[Ecoparasitoses and public health in Brazil: challenges for control].

Parasitic skin diseases such as scabies, pediculosis, tungiasis, and cutaneous larva migrans are hyperendemic in the numerous poor communities in Brazil and are commonly associated with considerable morbidity. However, programs to control ectoparasites are non-existent in the country's public health system. Due to neglect of these diseases by the population itself and health care professionals, the diseases' highly contagious characteristics, and lack of effective treatment and/or presence of animal reservoirs together with a complex life cycle, effective control of ectoparasites is an enormou…

[Intestinal helminths in Bangkok stray dogs and their role in public health (author's tranls)].

Feces examination of 107 stray dogs in Bangkok, Thailand, on intestinal helminths showed the following rates: hookworms 100%, Trichuris vulpis 54.2%, Toxocara canis 6.5%, Gnathostoma spinigerum 2.8%, Spirocerca lupi 17.8%, Diphyllobothrium mansoni 1.9%, and Opisthorchis viverrini 1.9%. Out of these species hockworms (especially A. braziliense), T. canis, G. spinigerum, and D. mansoni are important sources of human cutaneous or visceral larva migrans, the latter two being special parasites of the Far East. Also O. viverrini is limited in its distribution to the Southeast Asian region; it is typ…

Mex. Same considerations are made regarding the biological cycle, its morphological characteristics and a review of the present state of the pathology, evolution and prognosis of the illness is made, focusing the attention to an immunological trend, as a close origin of the illness. Thus, it is concluded that an early re…

Myiasis Dermatobia hominis, Linn: report of a case and review of the literature.

A description of the life cycle of the tropical botfly, Dermatobia hominis, is presented. The entomology of this parasite is discussed along with the pathologic manifestations of human infestation and a description of the various modes of treatment. A recent case of multiple botfly infestation in a young man during a trip to Central America is reported. A review of the literature including the earliest reported case (1904) is presented, along with a brief discussion of the epidemiology and public health aspects of this problem.

In addition to national guidelines, European and international guidelines also exist. In 2014 and 2015 German guidelines on the following topics were newly developed or updated: cutaneous larva migrans, anticoagulation during dermatosurgery, pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoids, Mohs surgery, anal dysplasia, and anal carc…

[Diagnosis of human toxocarosis].

Human toxocarosis is an important parasitic zoonosis caused by larval stages of Toxocara species, the roundworms from dogs and cats. Larval migration through different soft tissues in the human generates several clinical entities in the patient, such as visceral larva migrans, ocular toxocarosis, and neurotoxocarosis. Definitive diagnosis by histopathological methods is very difficult or almost impossible and, nowadays, the diagnosis is usually made by clinical signs/symptoms, epidemiological background of the patient and the use of hematological and immunological tests which finally help to c…

Prevalence of Toxocara spp. eggs in the soil of public parks in Ankara, Turkey.

One hundred and seventy soil samples from forty-six public parks in Ankara area were examined to determine the level of contamination with Toxocara spp. eggs. 30.6% of the 170 soil samples were contaminated with Toxocara spp. eggs. The number of eggs in the positive soil samples varied from 1 to 10. A high proportion of the eggs was fully embryonated. The findings demonstrate the common occurrence of these eggs in locations likely to be important in the transmission of visceral larva migrans. Of 19 fecal collected, 5 (26.3%) contained Toxocara spp. eggs. Eggs of Ancylostomidae, Toxascaris leon…

Toxocariasis--an unlikely cause of Palm Island mystery disease.

After the suggestion was made that the "Palm Island mystery disease" might have been an epidemic of visceral larva migrans that was caused by the flying fox parasite, Toxocara pteropodis, work was undertaken to elucidate this nematode's life-cycle and pathogenicity. Studies of infections in various laboratory animals have shown unexpectedly variable susceptibility patterns, with mice harbouring most larvae for the longest time period. However, in all susceptible animals (which include mice, guinea-pigs and suckling rats), the larvae demonstrated marked hepatotropism. Experimental infections in…

Experimental infection of Mongolian gerbils with Baylisascaris potosis.

The present study evaluated the pathogenicity of Baylisascaris potosis, a newly described ascarid nematode, in Mongolian gerbils. Gerbils we … ts indicate that B. potosis larvae migrate through numerous organs and are associated with visceral larva migrans in gerbils, but less frequently migrate to the nervous system in gerbils than does B. transfuga .

[Lyme borreliosis in South Germany. Epidemiologic data on the incidence of cases and on the epidemiology of ticks (Ixodes ricinus) carrying Borrelia burgdorferi].

Among 2403 ticks (Ixodes ricinus) tested in 1985 for Borrelia 328 (13.6%) were carriers (adults about 20%, nymphs about 10%, larvae about 1%). The highest prevalence of infected ticks was among adult ticks in the Isar region north of Munich (33.8%). Among 9383 persons whose serum had been examined by fluorescence serology in 1985 and 1986, 1035 (11%) had raised Borrelia-specific IgG and/or IgM antibodies greater than or equal to 1:64. In 18.7% only IgM antibodies were demonstrated. Among 375 proven cases there were 78 with erythema migrans, 211 with neurological signs, 48 with Lyme arthritis a

Prevalence of Toxocara antibodies among patients clinically suspected to have ocular toxocariasis: A retrospective descriptive study in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis, caused by Toxocara canis, T. cati, and T. vitulorum of dogs, cats and ruminants respectively, is recognized as an important zoonotic infection worldwide. The typical clinical syndromes of toxocariasis in humans are ocular larva migrans (OLM) and visceral larva migrans (VLM). The most commonly affected sites of OLM are the peripheral retina and/or vitreous humor. In Sri Lanka, there is a dearth of information on prevalence of ocular infection in our population. Therefore, the present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Toxocara antibodies in susp…
