[Nocturnal eating disorder--sleep or eating disorder?].

Nocturnal eating disorder (NED) is a rare syndrome that includes disorders of both eating and sleeping. It is characterized by awakening in the middle of the night, getting out of bed, and consuming large quantities of food quickly and uncontrollably, then returning to sleep. This may occur several times during the night. Some patients are fully conscious during their nocturnal eating, while some indicate total amnesia. The etiology of NED is still unclear, as research findings are contradictory. Those suffering from NED exhibit various levels of anxiety and depression, and many lead stressful

Mindfulness Therapy for Maladaptive Interpersonal Dependency: A Preliminary Randomized Controlled Trial.

Existing treatments for maladaptive interpersonal dependency and dependent personality disorder do not meet basic scientific standards for effectiveness. The present investigation tested the efficacy of a mindfulness-based approach: mindfulness therapy for maladaptive interpersonal dependency (MT-MID). Forty-eight participants who reported consistently high levels of maladaptive dependency (i.e., scored higher than 1 standard deviation above the mean on the Interpersonal Dependency Inventory at two separate assessments) were randomized to either 5 sessions of MT-MID or a minimal contact contro

Implicit theories of personality and attributions of hostile intent: a meta-analysis, an experiment, and a longitudinal intervention.

Past research has shown that hostile schemas and adverse experiences predict the hostile attributional bias. This research proposes that seemingly nonhostile beliefs (implicit theories about the malleability of personality) may also play a role in shaping it. Study 1 meta-analytically summarized 11 original tests of this hypothesis (N = 1,659), and showed that among diverse adolescents aged 13-16 a fixed or entity theory about personality traits predicted greater hostile attributional biases, which mediated an effect on aggressive desires. Study 2 experimentally changed adolescents' implicit t

Practical tips for sexual counseling and psychotherapy in premature ejaculation.

INTRODUCTION: A number of milestones in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) have occurred over the past five decades, including the development of various behavioral and cognitive techniques as well as pharmacotherapies that modify neurophysiological processes involved in ejaculation. Nevertheless, the notion that sexual responses such as PE are influenced by physiological, psychobehavioral, cultural, and relationship factors is as valid now as it was 50 years ago, and therefore, interventions should consider all such domains in the development of effective treatment strategies. AIM:

Treatment utility of psychological assessment.

This article focuses on treatment utility. A definition of treatment utility was provided by S. C. Hayes, R. O. Nelson, and R. B. Jarrett (1987): "We propose to use the phrase the treatment utility of assessment to refer to the degree to which assessment is shown to contribute to beneficial treatment outcome" (p. 963). Various methodologies to examine the treatment utility of assessment are summarized. Treatment utility studies using various assessment procedures (i.e., diagnosis and functional analysis) and various disorders (i.e., unipolar depression, social or interpersonal problems, and ph

What happens after being not-on-track? Patterns of change, profiles and prediction of at-risk patients.

OBJECTIVES: Clinicians often struggle to accurately identify patients at risk of treatment failure. Feedback-informed treatment offers real-time outcome monitoring to help detect and address potential treatment failures early. This study examined patterns of change among not-on-track (NOT) patients during feedback-informed treatment, explored how patients' characteristics related to these patterns, and assessed the feasibility of predicting them. METHOD: Data from 573 NOT patients in a university outpatient psychotherapy clinic were analyzed. Growth mixture modeling identified distinct change

An Integrated Treatment Approach for Bipolar II Disorder: A Clinical Case Study.

Background/Objectives: Bipolar II disorder is frequently misdiagnosed as unipolar depression, particularly when depressive symptoms predominate and hypomanic features are subtle or overlooked. This case study describes a patient initially treated for postpartum depression who later developed antidepressant-induced hypomanic symptoms, leading to the correct diagnosis of bipolar II disorder. The objective is to illustrate diagnostic complexities and highlight the value of an integrated treatment approach. Methods: Clinical assessment included standardized mood rating scales, structured interview

The role of suicidal motivations in adolescence: implications for the psychotherapeutic treatment of suicidal risk.

The study of suicidal risk has increasingly emphasized the importance of assessing specific suicidal motivations. Motivations express an elaboration of the condition of psychache, representing an effective perspective on the management of suicidal risk in psychotherapy. This study explores suicidal motivations and personality pathology in a clinical sample of adolescents with suicidal ideation or a history of suicide attempts. We aim to investigate how specific motivational factors and personality disorders (PDs) contribute to the foreseeability of suicidal outcomes, such as the occurrence, nu

A Pilot Study of Perspective Taking and Emotional Contagion in Mental Health Professionals: Glass Brain View of Empathy.

BACKGROUND: Empathy plays a fundamental role in the context of psychotherapy. Mental health professionals (MHP) are required to express empathy on a daily basis. "Perspective taking" (cognitive empathy) and "emotional contagion" (affective empathy) are elements of empathy that are both innate and acquired. This study aimed to explore the underlying neural correlates of empathy using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHOD: A total of six healthy subjects from MHP and other professionals (OP) were recruited in a single-assessment study design. Subjects were screened using the Mini

"Despite the Differences, We Were All the Same". Group Cohesion in Diagnosis-Specific and Transdiagnostic CBT Groups for Anxiety and Depression: A Qualitative Study.

Group cohesion refers to a sense of belonging, mutual support and identification with other group members. Group cohesion has been associated with better outcomes, lower drop-out rates, more interpersonal support and better participation in psychotherapy. Nevertheless, the role of group cohesion in CBT has not yet received much attention. The rationale for delivering CBT in groups is that patients can model themselves through each other due to their similarities in symptoms. However, there has recently been a shift towards transdiagnostic CBT protocols, in which patients with varied diagnoses

Feasibility, preliminary efficacy, and safety of a randomized clinical trial for Asian Women's Action for Resilience and Empowerment (AWARE) intervention.

To our knowledge, Asian Women's Action for Resilience and Empowerment (AWARE) is the first gender- and culture-specific and trauma-informed group psychotherapy intervention designed for Asian-American young women with histories of interpersonal violence and trauma and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) diagnosis. We employed a 2-arm randomized controlled trial. Sixty-three women who met clinical criteria for trauma were randomized to the intervention (n = 32) or waitlist control (n = 31) group. We documented retention rates, preliminary efficacy for sexual risk behaviors and depressive s

Mechanisms of action in AWARE: A culturally informed intervention for 1.5- and 2nd-generation Asian American women.

Young Asian American women have high rates of depression and suicidality; however, few interventions address the urgent need for culturally informed care. Asian Women's Action for Resilience and Empowerment (AWARE) aims to be the first gender and culturally specific group psychotherapy intervention designed to improve mental and sexual health in Asian American women with trauma. This article specifically focuses on identifying the mechanisms of action that were responsible for improving mental health and well-being among those who participated in AWARE randomized controlled trial. Of the 435 w

Dynamic Psychotherapy: The Therapeutic Process in the Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Dynamic Psychotherapy (DP) was developed to overcome the limitations of traditional psychoanalysis, responding to a broader demand of patients who seek help to cope with specific problems in the short term, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is a chronic disabling mental disorder that leads to substantial distress, functional disability and severe occupational and social impairments. Recognizing the literature gap in this field, and the improvements reported by dynamic therapists who have dealt with patients suffering from OCD, a study on the treatment of these patients was condu

You really are too kind: implications regarding friendly submissiveness in trainee therapists.

To facilitate patient growth, therapists must immerse themselves in the patient's world while also being able to see what is needed for change. This process requires finding a delicate balance between supporting and pushing patients. Therapists in training are additionally tasked with incorporating supervisors' suggestions with their own views on what is needed to help their patients. Beginning therapists with tendencies to be overly accommodating may struggle to reconcile these competing demands. Thus, the aim of the present work is to explore how trainee friendly submissiveness (FS) interfac

Effects of ecstasy on cooperative behaviour and perception of trustworthiness: a naturalistic study.

BACKGROUND: Acute recreational use of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; 'ecstasy') can promote pro-social effects which may alter interpersonal perceptions. AIMS: To explore such effects, this study investigated whether acute recreational use of ecstasy was associated with changes in individual perception of trustworthiness of people's faces and co-operative behaviours. METHOD: An independent group, repeated measures design was used in which 17 ecstasy users were tested on the night of drug use (day 0) and again three days later (day 3); 22 controls were tested on parallel days.
