Giant Complex Odontoma Occurring Independently Within the Maxillary Sinus.

Previous reports on complex odontomas in the maxillary sinus describe cases that are associated with the alveolar process and extend into the maxillary sinus. This report presents a rare case of giant complex odontoma in the maxillary sinus, arising entirely within the maxillary sinus and unassociated with the alveolar process. In this case, the lesion was surgically removed through Caldwell-Luc operation. under general anesthesia, and the bony window was closed with titanium mesh.

Cavernous Sinus Syndrome Caused by Noninvasive Fungal Maxillary Sinusitis.

It is rare that cavernous sinus complications are caused by maxillary sinus lesions because the locations of these lesions are some distant from each other. The authors describe an unusual presentation that the primary lesion was located in the maxillary sinus and triggered cavernous sinus syndrome and optic nerve symptoms. The most likely possibility was that the infection traveled retrograde along the vascular plexus. Removal of maxillary sinus lesions and establishment ventilation may achieve source control.

Asymptomatic pellet in the maxillary sinus: Medico-legal perspective.

Air guns used for plinking are weapons with a short range and low velocity. Because of their low velocity, the ammunition usually enters the body without causing any immediate life-threatening complications. Lead toxicity is a potential side effect of a pellet lodged in the body. However, there are cases where blood lead level was below the reference value even after decades of an air gun pellet remaining in the body. We report a case of 40-year-old man whose X-ray of the skull revealed a metallic foreign body that appeared to be an air gun pellet in the maxillary sinus. The patient recalled r…

An Unusual Maxillary Sinus Foreign Body: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Paranasal sinus foreign bodies are rarely encountered in otolaryngology practice. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 32-year-old man who presented to our Emergency Department with his left eye bleeding after a nail gun injury. The initial physical examination revealed the presence of a left eye ruptured globe, which led to left eye blindness. An urgent plain X-ray scan was done, in which the presence of a metallic object impacted in the left maxillary sinus was demonstrated. The patient was managed surgically by an external approach using the Caldwell-Luc procedure, with no intra-…

Maxillary Sinus Elevation Difficulty Score with Lateral Wall Technique.

Maxillary sinus augmentation is a procedure commonly performed in patients in need of posterior maxillary implants with limited vertical ridge height and sinus pneumatization. However, minimal information has been presented to evaluate the complexity of the sinus elevation procedure via a lateral window approach based on patient examination, including extraoral findings, anatomical factors, and the possible influence from the surgeon's experience. Therefore, this article presents a new scheme of maxillary sinus floor elevation difficulty score based on comprehensive patient- and surgical-relat…

Histomorphometric Analysis of Maxillary Sinus Grafts: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: This pilot study evaluated and compared the degree of new bone formation following maxillary sinus graft (MSG) using three different bone graft materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with an edentulous posterior maxilla (unilateral or bilateral) were included in this study and underwent a two-stage procedure. Each sinus was randomly assigned one of the three graft materials: anorganic bovine bone mineral (ABBM), anorganic equine bone mineral (AEBM), or mineralized cancellous bone allograft (MCBA). Bone core samples were obtained from the lateral wall of the grafted sites at least …

Bony Changes in a Unilateral Maxillary Sinus Fungal Ball.

OBJECTIVES: In the paranasal sinus fungal ball (SFB), changes that occur in the underlying bone have not been well described. Recently, bacterial coinfection has been reported in patients with paranasal SFB. We evaluated whether bone changes occur in patients with unilateral maxillary SFB, and also how bacteria in an SFB affect the bony wall of the sinus. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with a unilateral maxillary SFB undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery was conducted from July 2009 to December 2015. Preoperative computed tomography images of the patients were reviewed. Wall thickne

Clinical and biological analysis in graftless maxillary sinus lift.

Maxillary sinus lift for dental implant installation is a well-known and versatile technique; new techniques are presented based on the physiology of intrasinus bone repair. The aim of this review was to determine the status of graftless maxillary sinus lift and analyze its foundations and results. A search was conducted of the literature between 1995 and 2015 in the Medline, ScienceDirect, and SciELO databases using the keywords "maxillary sinus lift," "blood clot," "graftless maxillary sinus augmentation," and "dental implant placement." Ten articles were selected for our analysis of this te…

Pneumatization within a maxillary sinus graft: a case report.

Rehabilitation of edentulous posterior maxilla with implant-supported prostheses frequently presents a challenge to dentists. This is due to insufficient bone within the region, in addition to other limiting factors such as anatomical pneumatization of the maxillary sinus. Thus, grafting of the maxillary sinus is a common procedure used to counteract these problems. Regardless of the type of biomaterial used, the success of the procedure is dependent on the formation of high-quality bone. Therefore, vascularization is a key factor for successful grafting and for the long-term maintenance of th…

[Two rare case report of maxillary sinus foreign body].

The maxillary sinus is the largest paranasal sinuses. Foreign bodies of nosal sinus can caused by car accidents, firearm attacks, or iatrogeniccause. We reported two rare cases of foreign body of pulp needle and loach. The clinical manifestations might include facial numbness, facial paresthesia, swelling, nasal congestion, facial pain, eye discomfort, limited mouth opening and relapse and etc. Both CT scan and the medical history were helpful in diagnosis. Functional endoscopic surgery would be the first choice of treatment.

Maxillary sinus retention cysts protruding into the inferior meatus.

Although most of the maxillary sinus retention cysts are asymptomatic, a few of them increase in size and cause symptoms. However, they rarely erode bony walls nor protrude into the inferior meatus. I present 2 cases with maxillary sinus retention cysts protruding into the inferior meatus by making a large defect on the medial wall of the maxillary sinus.

Large, expansile odontogenic cyst with bilateral maxillary sinus involvement.

Residual cysts are common odontogenic lesions of the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. A case of an unusually large residual cyst that crosses the maxillary midline and occupies portions of the maxillary sinuses is being reported. Investigations included a panoramic radiograph, CT scan and a biopsy. The differential diagnoses were common odontogenic lesions, including cysts and benign tumors. The value of advanced imaging modalities is stressed when determining the presence and extent of lesions in complex structures such as the maxilla. The need to visualize the entire lesion beyond what may b…
