Lip and Jaw Tremor in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized clinically by the presence of bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor. Although upper limb rest tremor is the most common form of tremor in PD, lip/jaw tremor is identified in a proportion of these patients. METHODS: We aimed to assess the frequency, features, and correlates of lip/jaw tremor in PD. RESULTS: We studied 229 consecutive patients with PD. There were 39 (17%) patients with lip/jaw tremor, 22 of them (56.4%) were males. Slight lip/jaw tremor was identified in n = 10 (25.6%), mild in n = 15 (38.5%), moderate in n = 13 (33.3%) and se…

Thalidomide as Treatment of Lip's Pyogenic Granuloma.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vascular tumor that can be challenging to treat, particularly in aesthetically sensitive areas. We report a case of a 32-year-old man with a PG on the upper lip that did not respond to conventional treatments, including glucocorticoid injections and long-pulse 1064 nm laser therapy. Due to aesthetic concerns and the lack of response to these treatments, the patient was administered oral thalidomide at a nightly dose of 75 mg for 5 months, which resulted in complete regression without recurrence over a 3-year follow-up. This case suggests thalidomide's potent…

Effect of Race on Lower Lip Hydration.

OBJECTIVE: To examine racial differences in lip hydration values- a retrospective analysis. METHODS: Baseline lip hydration data collected as Corneometer® CM 825 measurements were culled from sixteen clinical studies conducted under a standard protocol. Data for the three largest subject groups were compared by ANOVA. Possible weather and age effects were also examined. RESULTS: The groups ranked, in order of increasing lip hydration: Black < Caucasian < Hispanic. Two smaller groups not included in the ANOVA, Asian-American and Native-American, had baseline lip hydration values numerically c…

Distribution and Uniqueness in the Pattern of Lip Prints.

Introduction Lip prints are the characteristic pattern of wrinkles and grooves on the labial mucosa. Lip prints can be classified into various patterns and can be used for personal identification as they are unique and do not change during the life of a person. Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with the identification of humans based on lip traces. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the distribution of lip print patterns, to assess gender differences, and to calculate the lip score using a weighted value scoring system. Material and methods A cross-sectional …

The "4.3," A New Filler Lips Technique.

BACKGROUND: The "4.3" technique is a hybrid lip augmentation approach that combines the aesthetic benefits of the vertical-lip technique with the fewer entry points of the retrograde linear technique. This method aims to create natural-looking, harmonious, and defined lips using hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers, to enhance volume and contour. AIMS: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and reproducibility of the "4.3" technique in achieving natural lip augmentation with minimal filler volume and reduced injections. This technique is applied to improve the sha…

A Case of an Uncommon Lower Lip Swelling.

A woman in her fifty-seventh year appeared with a painless swelling on her left lower lip that had been present for three years. The size of the swelling was noticeably increasing in size over time. On examination, there was a lump that was firm, non-tender, and measured 2 cm x 1 cm above the lower lip. The oral cavity, as well as the intraoral mucosa, were normal and unremarkable in appearance. As fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed a spindle cell lesion, she had an excision biopsy performed, followed by bilateral advancement flap closure. Histopathological examination (HPE) revealed a s…

Breastfeeding Symptoms with Tongue- and Lip-Tie.

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to describe maternal and infant symptoms relative to tongue- and lip-tie severity and describe changes in symptoms and feeding efficiency from pre- to post-frenotomy. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A one-group pre- and post-intervention study design was used. Data from a dental practice were collected from medical records of infants less than 1 year old who underwent a frenotomy procedure for tongue- and/or lip-tie. Infant and maternal symptoms were compared with severity of tongue- and lip-tie using binary logistic regression. Wilcoxon Signed Rank test compare…

The Concept of Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair.

Surgical treatment of unilateral cleft lip is a difficult procedure, partly because many anatomical variants exist. The cleft lip has no excess tissue; hence, tissue from the cleft side cannot reach the normal side, even if all white lip tissue from the cleft side is preserved. Therefore, a basic concept is necessary to perform surgery according to a patient's anatomical diversity. Herein, we describe the essential concepts of unilateral cleft lip surgery. Specifically, the surgeon can insert the Millard's rotation advancement flap, Onizuka's small triangular flap, and Noordhoff's vermilion tr…

Revisiting the embryogenesis of lip and palate development.

Clefts of the lip and palate (CLP), the major causes of congenital facial malformation globally, result from failure of fusion of the facial processes during embryogenesis. With a prevalence of 1 in 500-2500 live births, CLP causes major morbidity throughout life as a result of problems with facial appearance, feeding, speaking, obstructive apnoea, hearing and social adjustment and requires complex, multi-disciplinary care at considerable cost to healthcare systems worldwide. Long-term outcomes for affected individuals include increased mortality compared with their unaffected siblings. The fr…

Actinomycosis of the Lower Lip: Report of a Case.

Actinomycosis is usually a chronic infectious disease caused by Actinomyces species, which are anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria that normally colonize the human oral cavity and digestive and urogenital tracts. Although this lesion often occurs on soft tissue around the mandible, cases localized in the lip are very uncommon. We encountered a patient with actinomycosis in the lower lip. A 76-year-old woman with a 5-mm submucosal nodule of the lower lip was referred to our hospital from a dental clinic. The clinical diagnosis was a benign submucosal tumor. Total excision and histological examinat…

A rare case of Hidradenoma of the lower lip.

Hidradenoma are rare benign tumors with eccrine or apocrine differentiation that most often presents as a small, firm, solitary dermal nodule. At times, hidradenoma shows striking cytologic and histologic similarity to other neoplasms, including its malignant counterpart, hidradenocarcinoma. We present the first reported case of benign hidradenoma of the lower lip. The case illustrates important diagnostic features of hidradenoma and discusses the current understanding of its malignant potential and the appropriate management of such lesions.

The Evolution of Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair.

The understanding of cleft lip etiology and approaches for surgical repair have evolved over time, allowing for improved ability to restore form and function. The variability of cleft lip presentations has necessitated a nuanced surgical approach with multidisciplinary cleft care. The earliest documentation of unilateral cleft lip repair predates the 19th century, with crude outcomes observed before the advent of curved incisions and advancement flaps. In the 20th century, straight line, quadrilateral flap, and triangular flap repairs were introduced to mitigate post-repair surgical scarring, …

Solitary congenital lip pit in an infant.

Lower lip pits are infrequent, affecting fewer than 1 in 75 000 individuals. While more frequently associated with inherited syndromes, isolated lower lip pits may present sporadically as a solitary congenital anomaly. We describe an otherwise healthy 9-day-old infant who presented with a congenital lower lip lesion with unremarkable family history and testing. The appropriate workup for a solitary congenital lip nodule, differential diagnosis, and management of lip pits is described.
