Meckel's diverticulum in the adult: surgical treatment.

Introduction: Management of asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum (MD) incidentally discovered in adults remains controversial. The aim of this study was to determine if incidental diverticula should be removed. Materials and methods: We reviewed a consecutive series of patients surgically managed from January 1994 to December 2016. Patients were divided into two groups according to symptomatic or asymptomatic diverticula, and characteristics were compared. Results: The study included 66 patients: 30 in the symptomatic group (45%) and 36 in the incidental group (55%). We found 12 females (18.2%),

Neuroendocrine tumours within a Meckel's diverticulum.

A Meckel's diverticulum is a common anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. Although the majority of patients do not have any symptoms, malignancies can develop inside these diverticula, with neuroendocrine tumours being the most common. Diverticulectomy is the best option for complicated diverticula but prophylactic resection of asymptomatic diverticula in adults remains controversial. We present a case series of three patients with a neuroendocrine tumour found in a Meckel's diverticulum. Given the number of asymptomatic diverticula not resected, it seems likely that incidental neuroendocrine

Complicated Meckel's diverticulum and therapeutic management.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the treatment options and compare patient management with the literature for patients operated on for an acute abdomen who had complications due to inflammation of the Meckel's diverticulum at our clinics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study retrospectively evaluated 14 patients who had been operated on for acute abdomen and had been diagnosed with Meckel's diverticulitis (MD) in Ege University Medical Faculty Department of General Surgery, between October 2007 and October 2012. RESULTS: Fourteen patients with a diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulitis (MD

Nervous structure of Meckel's diverticulum in children.

Meckel's diverticulum, being considered as the most frequent malformation of the digestive tract, has been largely presented in scientific papers, but a complete physiopathological mechanism for its natural history has not been yet described. We have studied the nervous system and the differences observed in eight Meckel's diverticulums with enteric or ectopic gastric mucosa, using specific immunohistochemical markers. It has been noted a significantly higher density of myenteric nerve fibers in areas with enteric mucosa compared with the areas with gastric heterotopias, while the transition z

[Ileus due to oranges in Meckel's diverticulum].

BACKGROUND: A Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the primitive bowel and the yolk sac which occurs in 1-5% of the population. It causes problems in only very few people. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 39-year-old man developed acute abdominal pain after eating two oranges. The cause of the pain was found during a lower abdominal laparotomy - the small bowel was obstructed by a Meckel's diverticulum and a phytobezoar composed of orange fibres. Both were removed surgically. CONCLUSION: A symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum should be removed; however, in an asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum this approac

Management of asymptomatic or incidental Meckels diverticulum.

This study was conducted to compare the clinicopathologic characteristics of incidentally found and symptomatic cases of Meckels diverticulum with the aim of arriving at a recommendation regarding the management of incidental cases. A retrospective chart review was performed over a period of 24 years. Incidental group had 52 patients and symptomatic group had 128 patients(71%). Obstruction (42.9%) was the most common presentation, followed by diverticulitis (41.4%). Gastrointestinal hemorrhage was found in 33.6% and was commonly associated with obstruction. If the diverticulum has umbilical co

Detection of splenomegaly on Meckel's diverticulum scan.

A 16-year-old boy was seen with the complaint of intermittent lower gastrointestinal bleeding and was referred for a radionuclide Meckelogram. Although Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy failed to reveal heterotopic gastric mucosa, focal accumulation of radiotracer in a large area involving the left side of the abdomen and liver were seen. Both areas of activity cleared gradually, but the first one remained longer and based on its configuration, raised the possibility of splenomegaly. Further ultrasonographic evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of splenomegaly, which was subsequently determined

[Complicated Meckel's diverticulum in adult pathology].

Meckel's diverticulum is the most prevalent abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract seen in approximately 2% of the population. Diagnosing complicated diverticulum is difficult, for its capacity to mime multiple disorders such as appendicitis, ulcer disease, enterocolitis, Chron disease, sigmoid diverticulitis, cholecystitis, and it should be considered in all patients with unexplained chronic abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexpected cause of intestinal obstruction or acute abdomen. Herewith we provide an illustrative presentation, emphasizing the difficulties

[Meckel's diverticulum and duplication of the alimentary tract].

Meckel's diverticulum and duplication of the alimentary tract are very important as the congenital anomalies of ileum. As these two diseases have the common clinical characteristics such as sex, age, symptoms and complications, it is often difficult to diagnose before surgery. This report describes and compared the clinical aspects of Meckel's diverticulum and duplication of the alimentary tract, which were experienced at Nagoya University Hospital and Kariya Toyota General Hospital.

Is incidental Meckel's diverticulum resected safely?

AIM: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the small intestine. The majority of MD cases are discovered incidentally. On the other hand, there is disagreement about the management of incidentally discovered asymptomatic MD. The aim of the study was to compare the clinicopathologic characteristics of incidentally found and symptomatic cases of MD, and to compare morbidity and mortality in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of patients whose MD was resected at our institution between 1989 and 2004 were reviewed and 76 patients were

Gastrointestinal stromal tumour in Meckel's diverticulum.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's Diverticulum is the most commonly encountered congenital anomaly of the small intestine, occurring in approximately 2% of the population. Occasionally Meckel's diverticulum harbors neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65 year old gentleman, presented with a pelvic mass. On exploratory laparotomy, it turned out to be gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) arising from Meckel's diverticulum. Short history and review of literature are discussed. CONCLUSION: Neoplasms occurring from Meckel's diverticulum, even though rare, should be considered as differential diagnosis of pelvic

[Meckel's diverticulum in children: eleven cases].

We report 11 cases of Meckel's diverticulum in children admitted to the department of Paediatrics Surgery of Lomé (Togo). None of the cases was identified before surgery. A systematic search during appendectomy identified 3 cases. It was fortuitously discovered four times, and due to complications in four cases. There was one complication related death. Segmental intestinal resection was the only technique used.
