Fifteen-minute consultation: Modern-day art and science of managing cerebral palsy.

While there remains limited intervention to address the damage to the developing brain, current multidisciplinary management of cerebral palsy (CP) needs to minimise the impact of secondary musculoskeletal complications. A focus on comorbidities to maximise function for activity and participation by supporting the child and family in their environment is required. Comprehensive clinical guidance was published by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) earlier this year. This article aims to provide a practical clinical approach to the child and family based on:(1) art: empathy

Determinants of quality of life in children with cerebral palsy: a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach.

This study investigated the determinants of quality of life (QOL) of children with cerebral palsy (CP) considering possible variables comprehensively from a biopsychosocial perspective by adopting the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and using a CP-specific QOL questionnaire. A total of 167 children with CP (mean age 9.06 years, SD 2.61 years) and their caregivers participated in this study. Children's QOL was measured by the Cerebral Palsy Quality of Life for Children (CP QOL-Child) - primary caregiver proxy-report form. The potential determinants of QO…

Development and validation of a Chinese self-management ability assessment scale for patients with spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a scale for assessing self-management ability tailored for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: The theoretical framework for the scale was the Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change as well as the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. The initial version of the scale was developed through literature review, qualitative interviews, and the Delphi expert consensus method. A total of 295 patients with SCI participated in the reliability and validity testing. RESULTS: The final scale consisted of 45 items across 5

Reliability of a Spinal Cord Injury-Specific Extension of the Work Rehabilitation Questionnaire (WORQ-SCI).

PURPOSE: The Work Rehabilitation Questionnaire (WORQ), an International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF)-based questionnaire, was developed to assess work-related functioning of persons with a range of health conditions. The WORQ has shown limitations in its applicability to persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). The purpose of this study was to investigate internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and agreement of the WORQ-SCI, a newly developed extension to the WORQ for use in persons with SCI. METHODS: A cross-sectional and test-retest reliability study was

Opening the black box: lessons learned from an interdisciplinary inquiry into the learning-based contents of brain injury rehabilitation.

This article describes challenges encountered and lessons learned in an effort to explore the black box of rehabilitation. A multidisciplinary team created detailed, mutually exclusive operational definitions for the contents of learning-based treatments administered in a brain injury unit. The function and activity levels of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health were used to organize content definitions, which included examples of therapy activities and therapist behaviors, such as cues. Pairs of trained coders independently identified defined learning episode…

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a condition that affects patients of all ages, starting with childhood. There are two peaks in its incidence, i.e., in childhood and another one in patients over 40 years of age, which increases continuously with patient age. It is a condition recognized by the World Health Organization as a set of diseases (International Classification of Diseases, ICD-10), and the International Classification of Functionality recognizes the associated extreme disablement. UI is a major health problem affecting the lives of an estimated 400 million persons worldwide. The global ag
