Effects of Diet on Aristolochic Acid-DNA Adduct Formation: Implications for Balkan Endemic Nephropathy Etiology.

Prolonged exposure to aristolochic acids (AAs) through AA-containing herbal medicine or AA-contaminated food is associated with the development of aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) and Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), both public health risks to which the World Health Organization is calling for global action to remove exposure sources. The AA exposure-induced DNA damage is believed to be related to both the nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity of AA observed in patients suffering from BEN. While the chemical toxicology of AA is well-studied, we investigated in this study the understated effe

Radiologic examinations in pregnancy: a critical appraisal of radiation and contrast risks.

BACKGROUND: Radiologic examinations (medical imaging studies involving ionizing radiation) are sometimes avoided in pregnancy due to concerns about maternal and fetal radiation exposure. However, diagnostic imaging can be critical for maternal and fetal care, and the actual risks are frequently overestimated. OBJECTIVE: To provide a critical appraisal of radiation and contrast exposure during pregnancy, focusing on fetal dosage from commonly used imaging modalities, associated risks, and clinical contexts in which radiologic studies may be appropriate. METHODS: A narrative review of the lite

Understanding mediated sports consumption by Irish children: a qualitative study exploring their exposure and understanding of gambling marketing, risks and harms.

BACKGROUND: Gambling marketing communications create a public health risk by increasing the normalisation of gambling in sports. In a context where broad level studies report significant underage gambling, currently no evidence exists on how these communications are received by children in the Republic of Ireland (hereafter Ireland) and Northern Ireland. To build this evidence base and provide granular detail below broad level data, this study explored the sport consumption habits and views of Irish children (aged 14-17 years) on their exposure, awareness and perceptions of the relationship be

Creating safer social media environments for body image: Evidence and research priorities for multilevel interventions.

Public, policy, and research interest is growing in interventions that create safer social media environments for body image. Although intervention efforts have primarily focused on helping individuals critically evaluate or manage social media, users' experiences are also shaped by parents, peers, influencers, advertisers, social norms, platform systems, and government regulation. This paper applies a social ecological framework to review emerging approaches across intrapersonal, interpersonal, organisational, community, and public-policy levels. At the intrapersonal level, media literacy, te

Laissez les bon temps rouler, but get screened: colon cancer awareness in young Black men in Louisiana.

OBJECTIVE: Black men experience the highest incidence and mortality rates from colorectal cancer (CRC) in Louisiana. Limited awareness of screening guidelines, low perceived risk, and structural barriers to care contribute to delayed detection. This study assessed CRC awareness, risk perceptions, screening intentions, and communication preferences among Black men aged 30-44 in Louisiana to inform targeted intervention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a statewide cross-sectional survey of English-speaking individuals who identified as male, African American or Black, were aged 30-44 and resid

Low-Frequency Intermittent Hypoxia Suppresses Subcutaneous Adipogenesis and Induces Macrophage Polarization in Lean Mice.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and metabolic disorders is complex and highly associated. The impairment of adipogenic capacity in pre-adipocytes may promote adipocyte hypertrophy and increase the risk of further metabolic dysfunction. We hypothesize that intermittent hypoxia (IH), as a pathophysiologic feature of OSA, may regulate adipogenesis by promoting macrophage polarization. METHODS: Male C57BL/6N mice were exposed to either IH (240 seconds of 10% O₂ followed by 120 seconds of 21% O₂, i.e., 10 cycles/hour) or intermittent normoxia (IN) for 6 weeks. S

Not just time: Multidimensional patterns of screen use and adolescent well-being in nine countries and regions.

Although major scholars and policy institutions have long advocated limiting adolescents' screen time to reduce potential health risks, evidence remains insufficient regarding whether such restrictions may overlook the potential benefits of screen use. The present study aimed to comprehensively capture the associations between multiple features of screen engagement and diverse health indicators among adolescents using a large cross-nations dataset. Participants included 57,279 fifteen-year-old adolescents (50.6% female) from nine countries or regions. Regression analyses and latent profile ana

Unveiling the narrative: Italian media's role in shaping public health messaging during COVID-19 - A corpus-assisted discourse analysis.

BACKGROUND: Effective public health communication during emergencies is critical for influencing behaviour and maintaining trust. Newspapers remain a key channel for disseminating institutional guidance, yet the extent to which their coverage aligns with international recommendations (e.g., World Health Organisation, WHO and Pan American Health Organisation, PAHO guidance) is not well established. Italy, the first European country to experience major COVID-19 outbreaks, provides a useful case for assessing the extent to which mainstream newspaper coverage aligned with WHO and PAHO recommendati

Digital Screen Time and Mental Health Difficulties Among Preschool Children in Western China: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: With rising digital media use among young children, concerns have grown regarding its impact on early socioemotional development. However, evidence regarding the dose-response relationship between digital screen time and children's mental health, as well as the potential indirect statistical association with family factors, remains limited. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore the nonlinear association between screen time and mental health outcomes in preschool children, identify a potential threshold, and examine the indirect statistical association of parental discipline in thi

Changes in Toxin Production, Morphology and Viability of Gymnodinium catenatum Associated with Allelopathy of Chattonella marina var. marina and Gymnodinium impudicum.

Allelopathy between phytoplankton organisms is promoted by substances released into the marine environment that limit the presence of the dominating species. We evaluated the allelopathic effects and response of cell-free media of Chattonella marina var. marina and Gymnodinium impudicum in the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum. Additionally, single- and four-cell chains of G. catenatum isolated from media with allelochemicals were cultured to evaluate the effects of post exposure on growth and cell viability. Cell diagnosis showed growth limitation and an increase in cell volume, whic

The Validity of Impressions as a Media Dose Metric in a Tobacco Public Education Campaign Evaluation: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation research increasingly needs alternatives to target or gross rating points to comprehensively measure total exposure to modern multichannel public education campaigns that use multiple channels, including TV, radio, digital video, and paid social media, among others. Ratings data typically only capture delivery of broadcast media (TV and radio) and excludes other channels. Studies are needed to validate objective cross-channel metrics such as impressions against self-reported exposure to campaign messages. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether higher a volume of
