PURPOSE: In Western medical centers, emphasis has been placed on simultaneous myelomeningocele closure and ventriculoperitoneal shunting for children with spina bifida (SB) and co-morbid hydrocephalus (HC). This is not practical in developing countries where patients present in a delayed fashion, many with open, dirty myelomeningoceles. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether timing of shunting in relation to myelomeningocele closure affected shunt-related complications such as SB wound infection, shunt infection, and shunt malfunction.

A large Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak occurred in Kenya from December 2006 to March 2007. We conducted a study to define risk factors associated with infection and severe disease. A total of 861 individuals from 424 households were enrolled. Two hundred and two participants (23%) had serologic evidence of acute RVF infection. The results of a four month descriptive study on low Birth weight (LBW) deliveries in Nyanza Provincial General Hospital, Kisumu from 15th March to 30th July 1987 are presented. The incidence of LBW was 15.0%. Premature labour accounted for 55.3% while term small for gestational age contributes 44.7% of all LBW babies. 4.8% of the mothers of LBW babies were teenagers. The mean gravidity of the mother's was 2.5 with 46.8% being primigravidae. Antibody responses (IgG) against Taenia hydatigena infection in dogs in Kenya were analysed in ELISA using excretory/secretory products of T. hydatigena scoleces derived from goat cysticercus cysts. Helminth infections of individual dogs were confirmed at autopsy. Schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni has not been reported in Baringo District of Rift Valley Province. The intermediate host (Biomphalaria species) though has been reported to occur along the shores of the lakes in this region. Several wild olive baboons from a single troop in the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya were observed to be lethargic and emaciated. Five were trapped and tuberculin tested by intradermal inoculation of 0.1 cc (100 IU) mammalian old tuberculin in the upper eyelid. Two of the five showed positive reaction at 72 hr and were examined at necropsy.
