Case analysis of long-term negative psychological responses to psychedelics.

Recent controversies have arisen regarding claims of uncritical positive regard and hype surrounding psychedelic drugs and their therapeutic potential. Criticisms have included that study designs and reporting styles bias positive over negative outcomes. The present study was motivated by a desire to address this alleged bias by intentionally focusing exclusively on negative outcomes, defined as self-perceived 'negative' psychological responses lasting for at least 72 h after psychedelic use. A strong justification for this selective focus was that it might improve our ability to capture other

The weight concerns scale in Australian adolescents: Factor structure, gender invariance, and screening utility.

Despite the increased incidence of disordered eating among adolescents and low help-seeking rates, there is currently a lack of evidence supporting use of screening tools for this population. The present study aimed to address this gap by examining the factor structure, gender invariance, and psychological correlates of the Weight Concerns Scale (WCS) in a large sample of Australian adolescents to evaluate its potential suitability as a screening tool. Participants (n = 1022) aged 12-17 (Mage = 14.73; SD = 1.55) were recruited from five public secondary schools in South Australia between May a

Psychosocial aspects of patients with Niemann-Pick disease, type B.

Health-care providers have only begun to understand the medical aspects of Niemann-Pick disease type B (NPDB), a relatively rare disease. Even less information is known about the psychological effects of living with NPDB. Patients with NPDB and their families face numerous psychological stressors including extensive medical testing, uncertainty of diagnosis, living and coping with a chronic illness, and grief and bereavement surrounding this progressively debilitating, and, ultimately, fatal disease. We used a qualitative case study approach to explore the human experiences of NPDB patients an

Long-term follow-up of women and men after unsuccessful IVF.

The experience of 92 couples, who had unsuccessfully undergone one or more IVF cycles at a university clinic, was evaluated 3-8 years following their last failed attempt. One member of each couple completed a telephone questionnaire regarding life events during their last IVF cycle performed at the clinic and at the time of the interview. Some couples had continued further treatment and some had not. Multivariate correspondence analysis was used to analyse the data. Regarding the long-term experience of couples who had undergone further treatment, for men the main experiences were psychologica

Women's experiences of a randomised controlled trial of a specialist psychological advocacy intervention following domestic violence: A nested qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Women's experience of domestic violence and abuse (DVA) is associated with mental illness which may not be addressed by domestic violence advocacy. The study aimed to compare the experiences of women receiving a psychological intervention with women receiving usual advocacy in a randomized controlled trial (PATH: Psychological Advocacy Towards Healing), to illuminate the trial results by exploring women's experiences of benefits and difficulties. METHODS: A qualitative study nested within the PATH trial, based in two DVA agencies in the UK. A purposive sample of thirty-one interve

Psychological distress and quality of life: rationale and protocol of a prospective cohort study in a rural district in Bangaladesh.

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of the global burden of disease has been attributed to mental and behavioural disorders. People with mental disorders (MDs) have lower levels of health-related quality of life than those without MDs. Several studies have shown that in low-resource countries, a range of social determinants including poor health literacy is critical in the epidemiological transition of disease outcome. There is a lack of evidence of MDs literacy, the prevalence and risk factors of common mental health conditions, or any validated instruments to measure psychological distres

The evolution of psychological distress trajectories in women diagnosed with advanced breast cancer: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression (distress) over the first year following the initial adjuvant therapy for advanced breast cancer (ABC) remain poorly documented in non-Caucasian populations. This study describes trajectories of distress and their determinants in Chinese women with ABC. METHODS: Of the 228 Chinese women newly diagnosed with ABC recruited from six oncology units, 192 completed an interview before their first course of chemotherapy (baseline) and follow-up interviews at 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 months thereafter. At baseline, participants were assessed for supportive care needs, psyc

Childhood sexual, physical, and psychological abuse and their relationship to comorbid psychopathology in bulimia nervosa.

We examined the relationship between childhood sexual, physical, psychological, and "multiple" abuse (i.e., abuse in more than one form) and comorbid Axis I and personality psychopathology among women with a lifetime history of bulimia nervosa (BN group; n =s 80) and a control group of noneating-disordered women (n = 40). Subjects were recruited primarily by newspaper advertisement. They participated in structured clinical interviews for diagnosis of Axis I and personality pathology, and they completed child abuse questionnaires in the interview setting. At odds with prediction, child abuse in

Anxiety, stress, and psychological capital among multiparous women: a cross-sectional study of second pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: The transition to motherhood during a second pregnancy can present distinct psychological challenges, particularly anxiety and stress, despite prior maternal experience. Psychological capital (PsyCap), comprising hope, optimism, self-efficacy, and resilience, may buffer these adverse effects. This study explores the interrelationships between anxiety, perceived stress, and psychological capital among women pregnant with their second child. METHODS: A descriptive correlational study was conducted on 400 women attending antenatal clinics in Port Said, Egypt. Participants completed st

Construal level, rumination, and psychological distress in palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a life-limiting illness, such as cancer, and their carers experience elevated psychological distress. However, the psychological mechanisms underpinning distress in palliative care have been little studied. Recent theories predict that individuals who experience increased uncertainty in the context of ongoing difficulties, such as palliative patients and their carers, will (a) think more abstractly; (b) ruminate more; and (c) be more distressed. METHODS: Palliative patients (n = 36, 90% with cancer), their carers (n = 29), and age-matched controls (n = 30) completed
