Changes in the amount and composition of pulmonary surfactant are important features of the adult respiratory distress syndrome. The goal of the present study was to investigate the effects of natural surfactant material and several of its lipid components on prostanoid production and superoxide generation by guinea pig alveolar macrophages. Lipids from the paracloacal glands of adult and of immature American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Acetate esters (C12-C18) were indicated in the adults' secretions. Immature alligators contain C10-C18 acetates, C12-C18 dodecanoates, tetradecanoates and other high molecular weight esters, and C10-C16 3-methyl-butanoates. Cholesterol, C16 and C18 free fatty acids, and α-tocopherol (vitamin E) were detected in some samples. The results are compared with those published for South American caiman species.

Relationships between biliary bilirubin and lipid secretions were studied in patients with chronic cholestatic liver disease, mainly primary biliary cirrhosis. The bilirubin secretion rate in the patients was not significantly different from that in the controls. However, the bilirubin output per phospholipids, per bile acids, and per phospholipids plus bile acids was high, especially at low bile acid secretion rates. Rats have been fed diets containing either 0.8% brominated corn oil or 0.5% of the ethyl ester of 9,10-dibromostearate or 9,10,12,13-tetrabromostearate. The early appearance of cholesterol gallstones is very common in Chile. To elucidate the mechanisms involved in this phenomenon, the size of the bile acid pool and the secretion of biliary lipids were studied in two groups of young women with normal weights and radiologically functioning gallbladders: nine with cholesterol gallstones and 14 healthy volunteers. Analyses were made of the scalp and hair lipids of 67 test persons. These were the most important results: 1. Seborrhoea is caused on one hand by a high secretion performance of the sebaceous glands. A further cause is that a longer period of time passes before a constant lipid amount is established. 2.
