A mathematical model for assessing control strategies against West Nile virus.

Since its incursion into North America in 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) has spread rapidly across the continent resulting in numerous human infections and deaths. Owing to the absence of an effective diagnostic test and therapeutic treatment against WNV, public health officials have focussed on the use of preventive measures in an attempt to halt the spread of WNV in humans. The aim of this paper is to use mathematical modelling and analysis to assess two main anti-WNV preventive strategies, namely: mosquito reduction strategies and personal protection. We propose a single-season ordinary differ

Sublethal doses of fipronil intensify synapsin immunostaining in Atta sexdens rubropilosa (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) brains.

BACKGROUND: Although ants are common insects in agricultural ecosystems, few studies have considered how xenobiotics might induce physiological and morphological alterations in these insects. This study aimed to verify the neurotoxic action of sublethal doses of fipronil on the mushroom bodies of brains from the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa through immunocytochemistry analysis for the protein synapsin. RESULTS: The LD50 value was established as 1.42 ng ant(-1), and the sublethal doses used were LD50/10 and LD50/100. Synapsin labelling was more evident in the brains extracted from

Cellular in vitro assays in the diagnosis of Hymenoptera venom allergy.

BACKGROUND: The current diagnostic procedures of anaphylactic reactions to hymenoptera stings include intradermal tests, venom-specific IgE (sIgE) and possibly sting challenge tests. Sometimes, the culprit insect remains unidentified. The usefulness of the cellular assays CAST-ELISA and Flow-CAST in the management of hymenoptera venom allergy was investigated. METHODS: 134 patients with systemic reactions after a yellow jacket wasp and/or honey bee sting and 44 healthy controls underwent skin tests, as well as determination of sIgE (CAP-FEIA), leukocyte sulfidoleukotriene release (CAST-ELISA)

When Small Meets Smaller: Immune Modulation and Virulence Strategies in Insect-Bacteria Interactions.

Insects represent powerful experimental systems for investigating host-microorganism interactions, providing valuable insights into bacterial pathogenicity, immune regulation, symbiosis, and antimicrobial discovery. This review examines the complex relationships between insects and bacteria, focusing on the mechanisms that control infection, immune activation, and microbial adaptation. Particular attention is given to the routes of pathogen entry and to the conserved innate immune pathways that coordinate host defenses, including the Toll, Imd, Duox, and Jak/Stat signaling cascades. The review

Gene Regulatory Network Reconstruction to Decipher the Molecular Mechanisms Governing Bacteriocyte-Based Symbioses.

Intracellular bacteria with beneficial roles for their hosts are present in more than 10% of all insect species. In intracellular nutritional symbioses, these symbionts are typically confined to specialized host cells known as bacteriocytes. Bacteriocytes are remarkable novel cells that arose independently and repeatedly across multiple insect lineages. They are fascinating structures, yet the molecular mechanisms regulating their development, function and even their evolutionary origins, remain largely unknown. Nonetheless, an important role for certain transcription factors in development an

Methyl 3-indolyacetate produced by a gut bacterium of the tephritid gall fly is implicated in controlling Crofton weed by reducing its lignin synthesis.

Eupatorium adenophorum, an invasive plant species of global concern, imposes substantial ecological and economic burdens across its introduced range. This study investigated the tripartite interaction between E. adenophorum, its obligate phytophagous insect Procecidochares utilis, and the insect's enteric microbiota. We isolated Kluyvera ascorbata ZLSY22, a gut-associated bacterium from P. utilis larvae, demonstrating potent herbicidal activity against the host plant. Bioactivity-guided characterization identified methyl 3-indolyacetate (MeIAA) as the principal phytotoxin, exhibiting concentra

Intestinal Morphometry, Enzymatic and Microbial Activity in Laying Hens Fed Different Levels of a Hermetia illucens Larvae Meal and Toxic Elements Content of the Insect Meal and Diets.

To evaluate the effects of feeding a Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae meal on the different intestinal traits of hens, and to determine the toxic elements' concentration in the insect meal and diets, 162 hens were randomly allotted to three groups. The control received a corn-soybean meal-based diet (SBM); the HI25 and HI50 groups received two diets in which the 25% and 50% of the dietary protein were replaced by the HI protein, respectively. The duodenal and jejunal villi height and villi/crypt were higher (p < 0.01) in the SBM than in the HI groups. The ileal villi height was higher (p < 0.05)

Proteomic analysis of a mosquito host cell response to persistent Wolbachia infection.

Wolbachia pipientis, an obligate intracellular bacterium associated with arthropods and filarial worms, is a target for filarial disease treatment and provides a gene drive agent for insect vector population suppression/replacement. We compared proteomes of Aedes albopictus mosquito C/wStr1 cells persistently infected with Wolbachia strain wStr, relative to uninfected C7-10 control cells. Among approximately 2500 proteins, iTRAQ data identified 815 differentially abundant proteins. As functional classes, energy and central intermediary metabolism proteins were elevated in infected cells, while

Aboveground insect infestation attenuates belowground Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens causes crown gall disease. Although Agrobacterium can be popularly used for genetic engineering, the influence of aboveground insect infestation on Agrobacterium induced gall formation has not been investigated. Nicotiana benthamiana leaves were exposed to a sucking insect (whitefly) infestation and benzothiadiazole (BTH) for 7 d, and these exposed plants were inoculated with a tumorigenic Agrobacterium strain. We evaluated, both in planta and in vitro, how whitefly infestation affects crown gall disease. Whitefly-infested plants exhibited at least a two-fold reductio

Computational Tools and Lessons Learned from Annotating Transposable Elements in Insect Genomes.

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile, repeated DNA sequences whose evolutionary relationships with host genomes span the full spectrum from parasitism to mutualism. Within Insecta, one of the most species-rich animal groups, TE content and family richness vary dramatically, yet annotation efforts have historically concentrated on Drosophila, leaving roughly half of non-drosophilid insect TEs classified as unknown. Insect genomes thus represent a vast, largely untapped reservoir of TE diversity. This review guides newcomers through the annotation of TEs in insect genomes, clarifying what can

Toxin diversity revealed by the venom gland transcriptome of Pardosa pseudoannulata, a natural enemy of several insect pests.

The pond wolf spider, Pardosa pseudoannulata, is one of the most dominant predators of several agriculture insect pests including mainly the rice planthoppers and leafhoppers in paddy fields in Asia. Venom has been an attractive subject as the powerful weapon of spiders due to the complex components secreted from venom gland. The transcriptome of P. pseudoannulata venom gland was sequenced in order to understand the diversity of venom components at the molecular level and provide a new perspective for insect pest management. A total of 48 potential peptide toxins were identified from 75,980 as

Infestation mechanisms of two woodborer species in the mangrove Sonneratia alba J. Smith in Kenya and co-occurring endophytic fungi.

Insect damage on trees can severely affect the quality of timber, reduce the fecundity of the host and render it susceptible to fungal infestation and disease. Such pathology weakens or eventually kills the host. Infestation by two insect woodborer species (a moth and a beetle) is causing mortality of Sonneratia alba, a wide-ranging pioneer mangrove species of the Indo-Pacific. Establishing the infestation mechanism of the two insect woodborer species is an initial and essential step towards understanding their ecological role in the mangroves and in determining sustainable management prioriti

The zig-zag model of molecular defense and counterdefense in plant-herbivore interactions.

Plant-herbivore interactions follow zig-zag-like cycles in which herbivore- and damage-derived cues activate conserved defense signaling hubs, while insect effectors suppress or redirect these pathways, creating recurrent molecular bottlenecks that shape plant resistance. Plant-herbivore interactions are orchestrated through a dynamic molecular dialogue at the feeding interface, wherein insect attack triggers the generation of damage-derived signals from plant tissues and herbivore-derived signals from oral or salivary secretions. These cues can activate plant defense by sensing the damage- an

Analysis of Peptide Ligand Specificity of Different Insect Adipokinetic Hormone Receptors.

Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) is a highly researched insect neuropeptide that induces the mobilization of carbohydrates and lipids from the fat body at times of high physical activity, such as flight and locomotion. As a naturally occurring ligand, AKH has undergone quite a number of amino acid changes throughout evolution, and in some insect species multiple AKHs are present. AKH acts by binding to a rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor, which is related to the vertebrate gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors. In the current study, we have cloned AKH receptors (AKHRs) from seven differen

Immunological control of ectoparasites: past achievements and future research priorities.

Recombinant vaccines are available for the control of the tick Boophilus microplus, while progress has been made in the development of vaccines against Lucilia cuprina and Chrysomya bezziana. Literature suggests that the control of other ectoparasites is feasible, either through the duplication in a vaccine of naturally acquired immunity or through 'concealed' antigen vaccines. Major deficiencies in our current knowledge however point to possible research opportunities for the future. The identification of protective antigens from all species is proceeding slowly, particularly for the antigens
