Bilateral ectopic third molar in the maxillary sinuses associated with dentigerous cyst: a case report.

A dentigerous cyst is an epithelial-lined odontogenic cyst formed by an accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the crown of an unerupted tooth. About 70% of dentigerous cysts occur in the mandible and 30% in the maxilla and the most involved teeth are maxillary canines and maxillary third molars. Dentigerous cysts often displace the related tooth into an ectopic position. In the maxilla, when the cyst expands into the sinus, it usually causes total or partial occupation of the sinus cavity and can extend to the nose. We report a rare case of a 24-year-old woman with bi

Comparison of 2D, 2.5D, and 3D segmentation networks for maxillary sinuses and lesions in CBCT images.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare the segmentation performances of the 2D, 2.5D, and 3D networks for maxillary sinuses (MSs) and lesions inside the maxillary sinus (MSL) with variations in sizes, shapes, and locations in cone beam CT (CBCT) images under the same constraint of memory capacity. METHODS: The 2D, 2.5D, and 3D networks were compared comprehensively for the segmentation of the MS and MSL in CBCT images under the same constraint of memory capacity. MSLs were obtained by subtracting the prediction of the air region of the maxillary sinus (MSA) from that of the MS.

The CBCT Retrospective Study on Underwood Septa and Their Related Factors in Maxillary Sinuses-A Proposal of Classification.

Introduction. The presence of bone septum in the maxillary sinus is one of the most common anatomical findings. So-called Underwood septa (US) are an atypical bone formation in the maxillary sinuses. Mostly they are quite easily found in CBCT studies and have major importance in sinus lift procedures in dental surgery. Furthermore, the shape, location, and size of the bony septa are important in each maxillary sinus surgery. Material and methods. A retrospective study of 120CBCT scans from the authors' own database was conducted. Results. Approximately 37.5% of each CBCT was associated with th

Prevalence of pathologic findings in the floor of the maxillary sinuses on cone beam computed tomography images.

This study evaluated pathologic findings in the floor of the maxillary sinuses on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. CBCT scans of 500 subjects, mainly taken for dental implant planning, were evaluated. The pathologic findings in the 1000 maxillary sinuses (left and right) were categorized into 4 classes: mucosal thickening, mucous retention pseudocyst, partial opacification, and total opacification. Pathologic alterations were equally found in both sinuses (48.2% of right maxillary sinuses and 48.4% of left maxillary sinuses). There was no statistically significant difference betwee

Radiological and clinical difficulties in the management of chronic maxillary sinusitis in β Thalassemic paediatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: Beta thalassemia is a blood dyscrasia that caused a marked expansion of active marrow spaces and extramedullary haematopoiesis … in the side and anterior wall. Beta-thalassemic patients have a relative risk of 2.87 to develop a maxillary sinusitis. DISCUSSION: In these patients there is an increased incidence of sinonasal infections due to the abnormal development of cranio facial skeleton. These bone alterations might confuse the physicians and lead to an increased rate of sinusitis diagnos …

A new Strategy to Improve Drug Delivery to the Maxillary Sinuses: The Frequency Sweep Acoustic Airflow.

PURPOSE: Enhancement of intranasal sinus deposition involves nebulization of a drug superimposed by an acoustic airflow. We investigated the impact of fixed frequency versus frequency sweep acoustic airflow on the improvement of aerosolized drug penetration into maxillary sinuses. METHODS: Fixed frequency and frequency sweep acoustic airflow were generated using a nebulizing system of variable frequency. The effect of sweep cycle and intensity variation was studied on the intranasal sinus deposition. We used a nasal replica created from CT scans using 3D printing. Sodium fluoride and gentamic

Impact of beta thalassemia on maxillary sinuses and sino-nasal passages: A case control study.

OBJECTIVES: Skeletal changes among beta (β) thalassemia children are well documented, but without available data regarding sino-nasal passages alterations. The authors investigated the maxillary sinuses and sino-nasal passages changes in β-thalassemia children and correlated such changes with the amount of transfused red cells and the erythroid marrow activity. METHODS: Clinical analyses including otorhinolaryngical examination (ORL) were obtained in twenty β-thalassemia children and 20 matched healthy controls. Hemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) levels and b

[Comparison of B-mode ultrasonography and computed tomography in the evaluation of maxillary sinusitis in pediatric patients].

The use of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis in pediatric patients has been reported recently because of the improvement of the accuracy of ultrasound technology. We thus compared B-mode ultrasonography and computed tomography in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis in pediatric patients. Thirty-six maxillary sinuses in 18 patients (10 females, 8 males, ages ranging from 7-15 years with an average age of 10.4 years) were examined. Ultrasonography of the maxillary sinus was performed in the horizontal and the vertical direction. Paranasal computed tomography and B-mode ult…

Comparison of ultrasound, radiography, and clinical examination in the diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis: a systematic review.

The objective of this study was to assess the discriminative properties of the methods for diagnosing acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS) in unselected patients. The study design was a systematic review of evaluation studies identified by using Medline, by searching reference lists, by hand searches, and by contacting investigators. Evaluation studies were conducted anywhere in the world. Subjects were adults with suspected AMS. Main outcome measures were: sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratios of the primary studies, weighted means of these parameters in each comparison…

[Evidence for the existence of chronic ethmoid-maxillary sinusitis in infants under 18 months of age].

Oto-rhino-laryngologists usually deny the existence of infant chronic ethmoido-maxillary sinusitis, generally agreeing that the earliest signs of pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses cannot be observed earlier than 18 months of age. Based upon ten cases we present evidence that this notion of "late sinusal pneumatization" should be re-examined, pneumatized maxillary sinuses being possible as early as 11 months of age. Thus, at that age, radiodiagnosed apneumatosis which is considered as physiological, may express various conditions, such as true anatomical apneumatosis, chronic glue sinusit…
