crabs: cooperation or conflict?

Larval helminths of different species that share the same intermediate host and are transmitted by predation to the same definitive host may cooperate in their attempts to manipulate the behaviour of the intermediate host, while at the same time having conflicts of interests over the use of host resources. A few studies have indicated that intermediate hosts harbouring larval helminths have altered concentrations of neurotransmitters in their nervous system, and thus measuring levels of neurotransmitters in host brains could serve to assess the respective and combined effect of different helmi

The histopathology of bancroftian filariasis revisited: the role of the adult worm in the lymphatic-vessel disease.

Although morphology is generally limited to static images, the histopathological features of bancroftian lymphatic disease are presented here in a way that is as dynamic as possible and closely associated with the clinical, ultrasonographic and surgical characteristics. The protean spectrum of alterations seen in the host's lymphatic vessels is discussed, and the changes caused by the live and dead worms are highlighted, as independent events. Evidence of a remodelling process, in which the lymphatic endothelial cells appear to have a key role, is provided for the first time. Despite many new

[Bacterial symbionts (Wolbachia) of filarial nematodes: implications for the treatment and pathology of filariasis].

Filarial nematodes harbour intracellular, Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the genus Wolbachia. These bacteria have been observed in various species of filariae, including the main filariasis agents of humans and animals. It has been suggested that Wolbachia could play an important role in the biology of filarial nematodes and could be implicated in the pathogenesis of filarial diseases. Wolbachia could thus represent a target for the control of filariasis and key to the understanding of these diseases. Indeed, in various species of filariae, tetracycline treatments have been shown both to

[Epidemiology, pathogenicity and diagnosis of echinococcosis].

Echinococcosis is an infectious disease caused by the larval form of the genus Echinococcus. Two of the parasite species may cause severe disease in humans: Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis. The liver is the most frequently involved organ in patients with echinococcosis. Diagnosis is achieved by variety of clinical methods, such as computerized tomography, ultrasound examination, magnetic resonance imaging and immunodiagnosis based on the detection of patient's serum antibodies.

Where have all the fleas gone? Low levels of Blue Tit Parus caeruleus nests infestation.

Prevalence of flea infestation in nests of Blue Tit Parus caeruleus was analyzed and compared with these of other hole-nesting birds. Nests were collected from nestboxes prior to youngs fledging. It was found that prevalence of fleas was very low in comparison to other studies of Blue Tits nests and to other bird species. The possible reasons of this low prevalence are discussed.

Host immunity to ticks.

The tick-host-pathogen interface is characterized by complex immunological interactions. Tick feeding induces host immune regulatory and effector pathways involving antibodies, complement, antigen-presenting cells, T lymphocytes, and other bioactive molecules. Acquired resistance impairs tick engorgement, ova production, and viability. Tick countermeasures to host defenses reduce T-lymphocyte proliferation, elaboration of the TH1 cytokines interleukin-2 and interferon-gamma, production of macrophage cytokines interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor, and antibody responses. The dynamic balance

[Physiopathology of protozoan infections].

The pathophysiology of diseases produced by protozoal infections is caused not only by a direct effect of the parasites on their host (e.g. host cell lysis or parasite adherence), but also by indirect effects, where molecules of parasite origin exert an effect on host cells, which in turn produces a cascade of events (including the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins and nitric oxide) responsible for the symptomatology observed. The role of the host itself in the pathogenic events is not negligeable and its genetic background, nutritional and immunological status will influence
