Morphological changes of intracranial pressure quantifies vasodilatory effect of verapamil to treat cerebral vasospasm.

INTRODUCTION: After aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), both proximal and distal cerebral vasospasm can contribute to the development of delayed cerebral ischemia. Intra-arterial (IA) vasodilators are a mainstay of treatment for distal arterial vasospasm, but no methods of assessing the efficacy of interventions in real time have been established. OBJECTIVE: To introduce a new method for continuous intraprocedural assessment of endovascular treatment for cerebral vasospasm. METHODS: The premise of our approach was that distal cerebral arterial changes induce a consistent pattern in the

Not The Classic Waxing and Waning Multiple Sclerosis: A Case Report.

Retinoblastoma is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumor in children. Seeding, specifically the dispersion of the tumor into the adjacent compartments, represents a major parameter determining the degree of retinoblastoma according to the International Classification of Retinoblastoma. In this article we focused on vitreous seeding, one of the main limiting factors in the successful "eye preservation treatment" of retinoblastoma. This article presents an overview of the history of vitreous seeding of retinoblastoma, established treatment procedures and new-research modalities. The

Retinal and optic nerve relapse in retinoblastoma secondary to epiretinal and epipapillary vitreous seeds implantation documented by optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Retinal retinoblastoma growth phenotypes can be endophytic, exophytic, diffuse infiltrating or anterior diffuse. Herein, we describe a novel tumor growth pattern in two patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Imaging with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). RESULTS: Both cases were diagnosed with unilateral group D retinoblastoma treated with first-line or bridge intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC). Case 1 had a new intravitreal/epiretinal relapse 3 months after brachytherapy and intravitreal chemotherapy. SD-OCT showed a disruption of the inner limiting membrane (INL) u

Development of a model for Parkinson's disease in sheep using unilateral intracarotid injection of MPTP via slow continuous infusion.

The effects of unilateral intracarotid administration of MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) in sheep were studied with the goal of producing a non-primate, large animal model of Parkinson's Disease. Adult female sheep were given an acute (over 30 min) or chronic (over 1 week) injection of MPTP (0.4-5.0 mg/kg) via the common carotid artery. Both methods produced parkinsonian-like behavior. Turning contralateral to the side of injection was induced by apomorphine (APO) in both groups. However, amphetamine (AMP) induced ipsilateral turning only in the chronic treatment group. Acu

[Persistent value of intra-arterial fibrinolysis 8 hours or more following central retinal artery occlusion or of its branches].

PURPOSE: To establish that intra-arterial fibrinolysis of the ophthalmic artery can still be efficient 8 hours or more after a central retinal artery occlusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nine to twenty hours (average 12.5 H) after a loss of vision due to a central retinal artery occlusion or the occlusion of its branches, 7 patients were treated by intra-arterial fibrinolysis. The vision of the affected eye was limited to light perception for four patients, to hand movement at 1 meter for two patients, and to 4/10 P2 for one patient. Under radiological guidance, 300.000 IU of urokinase was inject

Effects of prostaglandins and several vasoactive substances on blood pressure, respiration and blood flow by intra-ventricular, intra-arterial and intravenous routes.

Differences by routes of administration of the effects of prostaglandins and vasoactive substances on blood pressure, peripheral blood flow and respiration were investigated. Intravenous prostaglandins evoked respiratory excitation in rabbits, and lowered blood pressure more prominently and longer after intracarotid injection than after the intrajugular administration. The effects of prostaglandins were apparently more conspicuous after vertebral artery than via carotid artery. In rats, 1 microgram/kg i.v. of PGE1 and PGE2 caused a fall of blood pressure but 1 microgram/kg i.v. of PGF2 alpha c

Efficacy of a blood substitute (Fluosol-DA, 20%) on cerebral ischemia.

Fluosol-DA, 20%, was intravenously infused in 28 patients suffering from cerebrovascular disease, and was found to be effective in 60% of the cases with vasospasm and in 80% of the cases with stenosis and/or occlusion of the artery. Administration of the solution increases r-CBF by 10.1 to 37.9% when measured by either intra-arterial injection or inhalation of 133Xe. However, an increase of arterial oxygen tension appears to have little effect on r-CBF after administration of the solution. The increase of r-CBF caused by Fluosol-DA, 20%, may be due not only to the lowering viscosity of the mix

Blood-brain barrier transfer and cerebral uptake of antiepileptic drugs.

The permeability across the blood-brain barrier of phenobarbital, phenytoin, clonazepam, and diazepam was determined in a total of 29 patients with the double-indicator dilution method. Cerebral blood flow was measured with the 133Xe intra-arterial injection method. The unidirectional extraction (E) of the four drugs was 0.07, 0.11, 0.42, and 0.42, respectively. Permeability surface area products (PS) calculated for the drugs depended on E as well as on the plasma protein binding of the drugs and the cerebral blood flow and was calculated as 0.1, 0.5, 0.5, and 2.6 ml gm-1 min-1, respectively.

The Bezold-Jarisch-like effect induced by veratridine and its potentiation by scropion toxin in the rat.

The Bezold-Jarisch-like effect (BJE) induced by 2.5 micrograms/100 g of veratridine injected intravenously or into the left ventricle was studied in anesthetized rats. The possible potentiation of the effect by a small dose (10 micrograms/100 g) of a purified scorpion toxin (tityustoxin) was also investigated. Heart rate (HR), electrocardiogram (ECG), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and respiratory rate (RR) were recorded. Intravenous (iv) injection of veratridine induced a BJE consisting of slight bradycardia in 4 out of 8 experiments, fall of MAP (from 107 +/- 3 to 90 +/- 4 mmHg) and apnea. The

Micro-CT technique for three-dimensional visualization of human stem cells.

Micro-CT offers high spatial resolution of the distribution of stem cells and provides rapid reconstruction of 3D images and quantitative volumetric analysis. Together with real-time PCR analysis, micro-CT offers the possibility to obtain a quantification of the number of cells that are able to migrate from the bloodstream inside the muscular tissues. Here, we studied for the first time the kinetics of the human cells injected into the femoral artery of DMD animal model. It is fundamental to determine whether the cells disseminate and entrap only within the capillary system of downstream muscl

Intra-arterial Drug Delivery to the Ischemic Brain in Rat Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Model.

Rat transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) model is one of the most commonly used animal models in ischemic stroke studies. In the model, increasing safety and efficacy of therapeutic agent administration, such as stem cells and drugs directly to the ischemic brain using the internal carotid artery (ICA) is essential, because using the common carotid artery (CCA) for injection can close CCA completely and cause many complications after tMCAO surgery. Also, the pterygopalatine artery (PPA) is an arterial branch of the ICA that supplies blood circulation of the external part of the b

Acute Orbital Compromise after Intra-Arterial Chemotherapy in a Complex Retinoblastoma Associated with 13q Deletion Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) is increasingly used as a first-line therapy for retinoblastoma. The IAC has proved to be relatively safe. However, many local side effects of IAC have been described. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a local side effect presenting as proptosis and myositis with vascular access difficulty of the middle meningeal artery, in a 2-year-old male with left eye diffuse multifocal stage Vb retinoblastoma complicated with retinal detachment. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: IAC is assured to provide as efficient results in eliminating the tumor a

Melanocortin antagonists define two distinct pathways of cardiovascular control by alpha- and gamma-melanocyte-stimulating hormones.

Melanocortin peptides and at least two subtypes of melanocortin receptors (MC3-R and MC4-R) are present in brain regions involved in cardiovascular regulation. In urethane-anesthetized rats, unilateral microinjection of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) into the medullary dorsal-vagal complex (DVC) causes dose-dependent (125-250 pmol) hypotension and bradycardia, whereas gamma-MSH is less effective. The effects of alpha-MSH are inhibited by microinjection to the same site of the novel MG4-R/MC3-R antagonist SHU9119 (2-100 pmol) but not naloxone (270 pmol), whereas the similar effects

Efficacy of systemic administration of riboflavin on a rabbit model of corneal alkali burn.

Changes in the barrier mechanisms in the eye should determine the rational route for the administration and dosage of each drug in the treatment of traumatic injuries and other pathologies. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of intra-arterial delivery of 14C-riboflavin (as an "indicator") and compare it with intravenous and intramuscular administration in an animal model of chemical eye burn. 14C-riboflavin (14C-I) was administered by intra-arterial (carotid artery), intravenous (femoral vein) and intramuscular (femoral muscle) routes. The total radioactivity was determined over

[Ophthalmologic complications and local anesthesia. Pathophysiology and types of eye complications after intraoral dental anesthesia, and clinical recommendations].

The present article reviews the different types of ophthalmologic complications following administration of intraoral local anesthesia. Since the first report by Brain in 1936, case reports about that topic have been published regularly in the literature. However, clinical studies evaluating the incidence of ophthalmologic complications after intraoral local anesthesia are rarely available. Previous data point to a frequency ranging from 0.03% to 0.13%. The most frequently described ophthalmologic complications include diplopia (double vision), ptosis (drooping of upper eyelid), and mydriasis

Vasoactivity of adrenaline in regions covering the canine gastrointestinal tract.

Little is known about the action adrenaline has on vascular areas of functionally different parts of the stomach and intestine. Therefore the vasoactivity of adrenaline (1-1024 ng/kg i.v.) was studied by electromagnetic flow measurements in 8 vascular beds covering the gastrointestinal tract. Adrenaline induced 1) a vasodilation in the lesser curvature and antrum of the stomach; 2) a vasoconstriction in the greater curvature of the stomach; 3) a vasoconstriction followed by a vasodilation in the duodenum and jejunum; 4) a vasoconstriction in the ileum, caecum/colon and colon/rectum. [Animal experiment studies of embolia cutis medicamentosa].

Embolia cutis medicamentosa (ECM) is a rare complication after intramuscular injection of certain drugs, resulting in local necrosis of skin and muscle at the injection site. The pathogenesis is still not clear. Drugs and their effective substances, from which an ECM recently was described (depot penicilline, antirheumatic drug combinations), were injected intraarterially, periarterially, and intramuscularly into the hind legs of rats. The legs were examined macroscopically and histologically. Complete skin and muscle necrosis of the hind leg was only found after intraarterial injection of the

Rat sarcoma model supports both "soil seed" and "mechanical" theories of metastatic spread.

Following injection into the portal venous or vena caval systems, tumour cells are held up almost exclusively in the liver or lung respectively, and subsequent outgrowth of tumour only occurs in these organs. Following systemic arterial injection, cells are distributed, and subsequently grow, in a variety of organs. However, the adrenal gland supports tumour growth from much fewer cells than the lung, and this is partly due to the fact the rate of tumour cell loss in the initial 48 h is very high in the latter compared to the former organ.
