Al Promotion of In2O3 for CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

In2O3 is a promising catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, relevant to renewable energy storage in chemicals. Herein, we investigated the promoting role of Al on In2O3 using flame spray pyrolysis to prepare a series of In2O3-Al2O3 samples in a single step (0-20 mol % Al). Al promoted the methanol yield, with an optimum being observed at an Al content of 5 mol %. Extensive characterization showed that Al can dope into the In2O3 lattice (maximum ∼ 1.2 mol %), leading to the formation of more oxygen vacancies involved in CO2 adsorption and methanol formation. The rest of Al is presen…

The Impact of Drugs on Hydrogen Sulfide Homeostasis in Mammals.

Mammalian cells and tissues have the capacity to generate hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) via catabolic routes involving cysteine metabolism. H2S acts on cell signaling cascades that are necessary in many biochemical and physiological roles important in the heart, brain, liver, kidney, urogenital tract, and cardiovascular and immune systems of mammals. Diminished levels of this molecule are observed in several pathophysiological conditions including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and immune function. Interestingly, in the last two decades, it has become apparent that some commonly prescribed pha…

Role of hydrogen sulphide in physiological and pathological angiogenesis.

The role of hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) in angiogenesis has been widely demonstrated. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in H2 S-induced angiogenesis. H2 S promotes angiogenesis by upregulating VEGF via pro-angiogenic signal transduction. The involved signalling pathways include the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway, phosphoinositide-3 kinase pathway, nitric oxide (NO) synthase/NO pathway, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) pathway, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-sensitive potassium (KATP ) channels. H2 S has been shown to contribute…

[Role and mechanism of hydrogen sulfide in vascular calcification].

Vascular calcification is a common pathological process in patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease, manifested by the deposition of hydroxyapatite on the walls of blood vessels. Hydrogen sulfide is the third gas signal molecule found in mammals after nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant stress and other effects in the cardiovascular system. In recent years, it has been recognized that hydrogen sulfide has an anti-vascular calcification effect, and supplementation with hydrogen sulfide and its donors can alleviate vascular…

Effects of hydrogen as adjuvant treatment for unstable angina.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are closely related to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. It is established that hydrogen has significant protective effects on many diseases as a potential antioxidative and anti-inflammatory agent. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on unstable angina in vitro and in vivo. An atherosclerosis model in vitro was constructed by ox-LDL-induced injury of human umbilical vein endothelial cells and in vitro testing indicated hydrogen inhibited ox-LDL-induced oxidative stress and inflammatory response by down-regulating LOX-1/NF-kB …

Electrochemical Tandem Olefination and Hydrogenation Reaction with Ammonia.

An electrochemical Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons/hydrogenation tandem reaction was achieved using ammonia as electron and proton donors. The reaction could give two-carbon-elongated ester and nitrile from aldehyde or ketones directly. This reaction could proceed with a catalytic amount of base or even without a base. The ammonia provides both the electron and proton for this tandem reaction and enables the catalyst-free hydrogenation of an α,β-unsaturated HWE intermediate. More than 40 examples were reported, and functional groups, including heterocycles and hydroxyl, were tolerated.

The Cardiovascular Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide: The Epigenetic Mechanisms.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), known as a gas signal molecule, plays an important role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) through mechanisms such as angiogenesis, vasodilation, and anti-vascular endothelial cell senescence. Current studies have shown that H2S can regulate cardiac function through epigenetic regulation. The regulation has opened up a new avenue for the study of CVD development mechanism and H2S related drug discoveries.

Impact of Hydrogen Sulfide on Mitochondrial and Bacterial Bioenergetics.

This review focuses on the effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on the unique bioenergetic molecular machines in mitochondria and bacteria-the protein complexes of electron transport chains and associated enzymes. H2S, along with nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, belongs to the class of endogenous gaseous signaling molecules. This compound plays critical roles in physiology and pathophysiology. Enzymes implicated in H2S metabolism and physiological actions are promising targets for novel pharmaceutical agents. The biological effects of H2S are biphasic, changing from cytoprotection to cytotoxicit…

Hydrogen sulfide as a potent scavenger of toxicant acrolein.

Acrolein (ACR) is a metabolic byproduct in vivo and a ubiquitous environmental toxicant. It is implicated in the initiation and development of many diseases through multiple mechanisms, including the induction of oxidative stress. Currently, our understanding of the body defense mechanism against ACR toxicity is still limited. Given that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has strong antioxidative actions and it shares several properties of ACR scavenger glutathione (GSH), we, therefore, tested whether H2S could be involved in ACR detoxification. Taking advantage of two cell lines that produced different l…

Spatiotemporal regulation of hydrogen sulfide signaling in the kidney.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has long been recognized as a putrid, toxic gas. However, as a result of intensive biochemical research in the past two decades, H2S is now considered to be the third gasotransmitter alongside nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) in mammalian systems. H2S-producing enzymes are expressed in all organs, playing an important role in their physiology. In the kidney, H2S is a critical regulator of vascular and cellular function, although the mechanisms that affect (sub)cellular levels of H2S are not precisely understood. H2S modulates systemic and renal blood flow, glom…

Pharmacokinetics of a single inhalation of hydrogen gas in pigs.

The benefits of inhaling hydrogen gas (H2) have been widely reported but its pharmacokinetics have not yet been sufficiently analyzed. We developed a new experimental system in pigs to closely evaluate the process by which H2 is absorbed in the lungs, enters the bloodstream, and is distributed, metabolized, and excreted. We inserted and secured catheters into the carotid artery (CA), portal vein (PV), and supra-hepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) to allow repeated blood sampling and performed bilateral thoracotomy to collapse the lungs. Then, using a hydrogen-absorbing alloy canister, we filled t…

Clean production and utilisation of hydrogen in molten salts.

Green and low cost production of strategic materials such as steel and graphene at large scale is a critical step towards sustainable industrial developments. Hydrogen is a green fuel for the future, and a key element for the clean production of steel. However, the sustainable and economic production of hydrogen is a barrier towards its large scale utilisation in iron and steelmaking, and other possible applications. As a key challenge, the water electrolysis, which is commonly used for the carbon-free production of hydrogen, is uneconomic and involves various problems including the corrosion …

Hydrogen Sulfide Metabolism and Signaling in the Tumor Microenvironment.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), while historically perceived merely as a toxicant, has progressively emerged as a key regulator of numerous processes in mammalian physiology, exerting its signaling function essentially through interaction with and/or modification of proteins, targeting mainly cysteine residues and metal centers. As a gaseous signaling molecule that freely diffuses across aqueous and hydrophobic biological milieu, it has been designated the third 'gasotransmitter' in mammalian physiology. H2S is synthesized and detoxified by specialized endogenous enzymes that operate under a tight reg…

Hydrogen sulfide: An endogenous regulator of the immune system.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is now recognized as an endogenous signaling gasotransmitter in mammals. It is produced by mammalian cells and tissues by various enzymes - predominantly cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST) - but part of the H2S is produced by the intestinal microbiota (colonic H2S-producing bacteria). Here we summarize the available information on the production and functional role of H2S in the various cell types typically associated with innate immunity (neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer c…

Effect of Hydrogen Sulfide on Deformability of Rat Erythrocytes.

The influence of a hydrogen sulfide donor NaHS (2×10-5-10-3 M) on the rat erythrocyte deformability was analyzed by laser diffractometry. NaHS (6×10-5 M) increased, while NaHS (10-3 M) reduced erythrocyte deformability. The effect of NaHS (6×10-5 M) was similar to that of NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP, 10-7 M). However, simultaneous use of NaHS (6×10-5 M) and SNP induced less pronounced changes in erythrocyte deformability than their individual application. It is likely H2S, similar to NO, is involved in the regulation of erythrocyte deformability in the microvascular bed.

Hydrogen sulfide biosynthesis is impaired in the osteoarthritic joint.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and it is a leading cause of disability in the elderly. Its complete etiology is not known although there are several metabolic, genetic, epigenetic, and local contributing factors involved. At the moment, there is no cure for this pathology and treatment alternatives to retard or stop its progression are intensively being sought. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a small gaseous molecule and is present in sulfurous mineral waters as its active component. Data from recent clinical trials shows that balneotherapy (immersion in mineral and/or ther…

Involvement of hydrogen sulfide in the progression of renal fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE: Renal fibrosis is the most common manifestation of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Noting that existing treatments of renal fibrosis only slow disease progression but do not cure it, there is an urgent need to identify novel therapies. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a newly discovered endogenous small gas signaling molecule exerting a wide range of biologic actions in our body. This review illustrates recent experimental findings on the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of H2S against renal fibrosis and highlights its potential in future clinical application. Diacyl disulfides as the precursors for hydrogen persulfide (H2S2).

While hydrogen polysulfides (H2Sn, n ≥ 2) are believed to play regulatory roles in biology, their fundamental chemistry and reactivity are still poorly understood. Compounds that can produce H2Sn are useful tools. In this work we found that H2S2 could be effectively produced from diacyl disulfide precursors, triggered by certain nucleophiles, in both aqueous solutions and organic solvents. This method was used to explore redox reactions of H2S2, such as scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and reduction of tetrazines.

Hydrogen sulfide in physiology and pathogenesis of bacteria and viruses.

An increasing number of studies have established hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) gas as a major cytoprotectant and redox modulator. Following its discovery, H2 S has been found to have pleiotropic effects on physiology and human health. H2 S acts as a gasotransmitter and exerts its influence on gastrointestinal, neuronal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and hepatic systems. Recent discoveries have clearly indicated the importance of H2 S in regulating vasorelaxation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, ageing, and metabolism. Contrary to studies in higher organisms, the role of H2 S in the pathophysiology of…
