Naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) fractures associated with anterior and posterior frontal sinus wall fractures are among the most challenging cranio-maxillofacial injuries. These represent a major emergency, having a potentially severe clinical picture, with intracranial hemorrhage, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, meningeal lesions, pneumocephalus, contusion or laceration of the brain matter, coma, and in some cases death. In this article, we present the case of a 30-year-old patient with the diagnosis of NOE fracture associated with bilateral anterior and posterior frontal sinus wall fractures cause…

A case of haemorrhage from the external auditory meatus associated with condylar fracture is presented. It is important that haemorrhage from the ear following maxillofacial injuries be investigated thoroughly because displacement of the condyle into the middle cranial fossa also presents in this manner. The patient was treated by intermaxillary fixation and packing of the auditory canal. Packing is not only effective for haemostasis but is also important in preventing subsequent stenosis of the auditory canal.

A case is reported of necrosis of the columella nasi due to prolonged intubation in a 21-year-old road traffic accident patient. He was intubated by the nasal route because of combined head and facial injuries. The necrosis was discovered during surgery for repair of the bony facial injuries. As the patient was in a poor condition, the lesion was not immediately repaired, and the necrotic area was only removed. Definitive repair was carried out four and a half months later, with closure of the oronasal communication with an intravelar veloplasty. Such maxillofacial complications of prolonged e

Eight per cent of 387 acutely head-injured patients had concomitant orbitofacial injuries. Irrespective of the magnitude of brain injury, the main surgical goals in such cases treated were closure of CSF fistulas, maximizing recovery of eye movement, visual and masticatory function, and esthetic reconstruction. The strictly neurosurgical lesions should be dealt with at once because of the risk of intracranial infection. Antibiotic acrylic and antibiotic wax are valuable in such intervention. In most cases it is advantageous to treat lesions of the upper two thirds of the facial complex in the

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Transorbital orbitocranial penetrating injuries (TOPI) are lesions in which a foreign object penetrates the orbit and enters the intracranial cavity through the skull base. These injuries have a high rate of mortality and disability and pose a challenge for surgical treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of TOPIs caused by metallic foreign bodies that were managed with foreign body removal under the guide and vision with cerebral digital subtraction angiography (DSA).
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: In our cases, the trajectory of the wound through the aerated sp

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: By sharing this case, we aim to enhance the understanding of the mental foramen's intricate morphology, ultimately promoting safer and more successful surgical practices in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
ABSTRACT: In surgical procedures near the mental foramen, preserving this vital structure and its contents is crucial. Surgical treatments, including procedures like implants, orthognathic surgery, and tooth extractions, can potentially lead to injuries of the mental nerve, resulting in sensory disturbances such as numbness or tingling in the lower lip and

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injuries to the orofacial region are common and can be challenging to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The tongue is one of the structures that can be involved; however, the incidence of this injury to the tongue appears rare. Most of the reported work on this topic is on children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a three-year prospective study of traumatic tongue lacerations managed at the oral and maxillofacial centers of two tertiary hospitals in the southeast of Nigeria.
RESULT: A total of 37 cases with tongue lacerations among 353 patients with oral and maxillofaci

Intraorbital foreign objects are common after high-velocity injuries and can result in disastrous consequences. A "trivial" facial injury may sometimes obscure the presence of an intraorbital foreign object. Difficulties in the approach to the intraconal space and possible surgical morbidity to the optic nerve make management especially challenging. We are reporting a case wherein an intraconal foreign body was missed during the initial examination of a maxillofacial injury and was subsequently successfully extracted by an endoscopic approach.

This experiment was designed to provide a biological basis for early reconstruction of maxillofacial defects caused by firearms using free vascularized flap transfer. The pathologic changes of small-vessel injury, injury mechanism, and the feasibility for early anastomosis of these vessels in the maxillofacial region following high-velocity missile wounds were studied. Dogs' faces were wounded by a steel sphere, weighing 0.7 g and 1.03 g, with an initial velocity of 1,300 m/s or 1,500 m/s. Angiography and high-speed x-ray photography were used to record the effect of injury to blood vessels an

Failure to identify eye injuries associated with facial fractures can lead to life-altering morbidity. Oral and maxillofacial surgery teams receiving referrals of patients with these injuries have a vital role in ensuring that visual acuity (VA) is recorded at the time of presentation. We present a clinical audit of documentation of VA in 126 patients who sustained orbital floor and zygoma fractures. Our intervention involved a focussed teaching session for trainees responsible for taking such referrals. VA was appropriately documented in 16.5% before the session and 57.1% afterwards. This stu
