In developing countries tuberculous meningitis is a difficult infection to differentiate from other central nervous system (CNS) infections. This paper presents the history, physical findings, laboratory data, and clinical course of 100 patients who were admitted to a special ward and had CSF cultures positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Fifty-four patients were comatose when admitted and 76 had meningeal signs. Mean admission CSF values were WBC 531, glucose 23 mg/dl, and protein 166 mg/dl. Only two CSF AFB smears were positive. GM1 Gangliosidosis is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder due to deficiency of the lysosome enzyme beta-galactosidase, with consequent tissue accumulation of glycolipids, oligosaccharides, and especially GM1 ganglioside. This is a retrospective review of 233 patients who had surgical exploration for proven or suspected malignant lesions of the exocrine pancreas and periampullary structures. There were 24 patients with carcinoma of the ampulla or duodenum, 12 with carcinoma of the bile duct, and 197 with lesions of the pancreas. The relation between the quantified French-American-British cooperative study (FAB) classification and presenting features was studied in 123 adult patients (greater than or equal to 15 years) with acute myeloid leukemia. Myeloblastic leukemia with maturation (M2) patients with a high maturation index (M2a) were older, compared to the other myeloblastic subgroups, while promyelocytic leukemia (M3) patients were younger than those with M2 or M2a. Differences between various leukemia types were found in the occurrence of a preceding myelodysplastic syndrome, leukocyte count, and platelet count.

Ofloxacin (OFLX), a new pyridonecarboxylic acid derivative for oral use, was administered in the treatment of 22 cases of bacterial prostatitis (acute 4, chronic 18). In advance of the clinical trial, the concentration of OFLX in prostatic fluid (PF) was determined following administration of the drug to 3 patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis at a stationary phase. Laboratory and clinical studies were performed as follows on ceftizoxime (CZX), a new cephalosporin antibiotic. 1. Susceptibility of clinically isolated bacteria to CZX and cefotiam (CTM) or sulbenicillin (SBPC). Antibacterial activities of CZX and CTM were compared against S. aureus, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, E. cloacae, H. influenzae and E. aerogenes; CZX was compared with SBPC against Ps. aeruginosa. The authors have carried out laboratory and clinical studies of 9,3"-diacetylmidecamycin (MOM) and obtained the following results. 1. Absorption and excretion of MOM. MOM was administered orally to 4 patients at a dose of 10 mg/kg in the fasting condition. The peak of serum levels was found at 30 minutes after administration. The mean values were 1.3 +/- 0.5 microgram/ml, and 1.1 +/- 0.9 microgram/ml after 30 minutes and 1 hour respectively. The serum levels were detectable in 2 cases after 2 hours (1.0 and 0.78 microgram/ml), in 1 case after 4 hours (0.78 microgram/ml) and were not detectable

In 1979, British laboratories participating in the American of Clinical Pathologists' survey reported five cases of tuberculosis, four of chickenpox, four of salmonellosis or shigellosis, one malaria, and one hepatitis A infection. Experimental and clinical studies on cefoperazone (CPZ), a new synthetic cephalosporin, were performed in the field of pediatrics. 1) The MICs of CPZ against 26 strains of S. aureus, 21 strains of E. coli, 20 strains of K. pneumoniae and 15 strains of H. influenzae which were clinically isolated were estimated and compared with those of CEZ and ABPC. A case of boomslang (Dispholidus typus) envenomation is reported. Coagulation studies carried out within 2 hours of the patient's being bitten showed unrecordable prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times. The fibrinogen and factors V and VIII were severely depleted. Abnormal liver function tests were also documented. These abnormalities were corrected by treatment with specific antivenom. A haemolytic-uraemic syndrome was not observed.

The effect of chronic cyanide exposure in the electroplating sections of three factories employing 36 workers was studied and compared with a control group. The concentration of cyanides to which the workers were exposed was measured. The regression line showing the relationship between thiocyanates in urine and the concentration of cyanides in the air was plotted.
