Over the last decade substantial improvements have been made in the diagnosis and management of hydatid disease. New diagnostic tests, imaging procedures including ultrasonography, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance and ERCP. Until recently the only definitive treatment for hydatid disease has been surgery, which carries high morbidity, mortality and recurrence. The Pavia District, Northern Italy, is an endemic area of strongyloidiasis. This study reviews the epidemiology and clinics of 150 cases. For this purpose, subjects were categorized for sex, age, origin, profession, acute and chronic disease, symptoms due to larval migration, immunodepression (if present). The incidence, with male predominance (74.7%), peaked among adults (94.6%), and in rural areas (69.3%). Patients experienced digestive (58.6%), cutaneous (34.6%) and respiratory complaints (16.7%). High-performance liquid chromatography method was used to determine blood sulfoxide and sulfone, two metabolites of albendazole. Methanol containing 0.4% acetic acid was employed as mobile phase. Wavelength of 290 nm was chosen for uv-detector and mebendazole was used as internal standard. After a single dosage of albendazole 25 mg/kg was taken orally by healthy volunteers and neurocysticercosis patients, sulfoxide and sulfone were found in blood at 20 and 40 min respectively. The blood peak level appeared at 6 h on an average. The metabolites remained as long as 58-72 h in human blood.

Results of the studies of large intestine microflora, enterokinase and alkaline phosphatase activity in the feces of 298 children and adults suffering from trichocephaliasis are presented. Intestinal dysbacteriosis was observed in 51.7% cases, increased enterokinase activity, in 57.6% cases and increased alkaline phosphatase activity, in 55% cases. Four patients with cholestatic jaundice due to ruptured hydatid liver cyst into the biliary tract underwent endoscopic retrograde sphincterotomy with clearance of the bile ducts. Prompt relief of jaundice followed the produced and no complications occurred. After the procedure all patients received medical treatment (Mebendazole) for 3-4 months and were well at a mean follow-up of 8 months.
