Hippocampal synaptic plasticity and cognition.

Discoveries made over the past 20 years have greatly improved our understanding of how the brain functions. This article focuses on the relation between memory and cellular mechanisms of neuronal and synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Several studies indicate that the hippocampal formation is a crucial element of the neurobiological bases of higher cognitive function. Severe damage to the hippocampal formation is known to produce seemingly permanent anterograde amnesia. A generally accepted hypothesis in neurobiology has been that long-lasting activity-dependent changes in the efficacy of

Frontal-posterior theta oscillations reflect memory retrieval during sentence comprehension.

Successful working-memory retrieval requires that items be retained as distinct units. At the neural level, it has been shown that theta-band oscillatory power increases with the number of to-be-distinguished items during working-memory retrieval. Here we hypothesized that during sentence comprehension, verbal-working-memory retrieval demands lead to increased theta power over frontal cortex, supposedly supporting the distinction amongst stored items during verbal-working-memory retrieval. Also, synchronicity may increase between the frontal cortex and the posterior cortex, with the latter sup

Role of Cyclooxygenase Inhibitors in Diminution of Dissimilar Stress-induced Depressive Behavior and Memory Impairment in Rats.

Memory functions can be considerably affected by various life events and stress has shown to be a chief regulator. Different stress patterns have distinct effects on the overall functioning of the brain. Stress provokes inflammation not only in the periphery but also in the brain. Neuroinflammation causes alterations in neuronal structure and function, which eventually progress to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Inflammatory reactions are modulated through communication between the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. An excessive release of stress hormones and changes in the

Specific marker of feigned memory impairment: The activation of left superior frontal gyrus.

Faking memory impairment means normal people complain lots of memory problems without organic damage in forensic assessments. Using alternative forced-choice paradigm, containing digital or autobiographical information, previous neuroimaging studies have indicated that faking memory impairment could cause the activation in the prefrontal and parietal regions, and might involve a fronto-parietal-subcortical circuit. However, it is still unclear whether different memory types have influence on faking or not. Since different memory types, such as long-term memory (LTM) and short-term memory (STM)

Predicting visual object memory through natural eye movement topography.

How do we visually explore and remember objects in our environment? Despite extensive research, the interplay between eye movements and visual memory remains incompletely understood. Traditional models of eye movements focus on image-specific factors like saliency and semantics, but emerging evidence highlights the role of intrinsic factors (e.g., genetic variability, endogenous dynamics). Additionally, eye movements and memory processes are tightly linked at the neural level. This study investigates the influence of eye movement spatial distribution during free exploration of visual scenes on

The problem of detecting long-term forgetting: Evidence from the Crimes Test and the Four Doors Test.

While most individuals who have problems acquiring new information forget at a normal rate, there have been reports of patients who show much more rapid forgetting, particularly comprising a subsample of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Currently available tests are generally not designed to test this since it requires multiple different tests of the same material. We describe two tests that aim to fill this gap, one verbal, the Crimes Test, the other visual, the Four Doors Test. Each test involves four scenes comprising five features. In each case, this allows four tests of 20 different

Acute nicotine treatment prevents REM sleep deprivation-induced learning and memory impairment in rat.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation (SD) is implicated in impairment of spatial learning and memory and hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP). An increase in nicotine consumption among habitual smokers and initiation of tobacco use by nonsmokers was observed during SD. Although nicotine treatment was reported to attenuate the impairment of learning and memory and LTP associated with several mental disorders, the effect of nicotine on SD-induced learning and memory impairment has not been studied. Modified multiple platform paradigm was used to induce SD for 24 or 48 h during which ra

Participation in Social Skills Therapy is Associated With Enhanced Recall Memory by Children With Down Syndrome: An Exploratory Study.

Participation in social skills therapy (SST) facilitates cognitive functioning in children with developmental disabilities. The present pilot study examined whether participation in SST was associated with enhanced encoding and 1-month delayed recall in children with Down syndrome (DS). Children were presented with novel three-step event sequences in an elicited imitation procedure. Immediate imitation was permitted as an index of encoding; long-term memory was assessed 1 month later. Parents completed questionnaires inquiring about children's participation in SST. Participation in SST was ass

Aerobic physical exercise as a possible treatment for neurocognitive dysfunction in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive dysfunction associated with bipolar disorder (BD) is pervasive, persistent across illness phases, and is demonstrated to predispose and portend psychosocial impairment. Moreover, no approved therapies for various phases of BD have been shown to reliably improve any dimension of neurocognitive performance. In this article, we emphasize that aerobic physical exercise is a viable neurocognitive-enhancing adjunctive treatment for patients with BD. The overarching aim of this review is to emphasize that aerobic physical exercise is a viable neurocognitive-enhancing adjunc

Application of a Natural Language Processing Framework for Data Extraction From Pathology Reports Across Multiple Cancer Types.

BACKGROUND: Pathological reports provide comprehensive insights into the clinical and pathological features of different cancer types. However, extraction of this semi-structured data for research is challenging. To better utilize pathology reports in cancer studies, we developed an efficient natural language processing (NLP) system to automate the extraction of items from pathology reports, facilitating streamlined storage, retrieval, and analysis of clinical data in a centralized database. METHODS: To determine the optimal model for our study, we conducted a comparative analysis of various

The Use of Machine Learning to Estimate Ground Reaction Forces During Running: A Scoping Review of the Current Practices.

Ground reaction forces (GRFs) are essential for assessing running biomechanics, and the combination of wearable sensors and machine learning offers an accessible alternative for estimating GRFs outside controlled environments. This scoping review summarized current methods used to predict GRFs during running. A structured search (2019-2025) identified 36 studies, from which 37% did not report participant's training status, and 59% of all participants were males. Treadmill running was assessed in 58% of studies, which included larger samples (median N = 28) and more steps/participant (median =

Evaluating the generalisability of LiSep LSTM for early prediction of septic shock across US and european cohorts.

Sepsis remains a major public health concern and is associated with high mortality. Early detection and timely intervention are critical for improving outcomes, yet no standardised approach has been universally adopted. The LiSep LSTM model, a Long Short-Term Memory neural network developed using the MIMIC-III database, has demonstrated promising predictive performance but generalisability across regions has not yet been explored. This study evaluated the LiSep LSTM model in an independent European cohort from the AmsterdamUMC (AUMC) database. Model performance was assessed using internal, ext

Limits of Generative Pre-Training in Structured EMR Trajectories with Irregular Sampling.

Foundation models are commonly trained using autoregressive pretraining and are increasingly applied to structured electronic medical records (EMRs) for clinical prediction. However, autoregressive pre-training was originally developed for sequence generation in text, and its suitability for capturing longitudinal clinical context in structured, irregularly sampled EMRs remains insufficiently evaluated. In this work, we return to first principles by examining the patient trajectories generated by autoregressive models. We train two models - a sequence-to-sequence LSTM and a reduced ETHOS-style

Cognitive and Microbiome Impacts of Experimental Ancylostoma ceylanicum Hookworm Infections in Hamsters.

Hookworms are one of the most prevalent and important parasites, infecting ~500 million people worldwide. Hookworm disease is among the leading causes of iron-deficiency anemia in the developing world and is associated with significant growth stunting and malnutrition. In humans, hookworms appear to impair memory and other forms of cognition, although definitive data are hard to come by. Here we study the impact of a human hookworm parasite, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, on cognition in hamsters in a controlled laboratory setting. We developed tests that measure long-term memory in hamsters. We find

A hybrid deep learning and residual connection-based architecture for intrusion detection in autonomous vehicles.

The emergence of Autonomous and Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) has transformed the automotive landscape drastically over the past few years by offering enhanced features in the vehicles for drivers' safety and convenience. These developments have introduced various features in AVs i.e., lane-keeping, cruise control, etc. These features are mainly powered by the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) that communicate using the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus protocol. The components in the AVs communicate with each other by sending and receiving messages via the CAN bus. However, despite incre

ESM2-Kcr: a novel model combining protein language model and deep learning methods for predicting lysine crotonylation sites.

Lysine crotonylation (Kcr) is a vital posttranslational modification that plays a significant role in diverse biological processes such as DNA replication, the cell cycle, spermatogenesis, and embryonic stem cell differentiation. Abnormal Kcr levels are associated with multiple diseases including cancer, neurological disorders, and metabolic diseases, making it crucial for understanding disease pathogenesis and progression. In this study, we introduce ESM2-Kcr, a novel computational model designed for predicting Kcr sites. This model integrates the protein language model ESM2 with advanced dee

A Two-Stage Grip Force Estimation Method for Surgical Robots Based on BiLSTM-iTransformer.

In robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery, precise grasping force feedback is a key factor for enabling delicate manipulation and reducing tissue damage. However, due to confined workspaces and frequent visual occlusions, achieving force feedback via integrated sensors or image signals remains challenging. To obtain grasping-force feedback for single-port surgical robots, this study proposes a two-stage force estimation framework combining Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory-improved Transformer (BiLSTM-iTransformer) with time-series features. First, the prediction task is separated into c

A wearable monitoring system for running gait analysis by diffusion transformer.

Conventional wearable monitoring devices often suffer from insufficient data accuracy and low posture recognition rates, making them inadequate for the demands of professional sports health monitoring. To address these issues, this study proposes a wearable monitoring system for running gait analysis based on the Diffusion Transformer (DiT). The system aims to achieve high-precision running posture recognition and real-time motion monitoring through multi-sensor data fusion and advanced deep learning architecture. First, a wearable system was developed using a nine-axis Micro-Electro-Mechanica
