Mucormycosis, also called "Black Fungus", is a new cause for worry in the current Coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) pandemic. Mucormycosis is devasting due to its high rate of morbidity and mortality which is a great cause of concern. Mucormycosis, in general, affects immunocompromised patients including diabetic, people with malignancies, organ and stem cell transplants and people affected with pandemic diseases like covid-19. Diagnosis of Mucormycosis is often delayed either due to clinical complications or misdiagnosed as symptoms of other diseases, especially covid-19. This could delay t

COVID-19 which first raised its deadly head in December 2019, has now engulfed the entire planet with its fire and fury. Mankind has been literally held to ransom by this micro-beast which has caused so much pain, sorrow and suffering, leaving behind scores of people dead and millions sick and gasping for air (quite literally!) The whole world is in disarray since the past 16 months, and now a new deadly superadded fungal infection has appeared in COVID-19 patients, in parts of the Indian subcontinent; namely mucormycosis, the deadly "black fungus." This persistent, unrelenting fungal infectio

Viral pneumonia is usually community acquired and caused by influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneumovirus, and adenovirus. Many of these infections are airway centric and chest imaging demonstrates bronchiolitis and bronchopneumonia, With the exception of adenovirus infections, the presence of lobar consolidation usually suggests bacterial coinfection. Community-acquired viral pathogens can cause more severe pneumonia in immunocompromised hosts, who are also susceptible to CMV and varicella infection. These latter 2 pathogens are less likely to manifest the strik…

Deep cutaneous fungal infections including deep dermatophytosis are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, especially in immunocompromised patients. Variable and longer turnaround time on tissue culture results delay diagnosis. We sought to seek the fast bedside diagnosis for disseminated deep dermatophytosis by direct microscopy using a blunt scalpel or needle aspiration before biopsy. This is a 6-year retrospective review of patients with a diagnosis of disseminated deep dermatophytosis seen at a single tertiary care institution. Trichophyton rubrum was isolated in four patient

Nocardia is a Gram-positive weakly acid-fast bacterium that is ubiquitous in the environment. It represents a rare cause of infection in humans and typically causes pulmonary, cutaneous, or central nervous system (CNS) infections. CNS nocardiosis has very poor prognosis, especially in immunocompromised hosts. Nocardia terpenica is a species of Nocardia consisting of two strains that were reclassified from Nocardia brasiliensis in 2007. We report the second case of CNS Nocardia terpenica infection, and the first case of cerebral abscess from Nocardia terpenica. This report raises the index of s…

The significance of opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients and the enigmatic pathogenicity of Blastocystis directed us to conduct the first global systematic review and meta-analysis on Blastocystis prevalence, odds ratios (ORs), and subtypes distribution in various immunocompromised patients (HIV/AIDS, cancer and hemodialysis patients, as well as transplant recipients). The systematic searching procedure was done in Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for relevant published literature until November 11, 2020. Random-effects model was utilized to calcul

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis are infections caused by molds of the order Mucorales. These opportunistic infections are rare, difficult to diagnose, and have a poor prognosis. We aimed to describe common radiographic patterns that may help to diagnose cerebral mucormycosis and search for histopathological correlations with imaging data.
METHODS: We studied the radiological findings (CT and MRI) of 18 patients with cerebral mucormycosis and four patients' histopathological findings.
RESULTS: All patients were immunocompromised and/or diabetic. The type of lesions depended on the infection's diss

OBJECTIVES: Mucormycosis is a rare angioinvasive infection caused by filamentous fungi with a high lethality among the immunocompromised. In healthy people, the innate immune system is sufficient to prevent infection. The exception to this is deep tissue exposure seen during trauma. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the epidemiology of mucormycosis using a statewide population-based data set.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of all hospital admissions for mucormycosis within the state of Florida from 1997 through the beginning of 2020. A distribution map was created to eva

BACKGROUND: Clinical imaging in suspected invasive fungal disease (IFD) has a significant role in early detection of disease and helps direct further testing and treatment. Revised definitions of IFD from the EORTC/MSGERC were recently published and provide clarity on the role of imaging for the definition of IFD. Here, we provide evidence to support these revised diagnostic guidelines.
METHODS: We reviewed data on imaging modalities and techniques used to characterize IFDs.
RESULTS: Volumetric high-resolution computed tomography (CT) is the method of choice for lung imaging. Although no CT

Disseminated nocardiosis is a rare but growing concern in immunocompromised patients. Typical localizations include the lung, brain and/or soft tissues, but laboratory confirmation of nocardiosis usually requires sampling of infected organs by invasive procedures such as bronchoalveolar lavage or brain biopsy. We report a case of disseminated nocardiosis occurring in a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant recipient, with clinical lung and brain localizations. Examination of the thyroid gland was suggestive of a unilateral abscess. A culture of thyroid pus sampled by fine-needle aspiration was po

PURPOSE: Nocardia farcinica is an opportunistic pathogen causing mainly pneumonia in immunocompromised patients, complicated in almost one-third of the cases by a thick-walled multiloculated cerebral abscess which induces significant morbidity and mortality. This review aims to assess the optimal treatment strategy for N. farcinica cerebral abscess.
METHODS: Report of a case. Medline database was used to conduct a systematic review from inception to January 2020 looking for English-language articles focused on N. farcinica cerebral abscess, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines.

The number of patients suffering from immunodeficiency is increasing; however, the vaccination rate of these patients is below average. Administration of inactivated vaccines is harmless but does not reliably trigger a persistent immune response. Live vaccines provide a reliable protection but can cause severe disease in immunocompromised patients. Live vaccines can be administered under defined levels of immunosuppression, e.g. against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (MMRV). In addition, the immunization of the domestic environment plays an important role in preventing infectious diseas

PURPOSE: Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic and aggressive deep fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised patients, and its mortality rate has been reported as up to 80%. Typing of the infection is based mainly on clinical and anatomic presentations, with the most common being the rhinocerebral type.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This report presents 3 patients with cancer who had successful treatment of mandibular mucormycosis. Chemotherapy was administered 13 to 30 days before diagnosis of the infection, resulting in neutropenia in all patients. Each case is thoroughly presen

Blastomycosis is a subacute or chronic deep mycosis caused by a dimorphic fungus, Blastomyces dermatitidis, that generally produces a pulmonary form of the disease and, to a lesser extent, extrapulmonary forms, such as cutaneous, osteoarticular, and genitourinary. Both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals can be infected, but more severe disease occurs in the immunocompromised. Blastomycosis can be diagnosed by culture, direct visualization of the yeast in affected tissue, antigen testing, or a combination of these methods. Treatment course and duration depend on the severity of i
