Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a severe condition, characterised by left ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction, necessitating heart transplantation when all other treatment options fail. This case report describes a 2-year-old girl initially presenting with oedema, listlessness, and severe iron deficiency anaemia. She was diagnosed with DCM. Extensive diagnostic workup ruled out other causes, leading to the suspicion of DCM due to alimentary iron deficiency. This was confirmed by the parents' report that the girl was fed almost exclusively with low-fat cow's milk. Prompt treatment, in

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of disorders may be attributable to multiple causal factors simultaneously. This study sought to investigate how frequently, and which causes coexist in patients with iron deficiency.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients who applied to the Iron Deficiency Outpatient Clinic between January and December 2021 were included in this cross-sectional study. The causes of iron deficiency were extracted from patient files. Analyses were conducted on the entire population as well as three subgroups: women of reproductive age, postmenopausal women, and males. Numbers and frequencie

Iron deficiency in the fetal and neonatal period (perinatal iron deficiency) bodes poorly for neurodevelopment. Given its common occurrence and the negative impact on brain development, a screening and treatment strategy that is focused on optimizing brain development in perinatal iron deficiency is necessary. Pediatric societies currently recommend a universal iron supplementation strategy for full-term and preterm infants that does not consider individual variation in body iron status and thus could lead to undertreatment or overtreatment. Moreover, the focus is on hematological normalcy and

Iron is one of the crucial elements for CNS development and function and its deficiency (ID) is the most common worldwide nutrient deficit in the world. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant women and infants is a worldwide health problem due to its high prevalence and its irreversible long-lasting effects on brain development. Even with iron supplementation, IDA during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding can result in irreversible cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments. The neurovascular unit (NVU) plays an important role in iron transport within the CNS as well as in the blood brain-barr

Introduction: Iron deficiency (ID) has been intricately linked with various inflammatory diseases. Chronic rhinitis stands as one of most common respiratory inflammation disorders in children. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of ID among preschool children with chronic rhinitis and to explore the association between ID and chronic rhinitis in this population. Methods: This cross-sectional study included children aged 3 to 7 years diagnosed with chronic rhinitis. ID was defined as transferrin saturation <20%, with absolute ID being defined as ferritin <15 ng/mL. Logistic regressio

BACKGROUND: Although iron deficiency (ID) is an important and treatable risk factor for heart failure (HF), data on ID are scarce in Asian patients with HF. Therefore, we sought to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of ID in hospitalized Korean patients with HF.
METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter cohort study, 461 patients with acute HF seen at five tertiary centers from January to November 2019 in Korea were enrolled. ID was defined as serum ferritin < 100 μg/L or ferritin 100-299 μg/L in combination with transferrin saturation < 20%.
RESULTS: The patients' mean ag

In the United States, colorectal cancer has the fourth highest amount of annual new cancer cases per year between 2014 and 2018. In this article, the authors review the data and guidelines supporting effective direct visualization and stool-based testing methods of colon cancer screening along with work-up and management of Iron Deficiency Anemia.

Anemia is common during pregnancy, and while most anemia is physiologic, the most common pathologic cause is iron deficiency. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends confirmation of iron deficiency anemia with iron studies when anemia is diagnosed during pregnancy but acknowledges that presumptive treatment for suspected iron deficiency anemia is common in practice. Currently ACOG does not recommend treating iron deficiency without anemia during pregnancy. Though the benefits of treating iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy are clear, the optimal route of i

INTRODUCTION: Several observations have shown that patients with polycythemia have iron deficiency. Our objectives were to report the prevalence of iron deficiency and to evaluate the diagnostic performance of serum ferritin in polycythemia vera.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: This is a retrospective descriptive and analytical study carried out in the internal medicine department of the Henri Mondor Hospital, Aurillac, France. The study involved 114 patients with polycythemia, followed in the department from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2021. To evaluate the diagnostic performance, the JAK2 mutation

INTRODUCTION: It is well known that serum iron parameters are closely related to cardiovascular health. Iron deficiency may lead to significant cardiac problems, such as atrioventricular conduction abnormalities, and systolic and/or diastolic dysfunction. Studies related to the effect of iron deficiency on cardiac functions are limited in children. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of low iron stores on cardiac repolarization parameters which are used to predict arrhythmia and cardiac functions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Onehundred thirty-five children 2 to 18 years of

Background and Objectives: Iron deficiency (ID) is a common comorbidity in patients with heart failure. It is associated with reduced physical performance, frequent hospitalisations for heart failure decompensation, and high cardiovascular and overall mortality. The aim was to determine the prevalence of ID in patients with advanced heart failure on the waiting list for heart transplantation. Methods and Materials: We included 52 patients placed on the waiting list for heart transplantation in 2021 at our centre. The cohort included seven patients with LVAD (left ventricle assist device) as a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the role of iron deficiency in both heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
RECENT FINDINGS: To role of iron deficiency in heart failure is well established and pathophysiologic overlap with pulmonary hypertension exists.
SUMMARY: Iron deficiency is common co-morbidity in heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. The high prevalence is intertwined into the pathophysiology of these conditions (e.g., neurohormonal activation, inflammation). The presence of iron deficiency has a negative impact on cardiomyocytes and cardiac function, skeletal muscle function, an

AIMS: Iron deficiency (ID) is common in patient with chronic heart failure (HF) and has been widely studied. In contrast, data concerning ID in cardiac amyloidosis (CA) are limited. Amyloidosis is a severe and fatal systemic disease, characterized by an accumulation of amyloid fibrils in various tissues/organs, including nerves, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, and heart. Amyloid deposits in the heart eventually cause HF. The main subtypes of CA are light chain (AL), hereditary transthyretin (ATTRv), and wild-type transthyretin (ATTRwt). We performed this study to determine the prevalence, cli

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac tachyarrhythmia and has a rising global prevalence. Given the increasing burden of AF-related symptoms and complications, new approaches to management are required. Anemia and iron deficiency are common conditions in patients with AF. Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests that the presence of anemia may be associated with worse outcome in these patients. The role of anemia and iron deficiency has been extensively explored in other cardiovascular states, such as heart failure and ischemic heart disease. In particular, the role of iron replet

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is common worldwide, and various iron replacement therapies are available. Ferumoxytol is an injectable, high-dose iron formulation (510 mg) that can be administered over a short period (15 min) without test administration. The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2009 for the treatment of IDA in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and in 2018, the indication was expanded to include patients without CKD.
AREAS COVERED: This paper reviews studies testing the efficacy and safety of ferumoxytol in treating IDA compared with o
