Autobiographical memory refers to events and information about personal life and the self. Within autobiographical memory, many authors make a difference between episodic and semantic components. Study of retrograde amnesia gives information about memory consolidation. According to the "standard model" of consolidation, the medial temporal lobe plays a time-limited role in retrieval memory. Functional neuroanatomy studies of autobiographical memory are very few and many are recent. These studies concern which brain regions are involved in the autobiographical retrieval, episodic or semantic au

CONTEXT: Previous research has demonstrated that metabolic abnormalities accelerate cognitive aging. Although obesity is closely linked to metabolic disorders, it exhibits considerable heterogeneity depending on an individual's metabolic status. However, the relationship between this metabolic heterogeneity in obesity and cognitive aging remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyze the effects of various metabolic obesity phenotypes on cognitive aging.
METHODS: A total of 7521 participants aged over 45 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included. C

Transient global amnesia (TGA), characterised by a profound anterograde amnesia, is a model of interest to study the acquisition of novel meanings independent of episodic functioning. Three patients were tested during a TGA attack, two in the early recovery phase and the third during the acute phase of TGA, with a semantic priming task involving a restructuring process of conceptual knowledge. During TGA, all patients demonstrated priming effects. Results obtained the day after the episode with the same task showed that these effects persisted at least one day. Episodic memory seems not to be

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have revealed that memory performance is diminished in chronic pain patients. Few studies, however, have assessed multiple components of memory in a single sample. It is currently also unknown whether attentional problems, which are commonly observed in chronic pain, mediate the decline in memory. Finally, previous studies have focused on middle-aged adults, and a possible detrimental effect of aging on memory performance in chronic pain patients has been commonly disregarded. This study, therefore, aimed at describing the pattern of semantic, working, and visual a

Memory deficits and hippocampal abnormalities have been described in individuals with thyroid hormone (TH) insufficiencies; however, no study has yet examined their autobiographical memory (AM) abilities, which are known to be compromised by hippocampal damage. Investigations in adults have shown that AM consists of both episodic and semantic components and that the hippocampus is preferentially involved in episodic AM. The present study used the Children's Autobiographical Interview (CAI) to study episodic and semantic AM in 79 children aged 9 to 14 years, including 26 with early-treated cong

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by significant cognitive and functional decline, initially presenting with episodic memory impairment. A thorough neuropsychological assessment is essential for AD diagnosis, particularly in the early stages in which interventions may be more effective. This paper reviews the neuropsychology of Alzheimer's disease, highlighting the cognitive progression of the disease. In the typical forms of AD, episodic memory appears to be the first and foremost affected cognitive domain. As AD progresses, cognitive impairmen

OBJECTIVE: To characterize metabolic correlates of working memory impairment in clinically defined subtypes of early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
BACKGROUND: Established models of working memory suggest a key role for frontal lobe function, yet the association in Alzheimer's disease between working memory impairment and visuospatial and language symptoms suggests that temporoparietal neocortical dysfunction may be responsible.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients with predominantly early-onset Alzheimer's disease were clinically classified into groups with predominantly amnestic, multidomain or visua

Autobiographical memory dysfunction is a pervasive feature of neurodegenerative disorders, but less is known about the integrity of autobiographical memory in Huntington's disease (HD). Deficits in anterograde verbal episodic memory on traditional neuropsychological tests have been detected in HD, however, whether personally-relevant autobiographical retrieval is also affected is unknown. We examined autobiographical memory performance in 26 participants genetically confirmed to have HD who were in the peri-manifest stage of the disease (including 12 in the late premanifest stage and 14 who we

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is a signature feature of fibromyalgia. Many who develop cognitive problems in their middle years are concerned that it is prodromal to Alzheimer's disease.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if deficits in episodic memory and progressive cognitive decline, hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, are prominent in the cognitive makeup of fibromyalgia patients.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, performance on 15 neurocognitive (NC) measures was evaluated in 2 cohorts of fibromyalgia subjects. The first cohort contained 94 subjects with a short duration of cognitive problems

Lesion studies have provided compelling evidence that episodic memory is dependent on the integrity of the medial temporal lobe (MTL). This role of the MTL in episodic memory has been supported by several neuroimaging studies during both episodic encoding and retrieval. After two meta-analyses of positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies, we investigated a possible dissociation within the MTL memory system in relation to encoding and retrieval processes. Based on previous reports that specifically related the function of the MTL in episodic mem

BACKGROUND: Childhood disadvantage is a prominent risk factor for cognitive and brain aging. Childhood disadvantage is associated with poorer episodic memory in late midlife and functional and structural brain abnormalities in the default mode network (DMN). Although age-related changes in DMN are associated with episodic memory declines in older adults, it remains unclear if childhood disadvantage has an enduring impact on this later-life brain-cognition relationship earlier in the aging process. Here, within the DMN, we examined whether its cortical microstructural integrity-an early marker

INTRODUCTION: Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is known to play significant roles in memory through synaptic plasticity and hippocampal volume. However, its function in the prefrontal cortex remains less explored, and differences in the associations of plasma BDNF (pBDNF) and serum BDNF (sBDNF) with cortical function are at present poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether there are differential relationships between pBDNF and sBDNF with prefrontal cortex activity during executive function and episodic memory tasks.
METHODS: Twenty-three participants (7 fem

Episodic memory deficits are frequent symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis and have been associated with dysfunctions of the hippocampus, a key region for learning. However, it is unclear whether genetic factors that influence neural plasticity modulate episodic memory in MS. We thus studied how the Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor Val(66)Met genotype, a common polymorphism influencing the hippocampal function in healthy controls, impacted on brain networks underlying episodic memory in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess how the Brain Derived

Initially, alcohol-related memory deficits were considered only through the prism of Korsakoff's syndrome (KS). It is now clear, however, that chronic alcohol consumption results in memory disorders in alcoholics without ostensible neurologic complications, such as Wernicke's encephalopathy and KS. Most of the principal memory components are affected, including working memory, episodic memory, semantic memory, perceptual memory, and procedural memory. The extent of those cognitive impairments depends on several factors, such as age, gender, nutritional status, and psychiatric comorbidity. Whil…

Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) disproportionately affects women compared to men. Episodic memory decline is one of the earliest and most pronounced deficits observed in AD. However, it remains unclear whether sex influences episodic memory-related brain function in cognitively intact older adults at risk of developing AD. Here we used task-based multivariate partial least squares analysis to examine sex differences in episodic memory-related brain activity and brain activity-behavior correlations in a matched sample of cognitively intact older women and men with a family history of AD fro

Episodic memory is memory for experiences within a specific temporal and spatial context. Episodic memories decline early in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Recollection of episodic memories can fail with both AD and aging, but familiarity and recollection memory uniquely fail in AD. Finding a means to differentiate specific memory failures in animal models is critical for translational research. Four cotton top tamarins participated in an object recognition test. They were exposed to two unique objects placed in a consistent context for 5 daily sessions. Next a delay of 1 day or 1 week was imposed.

This study aimed to investigate the role of early traumatic experiences in development of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in Chinese elderly people. Seventy six patients and 61 controls were selected and assigned into two study groups, MCI and control, respectively. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) was used for assessment of early trauma, episodic memory and association learning scales for memory evaluation. In addition, event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured using electroencephalography (EEG) to indicate brain electrical activity of subjects during memory/cognitive te

Functional neuroimaging studies of episodic memory retrieval generally measure brain activity while participants remember items encountered in the laboratory ("controlled laboratory condition") or events from their own life ("open autobiographical condition"). Differences in activation between these conditions may reflect differences in retrieval processes, memory remoteness, emotional content, retrieval success, self-referential processing, visual/spatial memory, and recollection. To clarify the nature of these differences, a functional MRI study was conducted using a novel "photo paradigm,"

Rumination occurs when an individual becomes mentally stuck and cannot redirect attention away from an unwanted thought demonstrating cognitive inflexibility. Cognitive flexibility is important for various cognitive functions, including episodic memory. Trait rumination is a partial mediator in the relationship between depression and overgeneral episodic memory, suggesting that rumination may negatively influence memory for contextual details. Oscillations in the alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) frequency bands are crucial for various cognitive functions (e.g., attention control and episodi

INTRODUCTION: Neuroinflammatory processes may play a central role in promoting mixed pathologies and cognitive impairment in the oldest-old. We hypothesize that elevated neuroinflammation, indicated by reactive astrocytosis, acts on cerebrovascular disease and separately, on amyloid beta (Aβ) pathology, to promote downstream medial temporal lobe atrophy and memory impairment.
METHODS: We examined whether plasma glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) concentration is associated with vascular territory-defined white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), global Aβ b
