Dexamethasone-Eluting Contact Lens for the Prevention of Postphotorefractive Keratectomy Scar in a New Zealand White Rabbit Model.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of an experimental dexamethasone-eluting contact lens (DCL) for the prevention of postphotorefractive keratectomy (PRK) corneal haze in a New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit model. METHODS: Both eyes of 29 NZW rabbits underwent PRK. The rabbits were randomized to one of the 5 study arms for 4 weeks: tarsorrhaphy only, tarsorrhaphy and bandage contact lens (BCL) replaced weekly, tarsorrhaphy and BCL for 1 week plus topical 0.1% dexamethasone ophthalmic solution (drops) for 4 weeks, tarsorrhaphy and BCL replaced weekly plus topical dexamethasone for 4 wee…

Visual Outcomes of Conductive Keratoplasty to Treat Hyperopia and Astigmatism After Laser in situ Keratomileusis and Photorefractive Keratectomy.

AIM: To determine the effect of conductive keratoplasty (CK) for the treatment of induced hyperopia and astigmatism after complicated myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this interventional case series, 11 eyes of seven subjects with a history of previous LASIK or PRK with inadequate stromal bed or flaps complications were enrolled. Inclusion criteria included residual spherical hyperopia of 1.00 to 3.00 diopters (D) and cylinder of -0.75 to -3.00 D. The modified Refractec nomogram and the LightTouch technique of CK were …

Phototherapeutic keratectomy for the treatment of nodular subepithelial corneal scars in patients with keratoconus who are contact lens intolerant.

The management of keratoconus with contact lenses may be complicated by punctate epithelial keratopathy, epithelial breakdown, and nodular, raised subepithelial scars. We report four consecutive cases of contact lens intolerance due to pain in patients with keratoconus and raised, nodular scars. Excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) was used to treat all patients. Follow-up ranged from 7 to 14 months (mean: 10 months). All patients resumed rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens wear 2 to 4 weeks after surgery. Visual acuities ranged from 20/40 to 20/70 before surgery and improved to…

Characteristics influencing visual outcomes of corneal topography-guided excimer laser keratectomy combined with corneal cross-linking for keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To identify preoperative predictive factors for visual outcomes of corneal topography-guided excimer laser keratectomy (TG-PRK) combined with corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in keratoconic eyes, and to explore potential thresholds of these factors for optimizing patient selection. METHODS: Keratoconic patients who underwent CXL combined with TG-PRK were enrolled and divided into the on-target group and off-target group based on the difference between the best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) at the last postoperative follow-up and the preoperative BSCVA. Preoperative pa…

Fourier analysis of corneal irregular astigmatism after small-incision lenticule extraction and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy: A comparative study.

To compare changes in the spherical component, regular astigmatism, and irregular astigmatism of the anterior surface of the cornea after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK). Fifty-six patients underwent SMILE in 56 eyes, and 68 patients underwet TransPRK in 68 eyes. The right eye was chosen to enter the group. Six months after the procedure, Scheimpflug images were acquired, and Fourier analysis of the anterior surface of patients' corneas was performed using the Pentacam built-in software. Fourier parameters encompass various…

Combined photorefractive keratectomy and corneal collagen cross-linking for treatment of keratoconus: a 2-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is considered an effective procedure for slowing down or eliminating the progression of keratoconus. New techniques, in combination with CXL, have been proposed to stop the evolution of keratoconus and improve the visual function. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of combined photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with mitomycin-C (MMC) application and CXL in the management of grade 1-2 keratoconus over a 2-year follow-up. METHODS: Fifteen eyes underwent topography-guided PRK with 0.02% MMC application immediately followed by standard CXL. …

Effect of the Optical Zone Ablation Diameter on Higher Order Aberrations After Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy: A Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of the optical zone diameter of ablation on higher order aberrations after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy for myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: In this historical cohort study in 2019, patients were grouped into 7-mm (Gr-1) and 6.5-mm optical zones of ablation (Gr-2). Topographic and higher order aberrations at analysis diameters of 2, 4, and 6 mm were measured before and six months after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy. The changes in the five types of higher order aberrations in the 6.5 mm and 7 mm groups were compared. The pupi…

PURPOSE: To report a case of excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy retreatment of anterior basement membrane (ABM) dystrophy and Salzmann's nodular degeneration with a single intraoperative application of topical mitomycin C (0.02%). METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 91-year-old woman underwent excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in the left eye for ABM dystrophy and Salzmann's nodular degeneration causing decreased visual acuity (VA), ocular irritation, and recurrent erosions. Effects of amniotic membrane on epithelial wound healing and stromal remodelling after excimer laser keratectomy in rabbit cornea.

AIMS: To investigate if the amniotic membrane (AM) promotes epithelial migration while inhibiting stromal remodelling associated with corneal haze after excimer laser keratectomy. METHODS: A wound 150 microm in depth and 6.0 mm in diameter was produced in 40 rabbits using an excimer laser. One eye was randomly chosen to be covered by the AM while the other eye served as a control. Epithelial wound healing was evaluated, together with any morphological changes of the anterior stroma connected with corneal haze. These morphological changes were histopathologically analysed using dichlortriaziny…

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the comparative efficacy and safety of common pharmacological strategies for managing post-photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) eye pain through a network meta-analysis, providing evidence-based guidance for clinical medication. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were systematically retrieved from Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, and EMbase (from inception to November 15, 2025).
