COVID-19 Vaccination and Gaps in India.

INTRODUCTION: The important variables that influence how many people are vaccinated against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in India include vaccine skepticism, socioeconomic status, and multi-dimensional deprivation. Our preliminary research suggests that uncertainty about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine has a large and detrimental effect on immunization rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Crucial Subsets Survey (CSS) is performed daily on Facebook to recruit participants for cross-section surveys by academic institutions, the Delphi Research Center, and the University of Maryland's Joint Pr…

Modelling the control of bovine brucellosis in India.

Brucellosis imposes substantial impacts on livestock production and public health worldwide. A stochastic, age-structured model incorporating herd demographics was developed describing within- and between-herd transmission of Brucella abortus in dairy cattle herds. The model was fitted to data from a cross-sectional study conducted in Punjab State of India and used to evaluate the effectiveness of control strategies under consideration. Based on model results, stakeholder acceptance and constraints regarding vaccine supply, vaccination of replacement calves in large farms should be prioritized…

Monkeypox scenario in India: a review study.

The monkeypox virus, which causes the viral zoonotic disease, is known as the most significant orthopoxvirus infection following the elimination of smallpox. The monkeypox virus, which was previously exclusive to West and Central African nations and caused endemic diseases in monkeys and people, has recently been linked to human infections in non-endemic areas including the United States of America (USA) and more than 30 additional countries. Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of monkeypox have also recently been made available by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India and …

Evolutionary dynamics of dengue virus in India.

More than a hundred thousand dengue cases are diagnosed in India annually, and about half of the country's population carries dengue virus-specific antibodies. Dengue propagates and adapts to the selection pressures imposed by a multitude of factors that can lead to the emergence of new variants. Yet, there has been no systematic analysis of the evolution of the dengue virus in the country. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of all DENV gene sequences collected between 1956 and 2018 from India. We examine the spatio-temporal dynamics of India-specific genotypes, their evolutionary relat…

CARASIL - A Review of Patients from India.

Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a well-known cause of vascular dementia. Though a majority of these cases are sporadic, familial monogenic causes are being frequently identified as well. Cerebral autosomal recessive arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CARASIL) is a rare autosomal recessive CSVD, caused by mutation in HTRA 1 gene on chromosome 10q (10q25.3-q26.2) in homozygous or compound heterozygous form. Indian literature has been quite scant with very few case reports of CARASIL, and only three familial cases were confirmed with mutational analysis. Testi…

The case for the use of telehealth for abortion in India.

India has the world's fastest growing outbreak of COVID-19. With limited mobility, increased reports of intimate partner violence, changes in living patterns of migrants, delays in accessing contraception and safe abortion care, and potential changes to decisions about parenting, there may be an increased need for abortion services in India due to the pandemic. The use of technology for providing abortion information and services has been well documented in global literature. The safety of abortion provision using telehealth has been established in several contexts including the United States …

Economic gradient of onset of disability in India.

BACKGROUND: Disability in India is associated with increasing non-communicable diseases, rising longevity, and increasing accidents and injuries. Though studies have examined prevalence, patterns, and socioeconomic correlates of disability, no attempt has been made in estimating age of onset of disability in India. OBJECTIVE: This paper investigates the economic gradient of age of onset of locomotor, visual, hearing, speech, mental retardation, mental illness, and other disabilities in India. METHOD: We use nationally representative data of 106,894 disabled individuals from the 76th round of…

Operational guidelines for ROP in India: A summary.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding disease of the eye that can affect infants born four or more weeks preterm and have received intensive neonatal care. ROP is a dynamic, time-bound disease that is not present at birth. Preventing visual loss from ROP in India requires scaling up services for screening and treatment for ROP to match the exponential growth in neonatal intensive care in India and other low- and middle-income countries. Operational guidelines for prevention of visual loss from ROP will facilitate rapid scale up of services, by identifying key players and t…

Tuberculosis control in India: Refocus on nutrition.

Many western societies have eliminated tuberculosis years before the advent of potent anti-tuberculous drugs, as a result of the improved standards of living and good nutrition. But even with the availability of powerful anti-tuberculous drugs, India still has a long road ahead to reach the "End TB by 2025" goal. One of the major reason is that tuberculosis control program in India till now have focused primarily on case detection and medical treatment of active tuberculosis. Drug treatment alone does not completely prevent the occurrence of new infections in the community and also contributes…

The evolutionary dynamics of H1N1/pdm2009 in India.

After the 2009 pandemic H1N1 outbreak, this new reassortant virus replaced the previous seasonal H1N1 and established itself in human populations. In 2014-2015, the H1N1/pdm2009 pandemic strain caused the worst influenza outbreak in India in recent years. It is still unclear whether this outbreak was due to a genetic change in the H1N1/pdm2009 virus. Here, we collected all available data from India, and used data from other South and Southeast Asian countries (Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, and Vietnam) that are geographically nearby India for comparison, to examine the evolutionary dy…

Modelling of road traffic fatalities in India.

Passenger modes in India include walking, cycling, buses, trains, intermediate public transport modes (IPT) such as three-wheeled auto rickshaws or tuk-tuks, motorised two-wheelers (2W) as well as cars. However, epidemiological studies of traffic crashes in India have been limited in their approach to account for the exposure of these road users. In 2011, for the first time, census in India reported travel distance and mode of travel for workers. A Poisson-lognormal mixture regression model is developed at the state level to explore the relationship of road deaths of all the road users with co…
