Urban Mental Health: Perspectives of Local Stakeholders on Factors That Shape Mental Health of City Residents.

Mental health issues are more prevalent in urban areas, which is increasingly concerning as urbanization accelerates worldwide. Therefore, understanding the various aspects of urban life that influence mental health is crucial. We explored the perspectives on urban mental health of local professionals who are working within the field of mental health and policy in urban settings. Since this group of stakeholders has the professional capacity to shape the way mental health is addressed at the local level, it is particularly important to understand how they conceptualize urban mental health and

Client-Level Effects of States' Mental Health Agency Expenditures and Mental Health Parity Legislation.

OBJECTIVE: Despite federal parity legislation, gaps in access to behavioral health care persist across the United States. Stronger parity implementation has been associated with an improved system-level mental health infrastructure. The authors determined whether parity and higher per capita expenditures lead to better client-level access and outcomes. METHODS: This analysis of individual-level data extends previous system-level work by examining client-level outcomes across the top 10 and bottom 10 states for per capita state mental health agency (SMHA) expenditures and parity implementation

Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health Care: Implications for Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing-A Scoping Review.

AI is increasingly being integrated into mental health support, with applications spanning chatbots, large language models, digital therapeutics and clinical decision-support systems. Although these technologies have demonstrated potential to improve access to care and support clinical practice, their implications for psychiatric mental health nursing (PMHN) remain insufficiently synthesized. This scoping review aimed to examine how AI is being applied in mental health care and to synthesize its implications for psychiatric mental health nursing practice and related nursing-relevant outcomes.

One Health approach to mental health- mental health recovery in times of crisis: conference proceeding.

BACKGROUND: Globally, mental health disorders are on the rise in response to both natural and man-made crises. Especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Ethiopia, this is further stretching the already limited mental health facilities, necessitating an innovative solution to the challenges it presents. With the primary goal of examining methods to enhance the quality and accessibility of mental health care in Ethiopia, the Center for International Health at the University hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (CIHLMU), the International Network for Cooperation in Men

Generational differences in mental health and drivers of youth mental health decline in Australia and the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: The sharp decline in mental health among younger generations has become a key global health crisis of the twenty-first century. While often linked to short-term life-cycle stages or common period effects, emerging evidence indicates distinct "generational scarring" among Millennials and Gen Z (Generation Z). The causes of this decline in mental health are still debated, with theories ranging from economic insecurity to social fragmentation. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to disentangle Age, Period, and Cohort (APC) effects to determine whether the youth mental health crisis is

The Mental Wellness Tool: A Brief Screener for Mental Disorders, Substance Use Disorders, and Suicide Risk.

OBJECTIVE: Brief screening and triage tools are essential for reducing mental health disparities and for expanding access to care globally. This article describes the validation of the 13-item Mental Wellness Tool (mwTool-13) against routine psychiatric assessment in an acute care setting. METHODS: The mwTool-13 is a brief two-step questionnaire used to screen for the presence of psychiatric conditions and to stratify positive results into four categories: common mental disorders, severe mental disorders, substance use disorders, and suicide risk. The tool was administered to 269 patients rec

Psychological Violence and Mental Health Outcomes in NextGen Athletes: Moderating Role of Mental Performance Skills.

This study aimed to (a) identify NexGen athletes' levels of mental health, anxiety, and depressive symptoms; (b) determine associations between sport type, psychological violence, mental performance, and athletes' mental illness and mental health; and (c) assess whether mental performance moderates these associations. A total of 318 NextGen athletes completed an online survey. Results showed that 19.8% and 21.4% reported clinical anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively, and 45.3% were flourishing. Participating in an aesthetic sport was significantly associated with lower mental health.

Mental Health Care at the Borders of Youth, Trauma and Migration: An Exploratory Survey of Mental Health Practitioners.

Young asylum seekers and refugees often present with complex mental health needs arising from forced migration, trauma and ongoing legal uncertainty. Existing evidence indicates that mental health practitioners frequently report lower confidence in assessment and intervention when working with asylum seekers and refugees; however, most research to date has focused on adult populations. An exploratory qualitative survey containing open-ended questions was distributed to mental health practitioners between 1 June and 1 September 2025. Interpretive description guided the inductive analysis of fre

Mental health knowledge and service utilization among black adults: Moderation by mental illness stigma.

Black adults delay treatment seeking and use mental health services at significantly lower rates than white adults, often resulting in more severe and chronic mental illness. Understanding the complex relationship between mental health knowledge, stigma, and service utilization is critical. This study examines how general and specific mental health knowledge are associated with willingness to engage in help-seeking behaviors and the moderating role of stigma. A cross-sectional survey of Black adults across the United States (N = 1117) assessed mental health knowledge, health service utilizatio

Positive mental wellbeing or symptoms of depression? Discriminant validity of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale.

BACKGROUND: Scales for the measurement of mental wellbeing and psychological distress are often used as if they measure different underlying concepts. This assumption is addressed in the present study by examining the discriminant validity of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) with respect to the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). METHODS: The present study is based on data (n = 1690) from a baseline data collection which was carried out as part of the evaluation of 'Prompt Mental Health Care' (PMHC), the Norwegian Version of the British 'Improving Access to Psychologica

What Is Mental Pain? A Systematic Review and Metasynthesis of Qualitative Research on the Lived Experience of Mental Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Mental pain - a pain not primarily felt in the body - is a predictor of suicide and is often described as one of the most distressing aspects of depression. However, the absence of a clear definition hampers both research and clinical practice. This metasynthesis aims to characterize the lived experience of mental pain to inform the future development of a definition. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science to identify qualitative studies reporting first-person accounts of mental pain. Thematic synthesis was used to gene

Complex PTSD among persons with serious mental illness receiving community mental health services.

BACKGROUND: Complex PTSD (CPTSD) is often associated with prolonged or repeated trauma exposure and the experience of intimate partner and childhood abuse. CPTSD includes the criteria for PTSD (re-experiencing, avoidance, and sense of threat) in addition to three criteria for self-organization disturbances (affective dysregulation, negative self-concept, and relational disturbance). METHODS: This study aimed to assess profiles of CPTSD symptoms and their association with psychiatric distress among people with co-occurring Serious Mental Illness (SMI; schizophrenia/schizoaffective, bipolar, an

Addressing mental health deserts: a geographic and economic analysis of mental health service gaps in Houston.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of mental health challenges in the United States, particularly among low-income communities, has highlighted significant disparities in access to mental health services. This study investigated the concept of "mental health deserts," areas with insufficient mental health care providers, in the city of Houston, Texas. By utilizing the Distressed Community Index (DCI) to identify economically disadvantaged areas and sampling Psychology Today's database of over 3,000 licensed therapists in the Houston area to map mental health service availability, this res

Multi-modal EEG NEO-FFI with Trained Attention Layer (MENTAL) for mental disorder prediction.

Early detection and accurate diagnosis of mental disorders is difficult due to the complexity of the diagnostic process, resulting in conditions being left undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Previous studies have demonstrated that features of Electroencephalogram (EEG) data, such as Power Spectral Density (PSD), are useful biomarkers for indicating the onset of various mental disorders. Existing models using EEG data are typically trained to distinguish between healthy and afflicted individuals, and they are unable to distinguish between individuals with different disorders. We propose MENTAL (Multi

Evaluation of a smoking cessation program for adults with severe mental illness in a public mental health service.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT: Smoking rates have decreased in the general population but remain high among people with severe mental illness (SMI). WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE: An individualized smoking cessation program was tested with 99 adults with SMI. The program showed it is possible to help people with SMI smoke fewer cigarettes and reduce nicotine addiction. Customized smoking cessation programs are essential for those with high nicotine dependence and mental health challenges. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Mental health services should offer tailored tobacco cessation pro
