Deep-planes lift associated with free flap surgery for facial reanimation.

Between April 1999 and April 2008, 37 patients with long-standing facial paralysis underwent a one-stage facial reanimation with neuromuscular free flaps: 28 patients (group A) underwent flap transposition only; 9 patients (group B) underwent a deep-planes lift (DPL) composed of the superficial muscoloaponeurotic system + parotid fascia at the time of facial reanimation. The postoperative and final results were compared between groups A and B, following the classification of Terzis and Noah (1997). Before the onset of contraction, only group B patients (100%) showed good or moderate symmetry a

Autologous platelet concentrates for bone graft enhancement in sinus lift procedure.

BACKGROUND: Autologous platelet (PLT)-rich plasma has been reported in some studies to promote osteogenesis. The goal of this study was to demonstrate that osteogenesis gained by mixing autologous PLT concentrates (APCs) with a small quantity of autologous bone graft could give a sufficient quality to lead to dental implant placement. The second goal was to compare this osteogenesis with that obtained by a traditional method (iliac bone graft), through clinical, radiologic, and histologic methods. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Eighteen patients needing bilateral sinus floor augmentation were enro

The individualized component face lift: developing a systematic approach to facial rejuvenation.

BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative planning combined with facial fat compartment augmentation can improve precision and balance in facial rejuvenation techniques. Understanding the concept of "facial shaping" with respect to symmetry and soft-tissue (fat) distribution preoperatively is critical to optimizing aesthetic outcomes in various face lift techniques. METHODS: A review of 822 consecutive face lifts performed from January of 1994 to June of 2007 by a single surgeon (R.J.R.) was conducted. From this database, randomly selected cohorts of 50 preoperative and postoperative photographs were

Biodynamics model for operator head injury in stand-up lift trucks.

Biodynamics and injury potential of operators in stand-up rider lift truck accidents have been investigated with a special focus on head injury. An anthropomorphic test device (ATD) model was used as an operator surrogate in computer simulations of off-the-dock (OTD) and tip-over (TO) accidents. The biomechanical model representing the ATD was developed based on rigid body segments, and then combined with a rigid body truck model in the accident simulations. The operator compartment of the truck model was enclosed with a rear door. The computed kinematics are in agreement with the results of p

Prevalence and management of Schneiderian membrane perforations during sinus-lift procedures.

This clinical study was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence of surgical complications of the sinus graft procedure and to set a protocol to repair sinus membrane perforations intraoperatively using a variety of techniques and materials. From January 2000 to May 2005, 338 patients were studied, on whom 474 sinus floor augmentation procedures were performed, and a total of 1166 dental implants were simultaneously placed. A total of 104 perforations of the sinus membrane were observed (19 were bilateral). In group number 1, sinus membrane perforations of <5 mm were observed in 56 sinus augmenta

Circumauricular incision (water-drop shape) for mid- to lower face lift.

The conventional method of mid- to lower face rhytidectomy that involves removing a strip of occipital scalp always creates a conspicuous tr … th the galea in the upper part and beneath the occipital scalp and neck skin in the lower area. The lifting vector is upward and backward for the anterior skin flap and upward for the posterior skin flap. The excess skin is trimmed around the ear. The wound at the upper pole of the incision is closed in a V-to-Y advancement fashion. The dog-ear is left ab …

Regressionally determined vertebral inclination angles of the lumbar spine in static lifts.

OBJECTIVE: Our previous study has developed the non-invasive models to predict the vertebral inclination angles by relating the external sti … models were then developed to express the relationships between the vertebral inclinations and the lifting postures. RESULTS: The prediction models revealed that the lumbar posture (lordosis or kyphosis) had a statistically significant effect on these inclination angles. Non-linear first-order regression models of the torso angle and the pelvic angle we …

Combined frontal bone reshaping and forehead lift for frontal sinus hypertrophy.

A technique to correct frontal sinus hypertrophy is presented. The outer table of the frontal sinus is removed and divided into three pieces with an oscillation saw. The pieces are trimmed at the margin, fixed with two microplates, and regrafted. Bilateral lateral thick portions of the supraorbital rim are shaved with a surgical burr. At the same time, a forehead lift is performed. A satisfactory result with a flat and wide forehead can be obtained by employing this technique.

Hand-assisted laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with abdominal wall-lift method.

We performed a hand-assisted laparoscopic resection of the distal stomach for treatment of gastric cancer with use of an abdominal wall-lift method. The surgeon's left hand, which was inserted through a right lower quadrant incision, was extremely useful in accomplishing D2 lymph node dissection, application of a pursestring instrument, and approximation of a circular stapler to carry out a Billroth I anastomosis. Abdominal wall-lift enabled us to perform the gastrectomy without any concern about gas leakage. The combination of the wall-lift method and hand assistance seems to further enlarge

An abdominal wall-lift method of laparoscopic cholecystectomy without peritoneal insufflation.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is unusually performed with peritoneal insufflation of carbon dioxide gas, which limits the free use of conventional surgical techniques and is accompanied by operative risks resulting from trocar insertion, hypercapnia, and increased intraabdominal pressure. We have improved the laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure by using an abdominal wall-lift technique that does not utilize peritoneal insufflation. The operative field is almost the same as in the pneumoperitoneum method with the exception of morbidly obese patients. Because airtightness between manipulating

Predictors of durability of the prostatic urethral lift (PUL) for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to understand the predictors of prostatic urethral lift (PUL) durability to help physicians counsel patients and optimize outcomes. METHODS: A simple logistic regression analysis was performed on a pooled dataset of 331 subjects across 5 PUL controlled studies with up to 5 years follow up. Predictors of "surgical durability" (no surgical treatment for return of symptoms) and "total durability" (no surgical or medical treatment for return of symptoms) were assessed at 1- and 5-year post-procedure. RESULTS: Placing ≤4 implants regardless of baseline prostate volume

Correcting Sunken Eyelid by Orbital Fat Transposition During Subbrow Lift.

BACKGROUND: The subbrow approach is reportedly more effective than upper blepharoplasty for improving lateral hooding. Additionally, it allows for the removal of thick periorbital fat while simultaneously tightening weakened and sagging orbicularis oculi muscles. This study introduces a method for repositioning and redistributing the medial fat pad to the central area, restoring fullness in the central area, and improving medial upper eyelid bulging. METHODS: From January 2023 to June 2024, 74 patients were followed up preoperatively, and 1 week and 6 months postoperatively. The medial and ce
