INTRODUCTION: Medical education has been changing, and the evaluation strategies that make it possible to address not only theoretical knowledge but also clinical skills. In Mental Health, these skills play a central role. The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is one of the evaluations that could assess clinical skills. This article describes the implementation and performance for the evaluation of undergraduate students since the OSCE's introduction in 2015.
METHODS: An explanation of the implementation is made, and a description of the OSCEs carried out to undergraduate medic

Mental health literacy (MHL) has been identified as a factor influencing early help-seeking for mental health problems (MHPs) and stigmatizing attitudes. However, the lack of consensus on its definition has led to considerable heterogeneity in measurement and, consequently, methodological challenges in comparing data. In this way, the present study was conducted with the following objectives: in Phase I, mapping the existing literature through a scoping review; in Phase 2, 28 experts in the field of mental health participated to develop a consensus statement on the relevance and importance of

Integrating spirituality and religiousness (S/R) into mental health (MH) treatment aligns with our ethics codes and professional guidelines, and it can promote therapeutic outcomes. There is emerging evidence among samples of professional clinicians and graduate students that the Spirituality Competency Training in MH curriculum (SCT-MH; Pearce et al., 2019) may address the dearth of training in this intersection. However, SCT-MH needs to be assessed among undergraduates to support vocational development and those who pursue graduate school or bachelor-level mental health work. In this explora

Sexual and gender minorities have a higher risk for health and nutrition-related disparities across the life course compared to the heterosexual or cisgender population. Experiences of stigmatization and discrimination are associated with diminished mental health quality and psychological distress, which are risk factors for developing various eating disorders. Other nutrition disparities include increased risk for food insecurity, body dissatisfaction, and weight complications, such as those experienced by the transgender population in association with gender-affirming hormone therapies. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) populations are more susceptible to overall poorer health and greater healthcare disparities than heterosexuals. LGBTQIA communities have higher rates of substance and tobacco abuse, sexually transmitted infections, certain types of cancer, and mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and suicide. For equitable, culturally competent care to be provided to the LGBTQIA communities, healthcare workers, including physical therapists, need to be equipped with the knowledge to perform skillful, patient-centered e

Understanding differences in social-emotional behavior can help identify atypical development. This study examined the differences in social-emotional development in children at increased risk of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis (infant siblings of children diagnosed with the disorder). Parents completed the Brief Infant-Toddler Social-Emotional Assessment (BITSEA) to determine its ability to flag children with later-diagnosed ASD in a high-risk (HR) sibling population. Parents of HR (n = 311) and low-risk (LR; no family history of ASD; n = 127) children completed the BITSEA when th

Violence and abuse in competitive sports, such as physical and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect and sexual abuse, affect children, adolescents and adults alike and lead to severe physical, psychological and social consequences. In current medical and educational care concepts of athletes, there is a lack of consistent integration of sports/psychiatric, clinical psychological and psychotherapeutic, developmental pediatric and developmental psychological expertise. Problem areas arise from fine lines between harassment, non-physical and physical violence. The present position pape

Both dementia and diabetes mellitus are long-term disabling conditions and each may be a co-morbidity of the other. Type 2 diabetes is associated with a 1.5- to 2-fold higher risk of dementia. Diabetes also may occur for the first time in many individuals with mental ill health, including cognitive impairment and dementia, and this may complicate management and lead to difficulties in self-care. Case finding is often poor for cognitive impairment in medical settings and for diabetes in mental health settings and this needs to be addressed in the development of care pathways for both conditions

Feelings in humans are mental states representing groups of physiological functions that usually have defined behavioural purposes. Feelings, being evolutionarily ancient, are thought to be coordinated in the brain stem of animals. One function of the brain is to prioritise between competing mental states and, thus, groups of physiological functions and in turn behaviour. Plants use groups of coordinated physiological activities to deal with defined environmental situations but currently have no known mental state to prioritise any order of response. Plants do have a nervous system based on ac

OBJECTIVES: For young adults, experiences of life-disruptive mental distress often involve social isolation, stigma and reduced self-worth, which can impede recovery during a critical period of identity formation. This study explores how six young adults in Denmark, recruited through the OPUS early psychosis intervention program, retrospectively assessed how, where and why they were enabled to act within everyday contexts to catalyse recovery.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: An abductive thematic analysis was conducted using life story interviews followed by intensive interviews focused on youth

An empirically derived system for classifying psychopathology has long been a goal in psychiatric research. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been criticized for high comorbidity and heterogeneous symptom presentations among DSM diagnoses. Competing alternative models include the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology, a quantitative, dimensional alternative, and network theories, which conceptualize mental disorders as emergent from dynamic interactions of symptoms and mechanisms. Fisher (see record 2026-72441-001) introduced a set-theoretic framework to id

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to test the theoretical model assuming that parental indifference arises as a result of the parent experiencing stress in the relationship with their child. Therefore, we tested the model describing the relations among the variables of: (a) parent's experience of stress in the relationship with their child, (b) formation of a negative mental representation of the child in the parent's mind, (c) indifference toward the child, and (d) withdrawal of the parent from the relationship with their child. Subsequently, it was tested whether parental indifference was

People living with HIV in poverty have limited tangible and mental resources coupled with competing demands for these resources. Competing demands require individuals to make choices that may be beneficial to them in the short term but not in the long term. Past research has shown that food insecurity is related to sexual risk behaviors among people living with HIV. Individuals who are food insecure may sell sex in order to obtain food or lack of food may lead to a depletion of mental resources to negotiate safe sex. Substance use may also create additional constraints on these already limited

The metaverse is gaining traction in the general population and has become a priority of the technological industry. Defined as persistent virtual worlds that exist in virtual or augmented reality, the metaverse proposes to afford a range of activities of daily life, from socializing and relaxing to gaming, shopping, and working. Because of its scope, its projected popularity, and its immersivity, the metaverse may pose unique opportunities and risks for mental health. In this viewpoint article, we integrate existing evidence on the mental health impacts of video games, social media, and virtu
