Primary cervico-uterine anastomosis in a patient with agenesis of the uterine isthmus: A case report and review.

Arrested caudal extension of the fused Müllerian ducts, either complete or segmental, causes obstruction of the outflow tract. We describe a … nsion can be corrected by primary anastomosis, which establishes anatomical continuity and restores menstruation and, possibly, future fertility.

The relation between plasma testosterone levels and the lengths of phases of the menstrual cycle.

Plasma testosterone levels were measured in 331 women of reproductive age. The incidence of clinical signs of hyperandrogenism (hirsutism, acne) was recorded. Ovulatory activity was evaluated clinically by basal body temperature and frequent observation of changes in the appearance of the cervical os and cervical mucus. Plasma testosterone levels were abnormally elevated in patients with clinical signs of hyperandrogenism. The highest mean testosterone levels were noted in the group of hyperandrogenic women with amenorrhea. Significant prolongation of the follicular phase and shortening of the

Menstrual health as an occupational equity issue in high-stress industries: A narrative review.

This review examines menstrual health as a neglected dimension of women's health and occupational equity, with particular attention to high-stress and gendered occupational contexts. It asks how menstruation is addressed or silenced within workplace health frameworks, and how these dynamics are intensified in safety-critical, shift-based, and regulated occupations. A narrative review was conducted to synthesize literature from occupational health, feminist organizational scholarship, health policy, aviation studies, and workplace inclusion research. Aviation is used as a focal case, bringing t…

Changes in functional connectivity of pain modulatory systems in women with primary dysmenorrhea.

Menstrual pain is the most prevalent gynecological complaint, and is usually without organic cause (termed primary dysmenorrhea, PDM). The h … ix PDM subjects and 49 controls received resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging during menstruation and periovulatory phases. The PAG of PDM subjects exhibited adaptive/reactive hyperconnectivity with the sensorimotor cortex during painful menstruation, whereas it exhibited maladaptive hypoconnectivity with the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and d …

Bleeding disorders among young women: a population-based prevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding problems are prevalent in the general population but may indicate a general bleeding disorder. Our aim was to describe … by more than two symptoms, and 10% more than three symptoms. Thirty-seven percent experienced heavy menstruation and of these 22% had different drugs as treatment for menorrhagia. Thirty-eight percent had a family history of heavy menstruation and half of them suffered from heavy menstruation themselves. CONCLUSIONS: Bleeding symptoms were relatively prevalen …

Attitudes and practice of couples regarding sexual relations during the menses and spotting.

To determine attitudes and practices regarding sexual relations during menstruation and vaginal spotting, a cross-sectional descriptive survey was performed at the Instituto de Investigaciones Materno Infantil, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile. A total of 287 women and 206 men were randomly selected from an urban population. Attitudes, beliefs, and practices regarding sexual relations during vaginal bleeding were surveyed and stratified by educational level and other demographic characteristics. Overall, 70% of women and 72% of men were found to avoid sexual relations during menstruation.…

[Oral contraceptives: knowledge and compliance].

One hundred and twenty (120) women, taking contraceptive pills, underwent a structured interview with a view elucidating their knowledge of the physiology of menstruation, the action and side effects of contraceptive pills and their compliance in the taking of contraceptive pills. The most important sources of information were the medical letters in magazines and the women's own doctors, while the teaching in the Folkeskole (primary and lower secondary school) had not had any major influence on the level of information. Well over one third of the interviewed women knew the most important actio…

[Tall stature and its correction in girls].

The paper presents a classification of tall stature and clinical and hormonal findings in 35 girls in the age range of 11 to 18 years with constitutional tall stature. They showed a normal decline in growth hormone (GH) concentrations in the second phase of pubertal maturation. Concentrations of GH clearly correlated with the menstrual status. They were low in regularly menstruating girls, higher in non-menstruating girls and highest in tall girls with irregular menstrual cycles. Estrogen therapy in 7 girls decelerated growth rates and promoted epiphyseal ossification. Regular menstrual cycles

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding in Adolescent: Normal or a Sign of an Underlying Disease?

Heavy, and often irregular, menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a common gynecologic complaint among adolescents. During the first few post-menarcheal years, anovulatory cycles related to immaturity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis are the most common etiology for abnormal uterine bleeding and should be considered as a part of normal pubertal development rather than a disease. If an already regular menstrual cycle becomes irregular, secondary causes of anovulation should be ruled out. Inherited and acquired bleeding disorders, such as von Willebrand disease, and quantitative and qualitative

Menstrual effluent in endometriosis shows no difference in volume, VEGF-A, MMP2 and MMP9 or sFLT.

Since retrograde menstruation is considered a key event in the aetiology of endometriosis, this study sought to determine whether the menstrual effluent of women with this condition is different from that of those with a normal pelvis. As the amount of blood lost during menstruation is thought to be higher in this group, measured objective menstrual blood loss (MBL) was measured. In addition, factors enhancing both ectopic implantation of endometrium and its subsequent growth (by establishing a neo-vasculature) were chosen for study. Our hypothesis was that they are increased in the menstrual …

Fifteen young women with a diagnosis of secondary hypothalamic amenorrhea of at least 2 years' duration were given either 50 mg naltrexone d … impaired by naltrexone therapy. In functional hypothalamic amenorrheic patients with normal weight, menstruation might be restored by either placebo or naltrexone, but naltrexone provides a clinical and therapeutic advantage by increasing the ovulation rate.

Fighting for menstrual equity through period product pantries.

BACKGROUND: Menstruators facing period poverty often struggle with menstrual hygiene and waste management, which can result in harmful short- and long-term health outcomes such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and vulvar contact dermatitis. Research indicates that 42% of menstruators in the United States have difficulty affording period products. Traditional methods of distributing period products through social services may unintentionally undermine menstruators' agency, leading to disempowerment and inefficient resource allocation. Period product pantries are a novel approach a

Aspects of the laboratory identification of von Willebrand disease in women.

The increased prevalence of the laboratory diagnosis of von Willebrand disease (vWD) in women presenting with menorrhagia has raised concern … conceivably mask the diagnosis of vWD. Historically, the reports of a decrease in vWF levels during menstruation have been in a relatively small total number of patients; this has not been confirmed in two recent studies. In one study of 95 normal menstruating females sampled serially at days 4 to 7, 11 to 15, and 21 to 28, there was no variation. In another s …

Menstrual Technology Innovations and the Implications for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding.

Menstruation is a personal and cultural experience with financial and health implications. Menstruation historically has been managed with disposable commodities, including tampons and pads. New technologies, including underwear and menstrual cups and discs, have emerged to address diverse menstrual needs such as prioritization of sustainability, discretion, and inclusivity. New technologies are not routinely integrated into history taking or validated questionnaires, which currently rely on traditional tampon and pad use for identifying individuals with heavy menstrual bleeding. Review of men…

An Interesting Presentation About Cyclical Menstrual Psychosis with an Updated Review of Literature.

Cyclical menstrual psychosis is an uncommon, generally a self-limiting mental illness that occurs only in females. It is associated with other menstruation-related disorders and stressful psychogenic factors. Nonetheless, many cases remain unrecognized due to poor awareness of its presence. A young female who presented with psychotic and mood symptoms during each cycle of menstruation was admitted to the psychiatric inpatient unit. There was severe disruption in her activities of daily living and socio-occupational functioning. Treatment involved bio-psycho-social approach in collaboration wit…

Menstrual hygiene practice among adolescent girls in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls face several challenges relating to menstruation and its proper management. Lack of adequate sanitary products, inadequate water supply, and privacy for changing sanitary pads continue to leave adolescent girls with limited options for safe and proper menstrual hygiene in many low-income settings, including Ethiopia. These situations are also compounded by societal myths, stigmas surrounding menstruation, and discriminatory social norms. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled proportion of safe menstrual hygiene management among adole…
