A close relationship between magnesium and cardiovascular function has been reported; however, the effect of magnesium deficiency on autonomic cardiovascular regulation has not been clarified. We investigated the effect of magnesium deficiency on the autonomic regulation of oscillations of the R-R interval, arterial blood pressure (BP), and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) by using the maximum entropy method in conscious rats. Its effect on baroreflex control of RSNA and heart rate were also investigated with a logistic function curve. Mean BP in magnesium-deficient rats was higher than…

Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation in the human body and serves as an obligate cofactor in approximately 300 essential enzymatic cellular reactions. Magnesium is crucial for the generation and use of adenosine triphosphate and is required for oxidative phosphorylation. A wide variety of internal and external stresses have been found to increase a person's requirement for dietary magnesium. Magnesium deficiency may develop during a variety of pathological states, or it may have an iatrogenic basis. Magnesium deficiency complicates the management of hypertension and cardi…

Quinolone-induced arthropathy is probably caused by a lack of functionally available magnesium in immature joint cartilage. We used an in vitro assay to study the effects of fluoroquinolones on cartilage formation in mouse limb buds from 12-day-old mouse embryos in regular and in magnesium-deficient medium. Omission of magnesium from the medium had no adverse effect on the outcome of the culture: limb buds grew and differentiated well in regular and in magnesium-deficient Bigger's medium. Lack of calcium, however, severely impaired the development of the explants; this result was even more enh

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA1996eng
Osteoporosis and magnesium (Mg) deficiency often occur in malabsorption syndromes such as gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE). Mg deficiency is known to impair parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion and action in humans and will result in osteopenia and increased skeletal fragility in animal models. We hypothesize that Mg depletion may contribute to the osteoporosis associated with malabsorption. It was our objective to determine Mg status and bone mass in GSE patients who were clinically asymptomatic and on a stable gluten-free diet, as well as their response to Mg therapy. Twenty-three patients

The effect of thalidomide on circulating cytokines and myocardial lesion formation was investigated in Mg-deficient rats. After two weeks on a Mg-deficient diet, rats show an increase in circulating levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin 1. Thalidomide (1 mg/day) caused a complete inhibition of the increase in circulating tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels, without having an effect on interleukin 1. However, a marked increase in cardiomyopathic lesion formation was observed in Mg-deficient animals treated with thalidomide; possible mechanisms for thalidomide's enhancement of myo

Twenty seven patients with parasomnias (night terrors, nocturnal motor automatisms, nocturnal verbal automatisms and sometimes with bruxisms) associated with magnesium deficiency were selected. In all of them marked hypomagnesemia, clinical, EEG and EMG signs of spasmophilic syndromes were found. The 8 hours polysomnographical recordings of all cases (monitored in a system with infra-red video-TV cameras) showed severe sleep disorders and EEG nocturnal abnormalities occurring in the SWS (especially in the I b, II and III stages) with disappearance in the REM sleep. The authors suggest that the…

To study whether magnesium (Mg) deficiency is present in patients with variant angina, 24-hour Mg retention of low dose Mg (0.2 mEq/kg lean body weight) administered intravenously over 4 hours in 20 patients with variant angina was examined. No patient had received calcium antagonists before or during the study. All had attacks of chest pain associated with ST elevation on electrocardiograms. Twenty-one subjects without ischemic heart disease were studied as control subjects. Ten patients with variant angina were restudied 10 to 529 days (mean 235 +/- 30) after the treatment with calcium antag

The effects of magnesium deficiency on tissue levels of total lipids and fatty acids were evaluated. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a magnesium-deficient diet for 14 wk with controls being pair-fed to the deficient rats. Compared to the controls, serum and 24-h urinary magnesium levels were markedly lower in the magnesium-deficient rats. Serum cholesterol and total phospholipids were significantly higher in the magnesium-deficient rats than in the controls. Edema and polycystic degeneration of the kidneys were present in the magnesium-deficient rats. Kidney total phospholipids and triacylglycero…

The effect of magnesium deficiency on vitamin D metabolism was assessed in 23 hypocalcemic magnesium-deficient patients by measuring the serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2D] before, during, and after 5-13 days of parenteral magnesium therapy. Magnesium therapy raised mean basal serum magnesium [1.0 +/- 0.1 (mean +/- SEM) mg/dl] and calcium levels (7.2 +/- 0.2 mg/dl) into the normal range (2.2 +/- 0.1 and 9.3 +/- 0.1 mg/dl, respectively; P less than 0.001). The mean serum 25OHD concentration was in the low normal range (13.2 +/- 1.5 ng/ml…

Diets containing 150 or 600 ppm magnesium with or without 200 ppm lead were fed to rats throughout gestation and lactation to determine the influence of moderate magnesium deficiency on tissue lead content of maternal and offspring tissue. During lactation it was necessary to increase the lowest dietary magnesium level to 225 ppm. Lead caused a significant depression in both gestational weight gain and average pup weight regardless of the level of dietary magnesium. Maternal magnesium deficiency was evidenced by significant reductions in serum and tibia magnesium, a 17-fold increase in kidney …

Magnesium (Mg) plays important roles in maintaining genomic stability and cellular redox. Mg also serves as nature's physiological calcium (Ca) channel antagonist, controlling intracellular Ca entry. Because Ca is the most important second messenger, its intracellular concentration is tightly regulated. Excess intracellular Ca can activate aberrant signaling pathways leading to the acquisition of pathological characteristics and cell injury. Several epidemiological studies have linked Mg deficiency (MgD) and increased Ca:Mg ratios with higher incidences of colon cancer and increased mortality.

Dietary magnesium (Mg) deficiency is more prevalent than generally suspected and can cause cardiovascular lesions leading to disease at all stages of life. The average American diet is deficient in Mg, especially in the young, in alcoholic persons, and in those under stress or with diseases or receiving certain drug therapies, who have increased Mg needs. Otherwise normal, Mg-deficient diets cause arterial and myocardial lesions in all animals studied, and diets that are atherogenic, thrombogenic and cardiovasopathic, as well as Mg-deficient, intensify the cardiovascular lesions, whereas Mg su

BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg) is an essential element for the body. It is a cofactor for ATP, DNA, and RNA and more than 600 enzymes. As it is similar to Ca2+, this element can also act as a cell signaling molecule and play multiple important roles in the nervous, muscle, and immune systems. Recent studies have associated Mg-deficiency with many neurological disorders, such as cerebral vasospasm, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and migraine. As it plays such a crucial role in human body, therefore, we summarized the role of Mg in neurological disorders to illustrate the symptoms caused by Mg-deficie

Deficiency of magnesium and vitamin 6 is a modifiable risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). A combined deficiency of magnesium and vitamin 6 disrupts the functioning myocardial tissue due to the formation of endothelial dysfunction, prothrombotic changes in blood viscosity characteristics, improve vascular tone, failure of the mitochondria. Receiving organic magnesium salts in combination with adequate doses of pyridoxine can be effective in the prevention and treatment of CHD.
