BACKGROUND: Minimal research has examined neurochemical alterations underlying the relationship between impulsivity and alcohol use in youth. We examined associations between multimethod impulsivity measures and neurometabolite levels in youth who use alcohol compared to controls.
METHODS: Using baseline data from two clinical trials with youth (age 16-22) who used alcohol (N = 82, 65 % female) and healthy controls (N = 22, 50 % female), we measured levels of glutamate-related metabolites (glutamate [Glu] and glutamate + glutamine [Glx]) and GABA, and other exploratory neurometabolites (gluta

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the extent to which father-daughter relationships predicted risk-taking in a sample of female college students. Specifically, this study examined whether female adolescents' models of father psychological presence predicted substance use and sexual risk-taking, over and above impulsivity, depression, and other risky behaviors.
METHODS: A sample of 203 female college students were administered several scales assessing father psychological presence, sexual risk-taking, substance use, impulsivity, and depression.
RESULTS: Father psychological presence d

BACKGROUND: Head injury (HI) is a serious public health concern related to a wide range of medical and neurobehavioral consequences, including the worsening of adolescent psychopathology and unhealthy substance use. Little is known, however, about whether causes of HI are uniquely related to between-individual differences in impulsivity and binge drinking during emerging adulthood - a life-course period characterized by risk taking behavior and substance use experimentation.
METHODS: Data from an ethnically diverse longitudinal sample of Texas youth (N = 741) are analyzed to evaluate the asso

Impulse control deficits are often found to co-occur with substance use disorders (SUDs). On the one hand, it is well known that chronic intake of drugs of abuse remodels the brain with significant consequences for a range of cognitive behaviors. On the other hand, individual variation in impulse control may contribute to differences in susceptibility to SUDs. Both of these relationships have been described, thus leading to a "chicken or the egg" debate which remains to be fully resolved. Does impulsivity precede drug use or does it manifest as a function of problematic drug usage? The link be

Response inhibition in schizophrenia remains controversial, with behavioral correlates largely unknown. Inpatients with schizophrenia and controls completed a stop task and an impulsiveness questionnaire. Slower inhibitory processes were evident in schizophrenia, but there was no association with impulsivity. The nature of inhibition and impulsivity in schizophrenia is complex, and could reflect schizophrenia subgroups or disease states.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal repetitive behaviors have been reported in Parkinson's disease (PD) during dopamine replacement therapy (DRT) and associated with individual predisposing features, including impulsivity. However, impulsivity and compulsive symptoms have never been explored in PD patients before initiation of DRT. We previously reported a 20% of impulse control disorders (ICD) in an Italian cohort.
METHODS: 103 consecutive newly diagnosed drug-naïve PD patients (means: age = 60.5 ± 9.2 years; duration = 15.4 ± 15.3 months) were screened for compulsive sexual behavior, compulsive buying, in

Impaired self-control has been linked to deficits in performance monitoring and is associated with impulsive and compulsive behaviors. Although altered error-related negativity (ERN) amplitudes have been observed in disorders characterized by these traits, it remains unclear how such alterations relate to the translation of monitoring signals into behavior. In a sample of 221 participants, we combined electroencephalography with ecological momentary assessment to examine how self-reported impulsivity and compulsivity relate to daily self-control and moderate the association between ERN amplitu

Pathological gambling (PG) is a non-substance based addiction that shares many behavioral and neural features with substance based addictions. However, in PG behavioral and neural changes are unlikely to be confounded by effects of acute or chronic drug exposure. Changes in reward based decision-making in particular increases in impulsivity are hallmark features of addictions. Here we review studies in PG that applied three reward-related decision tasks: the Iowa Gambling Task, probability discounting and delay discounting. We discuss the findings and focus on the impact of addiction severity

Substance abuse experimentation may be one of several types of problem behaviors. Data from 99 Caucasian women interviewed in alcoholism tre … perimentation, early drug and alcohol users were significantly more likely to have engaged in other impulsive behaviors (e.g., running away from home, trouble with school authorities) than were nonusers or users of alcohol only. Alcoholism prevention programs, therefore, would do well to target youth who exhibit acting-out behaviors as a high-risk group for early al …

Knowing the extent to which mental well-being and stressful life events during adolescence contribute to personality characteristics related to risk-taking behaviors, such as emotion-driven impulsiveness, is highly relevant for the development of health promotion measures. This study examined whether psychosocial well-being and different stressful life events are associated with emotion-driven impulsiveness. In total, 3,031 adolescents (52% girls; Mage = 13.6 years) were included from the I. Family Study, a cross-sectional examination on lifestyle-related behaviors conducted across eight Europ

This study aims to investigate the roles of decision-making processes and genetics in the co-occurrence of alcohol use and suicidal thoughts/behaviors (STB) in adolescence. We used data from the ABCD® study (abcdstudy.org) and included behavioral (computerized tasks, self-report questionnaires) and genetic (polygenic scores [PGS]) measures related to cognitive (executive functions) and affective (delay-discounting, risk-taking, impulsivity) processes involved in decision-making. First, we evaluated the latent structure of decision-making in the full sample (N = 11,868) using a split-half explo

BACKGROUND: Substance-related and behavioral addictions frequently co-occur and are increasingly conceptualized as part of an interconnected psychopathological framework. Addictive behaviors are linked to internalizing symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and stress, through shared vulnerability. Although impulsivity, anhedonia, and stress-related processes have been proposed as transdiagnostic factors, their relative roles as central or bridging mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify the network structure of multiple addictions by jointly modeling substance-related and beh

To investigate how time perception may contribute to the symptoms of self-harming Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients, 19 self-harming BPD inpatients and 39 normal controls were given measures of time perception, impulsivity, personality, emotion, and BPD characteristics. A test sensitive to orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) function ("Frontal" Behavior Questionnaire) was also administered, as the OFC has been associated with impulsivity and time perception. BPD patients produced less time than controls, and this correlated with impulsiveness and other characteristics commonly associated w

If Cleckley1,2 and Robins3 were alive today, it is conceivable that they may argue about whether conduct disorder (CD) should be measured primarily with personality traits or behavioral characteristics. However, these strict demarcations may not be needed, or most helpful, for understanding youth with conduct problems. Recently, I proposed that CD might be best specified with 3 personality dimensions including grandiose-manipulative (GM), callous-unemotional (CU), and daring-impulsive (DI) traits.4 These traits are observable from an early age, appear to have a genetic basis, and have distinct

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gambling disorder has been associated with illegal behaviors; however, research using validated scales and in-person assessments has been less common.
METHODS: Four hundred and twenty-seven people with gambling disorders taking part in clinical trials completed multiple instruments and select cognitive tasks. Two groups were identified: those with illegal behaviors linked to gambling disorder and those without. Differences between the groups were examined.
RESULTS: 43.3% of people with gambling disorders reported gambling-related illegal behaviors. Illegal behavior
