[The structure of neonatal mortality among infants born in the cephalic and breech presentations in 1992-1994].

This retrospective study, including all postnatal died newborns from 1992 to 1994 in our hospital, shows, that the mortality rate among the breech presentations is several times higher then this among the cephalic presentations. Inborn malformations, specially those of CNS, and birth trauma are with significant higher frequency causes of death in the first group. Intrapartal asphyxia, intraventricular haemorrhages and respiratory distress syndrome are equally presented in the neonatal mortality structure of the newborns in breech and cephalic presentation.

Mortality with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation following repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia in 93 infants.

The results of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) following repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) are analyzed for 93 neonates reported to the Neonatal ECMO Registry. Each infant was symptomatic at birth and developed life-threatening hypoxemia after herniorrhaphy. ECMO was used after neonates met criteria predictive of death in individual centers. These included (1) failure of medical therapy to reverse hypoxemia (35 neonates); (2) acute clinical deterioration making death appear likely (37 neonates); (3) AaDO2 greater than 600 for 8 hours (13 neonates); (4) oxygen index sco

Complications and mortality associated with cardiac catheterization in infants under one year: a prospective study.

To evaluate complications and mortality following cardiac catheterization (CC) in patients under one year of age, we prospectively examined 312 CC on 273 patients from the centers in the New England Regional Infant Cardiac Program during a one-year period. Among CC performed on patients less than four months old, the incidence of complications requiring treatment was 12%; for patients 4-12 months, it was 1.5% (p less than 0.02). By pre-CC risk assessment, 13% of CC were high risk, 21% medium risk, and 66% low risk. The incidence of major complications was much greater among the High Risk (30%)

Infant mortality and causes of death by birth weight for gestational age in non-malformed singleton infants: a 2002-2012 population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the associations between birth weight for gestational age (GA) and infant mortality as well as causes of infant death. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based observational study conducted between 2002 and 2012 included 203,620 non-malformed singleton live births from Slovenia. Poisson regression analyses were performed to estimate the crude relative risk (RR) and adjusted RR (aRR) for infant mortality by birth weight percentiles stratified by the GA subgroups term, moderate-to-late preterm, very preterm and extremely preterm. RESULTS: Compared with appropriate for GA (AGA) te…

Predicting mortality and short-term outcomes of continuous kidney replacement therapies in neonates and infants.

BACKGROUND: Continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) has emerged as a valuable treatment option in critically ill neonates and infants with acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring dialysis. In this population, we apply artificial intelligence (AI) to identify factors influencing mortality and short-term adverse kidney outcomes. METHODS: The study involved neonates and infants included in the EurAKId Registry (NCT02960867), who underwent CKRT treatment. Using the AI XGBoost models, we identified key clinical factors associated with short-term outcomes: mortality before hospital discharge, as w

Seasonality of pneumonia mortality among infants in India from 2018 - 2020: a joinpoint analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality is often considered a key indicator of a country’s overall progress and health development. Pneumonia, the second leading cause of infant deaths, accounts for 16.2% of mortality in this age group. The Sample Registration System (SRS) 2023 reported that India’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) declined from 40 per 1,000 live births in 2013 to 25 per 1,000 live births in 2023, reflecting substantial progress. However, further reduction is still required to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3, which targets a reduction in infant and child mortality. We examined the seas…

Survival and Associated Factors for Mortality Among Infants with Tetralogy of Fallot in a Middle-Income Country.

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common cyanotic heart disease, yet population-based survival data from low- and middle-income countries remain limited. This study evaluated survival up to 15 years of age and identified factors associated with mortality in Malaysia. This population-based cohort included all children with TOF registered in the Paediatric Cardiology Clinical Information System who were born between 2006 and 2022. Clinical characteristics and outcomes were analysed. Kaplan-Meier analysis estimated survival probabilities at 1, 5, 10, and 15 years, while Cox proportional hazar

Trends in Mortality and Morbidities for Infants Born 24 to 28 Weeks in the US: 1997-2021.

BACKGROUND: Mortality and morbidity for very preterm infants in the United States decreased for years. The current study describes recent changes to assess whether the pace of improvement has changed. METHODS: Vermont Oxford Network members contributed data on infants born at 24 to 28 weeks' gestation from 1997 to 2021. We modeled mortality, late-onset sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, chronic lung disease, severe intraventricular hemorrhage, severe retinopathy of prematurity, and death or morbidity by year of birth using segmented relative risk regression, reporting risk-adjusted annual per

Genetic disorders and their association with morbidity and mortality in early preterm small for gestational age infants.

BACKGROUND: Early preterm (<34 weeks of gestation) small for gestational age infants (<10th percentile birth weight for sex and gestational age) experience high rates of morbidity and mortality, the causes of which are poorly understood. Mounting evidence suggests that genetic disorders contribute. Scarce data exist regarding the prevalence of genetic disorders and their contribution to morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the proportion of genetic disorders in early preterm small for gestational age infants (with and without congenital anomalies) compared to earl

Association of small-for-gestational-age status with mortality and morbidity in very preterm Chinese infants.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm infants born small for gestational age (SGA) are at risk for short- and long-term excess mortality and morbidity resulting from immaturity and deficient intrauterine growth. However, previous findings are inconclusive, and there is a paucity of contemporary data in Chinese population. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the excess risks of mortality and morbidity independently associated with SGA birth in very preterm (before 32 weeks of gestation) Chinese infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population included all very preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive ca

Association between pregestational diabetes and mortality among appropriate-for-gestational age birthweight infants.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Existing studies have shown that pregestational diabetes is a significant risk factor for adverse birth outcomes. However, it is unclear, whether pregestational diabetes and neonatal birthweight that is appropriate for the gestational age (AGA), a proxy for overall adequate glycemic control, is associated with higher infant mortality. To address this controversy, this study investigated the relationship between pregestational diabetes and infant mortality in appropriate-for-gestational age infants in the United States. METHODS: Data from the National Vital Statistics Sys…

Impact of being large-for-gestational-age on neonatal mortality and morbidities in extremely premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age (SGA) infants have an increased risk for neonatal mortality and morbidities. However, few studies have examined the risk of large for gestational age (LGA) on these factors. We compared the risk of mortality and morbidities in LGA premature infants with those of appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants. METHODS: Premature infants who were born between 2003 and 2012 at <26 weeks of gestational age were included. Relative risks of mortality and morbidities were evaluated between LGA and AGA infants. RESULTS: From 6898 extremely premature infants, 357

Nasal continuous positive airway pressure levels for the prevention of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are at risk of lung atelectasis due to various anatomical and physiological immaturities, placing them at high risk of respiratory failure and associated harms. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a positive pressure applied to the airways via the nares. It helps prevent atelectasis and supports adequate gas exchange in spontaneously breathing infants. Nasal CPAP is used in the care of preterm infants around the world. Despite its common use, the appropriate pressure levels to apply during nasal CPAP use remain uncertain. OBJECTIVES: To assess the e
