Stable and sensitive sensor for alkaline phosphatase based on target-triggered wavelength tuning of fluorescent copper nanoclusters.

Generally, the volatility and vulnerability of intensity signal largely reduced the reproducibility and stability of fluorescent nanosensor. Herein, we proposed a novel and stable fluorescent sensor by employing the wavelength shift of copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) as signal readout. The thymine-templated CuNCs were prepared by facile and rapid one-pot reduction method. Interestingly and importantly, it was found that the fluorescence wavelength of CuNCs could be precisely tuned by manganese ion (Mn2+). Through systematic investigation, it was further proved that the wavelength readout of CuNCs

The pH-dependent role of different manganese oxides in the fate of arsenic during microbial reduction of arsenate-bearing goethite.

Manganese oxides reduce arsenic (As) toxicity by promoting aqueous-phase As(III) oxidation and immobilization in natural aquatic ecosystems. In anaerobic water-sediment systems, arsenic exists both in a free state in the liquid phase and in an adsorbed state on iron (Fe) minerals. However, the influence of different manganese oxides on the fate of As in this system remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we constructed an anaerobic microbial As(V) reduction environment and investigated the effects of three different manganese oxides on the fate of both aqueous-phase and goethite-adsorbed As

Enhanced reduction of Cd uptake by wheat plants using iron and manganese oxides combined with citrate in Cd-contaminated weakly alkaline arable soils.

Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) oxides can be used to remediate Cd-polluted soils due to their excellent performance in heavy metal adsorption. However, their remediation capability is rather limited, and a higher content of available Mn and Fe in soils can reduce Cd accumulation in wheat plants due to the competitive absorption effect. In this study, goethite and cryptomelane were first respectively used to immobilize Cd in Cd-polluted weakly alkaline soils, and sodium citrate was then added to increase the content of available Mn and Fe content for further reduction of wheat Cd absorption. In t

Role of indigenous microorganisms and organics in the release of iron and trace elements from sediments impacted by iron mine tailings from failed Fundão dam.

After Fundão Dam failure in 2015, most of Gualaxo do Norte River in Doce River Basin in Brazil became silted by iron mining tailings consisting mainly of fine-grained quartz, hematite, and goethite. Previous work pointed to the possibility of reductive dissolution of iron and manganese from tailings, leading to mobilization of iron, manganese and trace elements. Several microorganisms were shown to reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II) and Mn(III, IV) to Mn(II) "in vitro", but their roles in mobilization of Fe and trace elements from freshwater sediments are poorly understood. In this work, bottom sediment

Enantioselective cyanosilylation of ketones catalyzed by recyclable polymeric and dimeric Mn(III) salen complexes at room temperature.

Recyclable polymeric 1 and dimeric 2 chiral Mn(III) salen complexes catalyzed enantioselective cyanosilylation of various ketones in the presence of triphenylphosphine oxide as an additive proceeded smoothly at room temperature, providing excellent yields (up to 98%) and enantiomeric excess (up to 86%) of respective cyanohydrin trimethylsilyl ether. For most of the substrates, the Catalyst 1 showed slightly better reactivity and enantioselecitivity than the Catalyst 2 nevertheless both the catalysts were easily recovered and reused four times with the retention of their efficiency.

Exchange interactions and zero-field splittings in C3-symmetric Mn(III)6Fe(III): using molecular recognition for the construction of a series of high spin complexes based on the triplesalen ligand.

The reaction of the tris(tetradentate) triplesalen ligand H6talen(t-Bu2), which provides three salen-like coordination environments bridged in a meta-phenylene arrangement by a phloroglucinol backbone, with Mn(II) salts under aerobic conditions affords, in situ, the trinuclear Mn(III) triplesalen complexes [(talen(t-Bu2)){Mn(III)(solv)n}3]3+. These can be used as molecular building blocks in the reaction with [Fe(CN)6]3- as a hexaconnector to form the heptanuclear complex [{(talen(t-Bu2)){Mn(III)(solv)n}3}2{Fe(III)(CN)6}]3+ ([Mn(III)6Fe(III)]3+). The reaction of MnBr(2) and [PPN](2)[S,S-C(6)H(3)-R] (1:2 molar ratio) in THF yielded [(THF)Mn(S,S-C(6)H(3)-R)(2)](-) [R = H (1a), Me (1b); THF = tetrahydrofuran]. Formation of the dimeric [Mn(S,S-C(6)H(3)-R)(2)](2)(2-) [R = H (2a), Me (2b)] was presumed to compensate for the electron-deficient Mn(III) core via two thiolate bridges upon dissolution of complexes 1a and 1b in CH(2)Cl(2). Complex 2a displays antiferromagnetic coupling interaction between two Mn(III) centers (J = -52 cm(-1)), with the effective magnetic moment (mu(eff)) increasing from 0.85 mu(B) at 2.0 K to 4.86 mu(B) at 300 K. Abortiporus biennis tolerance to insoluble metal oxides: oxalate secretion, oxalate oxidase activity, and mycelial morphology.

The ability of Abortiporus biennis to tolerate and solubilize toxic metal oxides (Cu(2)O, Al(2)O(3), ZnO, CuFe(2)O(4)Zn, CdO, and MnO(2)) incorporated into agar media was investigated and the growth rate, oxalic acid secretion, and mycelial morphology were monitored. Among the tested metal oxides, formation of clear zones underneath the mycelium growing on Cu(2)O- and ZnO-amended plates was observed. ZnO, CdO and Cu(2)O caused the highest rate of fungal growth inhibition. An increased level of oxalic acid concentration was detected as a response of A. biennis to the presence of Cu(2)O, MnO(2),

Metals in dust fractions emitted at mechanical workstations.

Workers at metal machining workstations are exposed to airborne dust particles containing metals and their compounds. Their harmful impact on the workers' health depends on both their chemical composition and their distribution. The aim of this study was to determine the content of metals in dust fractions emitted in the process of mechanical machining of products made of brass, steel and cast iron. Samples taken during grinding, turning and drilling were tested. The concentration of metals in dust fractions was determined with atomic absorption spectrometry. The content of iron, manganese, ch

Accumulation of phenol derivatives and microplastic in ferromanganese nodules (Fe-Mn) from Polish Exclusive Economic Zone - preliminary studies.

Polymetallic iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) nodules from the Baltic Sea are increasingly seen as a valuable source of rare earth elements (REE) and technology-critical elements (TCE). However, no prior studies have examined their potential to accumulate toxic organic pollutants, which may affect REE recovery processes. Here, we report the first detection of endocrine-disrupting phenol derivatives: bisphenol A, 4-nonylphenol, and 4-tert-octylphenol as well as microplastic particles in Fe-Mn nodules from the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone. Phenol derivatives concentrations were 5-151 times higher in nod

Synthesis of a Zn-MOF fluorescent material for sensitive detection of biothiols via an inner filter effect with MnO2 nanosheets.

In this study, zinc ions were employed as the central metal, while 4,4',4''-nitrilotribenzoic acid (H3NTB) served as the fluorescent organic ligand. Through a single-step solvothermal approach, a novel Zn-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) fluorescent material was successfully synthesized. The Zn-MOFs exhibit a cubic morphology, outstanding fluorescence properties, excellent water dispersibility, and robust resistance to high temperature and strong alkaline conditions. Additionally, MnO2 nanosheets (NSs) were effectively exfoliated from MnO2 particles using ultrasonic treatment. These MnO2

Engineering of 3D graphene hydrogel-supported MnO2-FeOOH nanoparticles with synergistic effect of oxidation and adsorption toward highly efficient removal of arsenic.

Iron-manganese-based adsorbent has been regarded as a promising candidate for arsenic purification from water, especially the inorganic As(III), due to its inherent advantage of low cost and large-scale producibility. However, the nanoparticle aggregation, metal leaching and insufficient removal efficiency remain the main challenges in the practical applications of the granular adsorbents. In this work, we develop a universal strategy for the fabrication of an active Fe(III) oxyhydroxide-Mn(IV) oxide/3D graphene oxide (GO) gel composite via a simple hydrothermal reaction. The role of bentonite clay and bentonite clay@MnFe2O4 composite and their physico-chemical properties on the removal of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from aqueous media.

In this investigation, bentonite clay (BC) and bentonite clay@MnFe2O4 composite (BCMFC) were applied as efficient adsorbents for adsorbing Cr(III) and Cr(VI) ions from aqueous media. Different analyses such as FTIR, SEM, EDX, Map, BET, and XRD were used to characterize the adsorbents. The results showed that the removal efficiency of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) using BC were found to be 95.21 and 95.74%, while the corresponding values to the BCMFC were 97.37 and 98.65%, respectively. Also, the equilibrium and kinetic studies showed that the Freundlich isotherm model and the quasi-second-order kinetic m

Potential of amino-riched nano-structured MnFe2O4@cellulose for biosorption of toxic Cr (VI): Modeling, kinetic, equilibrium and comparing studies.

In this work, amine riched MnFe2O4-cellulose was employed to remove toxic Cr (VI). To find out the optimum conditions R (3.3.1) software was used. The results of Cr (VI) adsorption onto three-step adsorbents were compared by interpreting kinetic and isotherm studies. The kinetic studies reveal that the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto cellulose and magnetic cellulose (MC) followed pseudo-first order model whereas the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto amine modified cellulose (AFMC) followed pseudo-second order kinetic model. From the obtained intraparticle diffusion model results it is evident that the ads

D-band broadening drives pollutant oxidative polymerization for intermediate-free water purification.

Oxidative polymerization driven by direct electron transfer (DET) demonstrates superior selectivity and strong anti-interference capability in water purification. However, its practical application is constrained by inherent limitations, including inadequate polymerization efficiency and extent, as well as catalytic site deactivation. To address these challenges, we propose a catalytic pathway engineering strategy through D-band broadening. Building upon this principle, a cobalt-manganese oxide-modified graphite felt (Co‑MnO2@GF) catalyst was developed and integrated into a dual-chamber reacti

Inhibition study of ZnMn2O4 with oxidase activity via Jahn-Teller effect for fast colorimetric sensing of uric acid.

ZnMn2O4 nanomaterial has outstanding advantages of environmental friendliness, low cost and ultra-high catalytic efficiency, and has become a potential candidate in the field of colorimetric detection. Herein, ZnMn2O4 nanoflowers with fluffy structure were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. It was found that the excellent oxidase (OXD) activity of ZnMn2O4 nanoflowers is not only attributed to the bimetallic synergistic effect between Zn and Mn, but also dominated by the Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn3+ with the t₂g3eg1 electronic configuration, which fills the gap in the struct

Innovative dual-oxidase nanozyme sensor array for rapid detection of tetracyclines in animal-derived foods.

Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs), a class of broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, are frequently detected as residues in animal-derived foods, posing a significant food safety risk. Long-term intake of TC residues can induce antimicrobial resistance, trigger allergic reactions, and cause direct toxicity, compromising human health. Conventional detection methods face challenges in analyzing complex TC contaminants in food, necessitating a high-throughput strategy for their differentiation and detection. Herein, a MnO₂/ZnNC nanozyme colorimetric sensor array with dual-oxidase activity was construc

Different Ferromanganese Concretion Morphologies Host Distinct Microbial Communities and Metal Accumulation Patterns in the Baltic Sea.

Ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) concretions are porous accumulations of iron and manganese (hydr)oxides. While recent studies suggest that microbes contribute to metal accumulation in Baltic Sea concretions, the detailed composition of microbial communities and their impact on metal enrichment across different concretion morphotypes remain unexplored. We investigated how microbes influence the accumulation and release of trace metals and rare-earth elements in Fe-Mn concretions from the Gulf of Finland through 15-week microcosm incubation experiments with biotic and abiotic treatments, focusing on thre
