INTRODUCTION: Burnout syndrome represents a critical issue in occupational health, particularly in high-demand contexts such as mining, where physical, environmental, and psychosocial risks converge and affect workers' wellbeing and job performance. In this context, the study objective is to analyze the association between psychosocial risk factors and burnout syndrome among mining workers in Moquegua, Peru.
METHODS: A quantitative, analytical cross-sectional study with a non-experimental design was conducted. The study population consisted of 65 workers from a mining unit in Moquegua, Peru.

UNLABELLED: Nurse anesthesia may be a high-risk occupation for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in the workplace. We designed a cross-sectional investigation to study the prevalence of CTS in nurse anesthetists (NAs) as compared with operating room nurses (ORNs). Two-hundred forty-four female operating room workers were classified by job title as NAs (n = 63) and ORNs (n = 181). The case definition of CTS was established by a history of surgical correction or a combination of four positive historical and physical findings. There were 10 cases of CTS in NAs and 10 cases of CTS in ORNs. The crude od

AIM: To survey irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using Rome III criteria among Malays from the north-eastern region of Peninsular Malaysia.
METHODS: A previously validated Malay language Rome III IBS diagnostic questionnaire was used in the current study. A prospective sample of 232 Malay subjects (80% power) was initially screened. Using a stratified random sampling strategy, a total of 221 Malay subjects (112 subjects in a "full time job" and 109 subjects in "no full time job") were recruited. Subjects were visitors (friends and relatives) within the hospital compound and were representative o

BACKGROUND: To date, no large population-based studies have focused on permanent occupational disability after injury of the anterior cruciate ligament as far as we know. The purpose of our study was to determine the risk factors for occupational disability after an injury of the anterior cruciate ligament.
METHODS: We identified a cohort of 2192 active-duty personnel in the Army who had been hospitalized between 1989 and 1997 because of an injury of the anterior cruciate ligament and had completed a health risk-assessment survey. With use of the Total Army Injury and Health Outcomes Database

Hyper-IgE syndromes and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis constitute rare primary immunodeficiency syndromes with an overlapping clinical phenotype. In recent years, a growing number of underlying genetic defects have been identified. To characterize the underlying genetic defects in a large international cohort of 275 patients, of whom 211 had been clinically diagnosed with hyper-IgE syndrome and 64 with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, targeted panel sequencing was performed, relying on Agilent HaloPlex and Illumina MiSeq technologies. The targeted panel sequencing approach allowed us to i

Hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome (HIES) is a primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by recurrent Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections, eczema, skeletal abnormalities and high titers of serum immunoglobulin E. Although the genetic basis of HIES was not known for almost a half century, HIES most frequently exhibits autosomal dominant trait that is transmitted with variable expressivity. Careful genetic studies in recent years identified dominant-negative mutations in human signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) gene as the cause of sporadic and dominant forms o

DIDS is a unique form of combined immune deficiency characterized by an unusual susceptibility to cutaneous viral infections, severe allergies with eosinophilia and elevated immunoglobulin E titers, autoimmunity, and cancer. HSCT is considered the standard of care for this deadly disease. We have retrospectively analyzed the outcome of allogeneic HSCT from unrelated donors in patients with DIDS. Data from four patients, with five transplants, are presented. All patients received transplants from unrelated donors' BM, except for one patient who received a cord blood transplant. PURPOSE: A 30 year-old man with a history of recurrent skin infections as well as elevated serum IgE and eosinophils developed neurological symptoms and had T2-hyperintense lesions observed in cerebral MRI. The immune symptoms were attributed to Hyper IgE syndrome (HIES) and the neurological symptoms with presence of JC virus in cerebrospinal fluid were diagnosed as Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML). The patient was negative for STAT3 mutations. To determine if other mutations explain HIES and/or PML in this subject, his DNA was analyzed by whole genome sequencing.

PURPOSE: Autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome (AD-HIES) due to heterozygous STAT3 mutation is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by eczema, elevated serum IgE, recurrent infections, and connective tissue and skeletal findings. Healing of pneumonias is often abnormal with formation of pneumatoceles and bronchiectasis. We aimed to explore whether healing after lung surgery is also aberrant.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 32 patients with AD-HIES who received lung surgery for the management of pulmonary infections from 1960 to 2011. We collected information in

BACKGROUND: Hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES) is a rare, autosomal-dominant immunodeficiency characterized by eczema, Staphylococcus aureus skin abscesses, pneumonia with pneumatocele formation, Candida infections, and skeletal/connective tissue abnormalities. Recently it was shown that heterozygous signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) mutations cause autosomal-dominant HIES.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the spectrum and functional consequences of heterozygous STAT3 mutations in a cohort of patients with HIES.
METHODS: We sequenced the STAT3 gene in 38 patients with HIES (National I

Skin manifestations are prevalent in primary immunodeficiency disorders (PID). In a large proportion of patients, they manifest as presenting signs and serve as important factors for the early diagnosis of PID. Only a few studies describing the spectrum of skin disorders in PID are available. The objective of the current study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of skin manifestations in children with PID. Participants were 128 pediatric patients with PID (aged <16 years) registered prospectively over 6 years. Skin manifestations were observed in 61 patients (48%), and those ma

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality in women, despite underrepresentation in the medical literature. Women have higher rates of ischemia and no obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA) and myocardial infarction with no obstructive coronary artery disease (MINOCA) compared to men. The aim of this review is to describe the occupational, economic, and psychosocial factors which disproportionately impact women with (M)INOCA. Relevant databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL were searched using keywords related to ischemic heart disease, nonobstructive coronar

OBJECTIVES: Despite the high frequency of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, the relation between work conditions and ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow has not been the object of much research. In the present study, the predictive factors for such ulnar nerve entrapment were determined in a 3-year prospective survey of upper-limb work-related musculoskeletal disorders in repetitive work.
METHODS: In 1993-1994 and 3 years later, 598 workers whose jobs involved repetitive work underwent an examination by their occupational health physicians and completed a self-administered questionnaire

The quality of life of adolescent patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) who have not undergone intracardiac repair was investigated by assessing the physical activity, complications, and the educational and occupational status of 69 patients (32 males and 37 females, average age 18 +/- 2 years) who had graduated from junior high school by April 1993. Group A consisted of 54 patients with mild CHD (small left-to-right shunt disease, mild aortic stenosis and/or regurgitation, and other CHD) who reported to have no symptoms. Group B consisted of 15 patients who complained of restrictions o

AIMS: (1) To evaluate an active method of surveillance of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). (2) To compare different criteria for deciding whether or not a work situation could be considered at high risk of MSDs in a large, modern shoe factory.
METHODS: A total of 253 blue collar workers were interviewed and examined by the same physician in 1996; 191 of them were re-examined in 1997. Risk factors of MSDs were assessed for each worker by standardised job site work analysis. Prevalence and incidence rates of carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff syndrome, and tension neck syndrome were calculat

INTRODUCTION: Workplace violence is a social problem yet to be solved. Although it is present in virtually all work environments, its prevalence in healthcare settings stands out, being perceived as something inherent to the job. Most studies in this context have focused on user violence against professionals. However, it has been observed that violence among colleagues in these types of jobs is a risk factor for the health of workers and has rarely been studied as a whole. Among the main consequences of exposure to violence reported in the literature, burnout syndrome, depression, anxiety, or

A novel heterozygous missense variant in STAT3 (NM_139276.3: c.1250G > C, NP_644805.1: p.(Arg417Thr) was identified in a Danish family spanning five generations with diverse phenotypes consistent with autosomal dominant STAT3-Hyper-IgE-Syndrome (STAT3-HIES). Genetic analysis confirmed the absence of the variant in population databases, and computational predictions of pathogenicity were conflicting. Functional assessment revealed that the variant STAT3 Arg417Thr maintained normal DNA binding but exhibited reduced IL-6-induced transcriptional activity and no negative-dominance. Further, signifi

Introduction: Hyper-IgE Syndrome (HIES) is a rare inborn error of immunity (IEI) characterized by a constellation of symptoms related to susceptibility to Staphylococcal skin and pulmonary infections, eczema, raised serum IgE (>2,000 IU/ml), craniofacial anomalies, and recurrent bone fractures. Data on HIES from the Indian subcontinent is scarce and restricted to small case series and case reports. This is the first compilation of national data on HIES. Materials and Methods: A total 103 cases clinically diagnosed and treated as HIES were analyzed from nine centers. Cases with clinical and/or
