Hepatitis A vaccination of Argentinean infants: comparison of two vaccination schedules.

BACKGROUND: Early immunization to protect infants against hepatitis A (HA) is recommended in intermediate or high endemic areas of the world, but little is known of the effects of maternal antibodies on the immune response. We studied the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of an inactivated HA vaccine administered in two different schedules to 2-month-old infants in an intermediate/high endemic area in Argentina. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized study 131 infants received either three doses (at 2, 4, 6 months of age [Group A]) or one dose (at 6 months of age [Group B]) of the pediatri

Association Between Third-Trimester Tdap Immunization and Neonatal Pertussis Antibody Concentration.

IMPORTANCE: Immunization with tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is recommended in the United States during weeks 27 through 36 of pregnancy to prevent life-threatening infant pertussis. The optimal gestation for immunization to maximize concentrations of neonatal pertussis toxin antibodies is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine pertussis toxin antibody concentrations in cord blood from neonates born to women immunized and unimmunized with Tdap vaccine in pregnancy and optimal gestational age for immunization to maximize concentrations of neonatal antibodies. DESIGN, SE

Unimmunized Gypsy populations and implications for the eradication of poliomyelitis in Europe.

The certification of poliomyelitis eradication in Europe will eventually require that countries demonstrate there is a minimal risk of wild poliovirus reintroduction and sustained transmission through unimmunized subpopulations such as ethnic minorities. A serologic survey among a Gypsy community in Italy found that despite only 26% documented immunization coverage, serum neutralizing antibodies to poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 were detected in 81%, 94%, and 63% of the 86 persons studied. While the high level of immunity found in this community may have been due to secondary spread of vaccine v

[Efficiency of paternal lymphocyte immunization in prevention of unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion. I. Clinical prognostic factors].

Prognostic value of some clinical factors on the course of subsequent pregnancy in 117 women with unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion undergoing immunization with paternal lymphocytes were evaluated in the study. The results allow to conclude that high efficiency of alloimmunization in preventing consecutive abortions (87.2% in our own study) does not seem to depend significantly on: the woman's and her partner's age, number, type (primary vs. secondary), and time of previous miscarriages, coexistence of subfertility, time from immunization to the fertilization and the number of lymphoc

Effect of GnRH immunocastration on immune function in male rats.

The present study aimed to reveal the effects of immunocastration on the development of the immune system in rats. Seventy rats were randomly assigned into two groups: Control (n = 35) and immunized (n = 35). Twenty-day-old rats were immunized with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and booster immunization was administered every two weeks (three immunizations in total). From 20-day-old rats, we collected samples every two weeks, including five immunized rats and five control rats (seven collections in total). We collected blood samples, testicles, thymuses, and spleens. The results showed

Safety and immunogenicity of single dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine among non/partially immune children against diphtheria and/or tetanus, Hyderabad, India, 2007.

In Hyderabad, India, diphtheria is common among children aged 5-19 years. On account of low coverage of diphtheria vaccine boosters recommended under the universal immunization programme, a large proportion of children were susceptible/partially immune against diphtheria and/or tetanus. We evaluated immunogenicity and safety of single dose of indigenously developed tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine (diphtheria-toxoid < or =5 Lf) among 483 school children from Hyderabad aged 7-17 years and susceptible/partially immune against diphtheria and/or tetanus. Serological testing 6 weeks after vaccinatio

[Vaccination coverage in young children and school children in the Bern canton].

In 1995 immunization coverage at 24 months of age and after the first school year was estimated according to the method recommended by the WHO. Vaccination booklets of 840 children born in 1986, 1987, 1988 or 1991 in the Canton of Berne were reviewed. The response rate was high (96%). The immunization coverage at 24 months of age were for measles 74%, for mumps and rubella (MMR) 72% higher than for diphteria (D), tetanus (T) (62%) and poliomyelitis (polio) (60%) (4 doses) (p < 0.0001). Of the Swiss children born in 1991 32% were vaccinated against tuberculosis. Children 24 months of age of all

Two independent outbreaks of measles in partially vaccinated junior high schools in Tottori, Japan.

We analyzed retrospectively a relative risk of measles attacks in vaccinated vs. unvaccinated students using two independent outbreaks in Japan. The first involved 33/328 (10%) students where 64% students and 30% measles cases had been vaccinated. The second involved 27/241 (11%) students where 81% students and 48% measles cases had been vaccinated. The attack rates of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated students were significantly low (p < 0.001), but they accounted 25% in both episodes. The statistically significant clinical features among vaccinated and unvaccinated cases included the average durat

Measles Resurgence: Could a Third Vaccine Dose Be the Solution?

Measles remains a highly infectious viral disease and continues to pose a major global public health concern, with recurrent outbreaks occurring despite the implementation of effective vaccination strategies. This review examines multifactorial drivers of current measles outbreaks, summarises current recommendations for the standard two-dose measles-containing vaccine schedule, and evaluates emerging immunological evidence regarding the administration of a third dose. Some studies indicate that a third measles-containing vaccine dose can result in an enhanced response for both humoral and cell

Comparison of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-13) cellular immune responses after primary and booster doses of vaccine.

Since their widespread use, pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have proven effective at reducing both invasive and noninvasive pneumococcal diseases and nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn). To establish this level of protection, a three-dose schedule with a single booster (3 + 1) was the immunization regime in the USA. Alternatively, WHO-approved schedules of 3 + 0 and 2 + 1 are now becoming adopted in many countries to reduce the cost of vaccination. Sustained protection from pneumococcal disease and carriage requires persisting levels of antibody and cellular immune

Intradermal rabies pre-exposure vaccination schedules in older travellers: comparison of immunogenicity post-primary course and post-booster.

BACKGROUND: Intradermal (ID) rabies vaccination for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has become increasingly popular; however, there is limited evidence about the effectiveness of different ID PrEP schedules in travellers aged > 50 years or their response to ID boosters. This study aimed to compare across different ID vaccine schedules and age groups the proportion of travellers who were seropositive after (i) primary course of ID PrEP and (ii) a booster. METHODS: Travellers who received ID PrEP at a travel medicine clinic in South Australia from 2000 to 2016 were included. Three schedules wer

Importance of antirabies revaccination for an adequate antirabies protection in bovine newborns.

The transfer of antirabies immunoglobulins in cows that were prime vaccinated and cows that were revaccinated against rabies correlated to the serum titers in their offspring was evaluated. The results demonstrated that revaccination against rabies during pregnancy induces neutralizing antibody titers at a protective level that are transferred directly to calves through colostrum and reinforce the importance of revaccination for improved colostral antibody transfer and offspring protection against rabies.

[Vaccination and multiple sclerosis].

Vaccinations to prevent communicable diseases are, like in other chronic diseases, of special importance in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Various bacterial and viral infections have been shown to induce relapses of MS. Reports of possible adverse effects of vaccinations on the course of multiple sclerosis have led patients and treating physicians to exercise caution in the use of vaccines. A number of vaccines have been studied with respect to the risk in MS patients. Some vaccines, for example against yellow fever, are not indicated in MS due to the risk of MS exacerbation. In contra

Cattle immune response to botulinum type D toxoid: results of a vaccination study.

Cattle botulism is a food-borne intoxication caused by the ingestion of preformed botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) of serotypes B, C, or D. Protection in cattle against botulinum intoxication is based on the presence of specific serum neutralizing antibodies upon exposure. Outbreaks in vaccinated cattle have raised concerns about vaccine quality and efficacy. To this end, three different immunization protocols and the effect of maternal anti-BoNT/D antibodies, at the priming dose, were analyzed in 2-month-old dairy calves. Based on previously determined protective anti-BoNT/D antibody levels analy

Diphtheria boosters for adults: balancing risks.

Combined tetanus-diphtheria vaccines are now the only means of protecting adults from tetanus or diphtheria. When advising on the benefits and risk of vaccinating for one disease, clinicians now have to consider the other vaccine component, and questions have arisen about where the balance of risk lies for different patients. Five doses of diphtheria-toxoid containing vaccine are probably sufficient protection for individuals who remain in low-incidence countries such as those in most of Western Europe. Adults who remain in the UK are extremely unlikely to be exposed to diphtheria and this nee

Are tick-borne encephalitis vaccines interchangeable?

Two tick-borne encephalitis vaccines produced by two vaccine manufacturers are available in most European countries. A question that is frequently asked regarding these two vaccines concerns their exchangeability, however, to date, no detailed assessment has been published. This review analyzes clinical studies investigating these two vaccines and describes possible approaches to boost or continue uncompleted primary immunization schedules, with either of the two tick-borne encephalitis vaccines.
