Inferior mesenteric venous thrombosis (IMVT) is a very rare disease of colon ischemia. We experienced two cases of IMVT that required operations. The first patient was a 74-year-old male, who was admitted to our hospital because of melena and diarrhea. He was diagnosed with IMVT by angiography. As no improvement was seen after the conservative therapy for a month, left colectomy and transverse colostomy were performed. There was a small ulcer in the resected colon mucosa. The findings of histopathological examination revealed that mild and repeated ischemia of the colon had been caused. The se

Rectal stump washout with cytolytic agents is recommended and usually performed during anterior rectal or rectosigmoid resection. The use of a linear stapler instrument during ultralow anterior resection makes the placement of pelvic clamps difficult for rectal stump washout prior to resection. The objective of this work is to demonstrate the use of a simple procedure, the occlusive tourniquet for rectal stump washout. Occlusive tourniquet applied to open technique: after complete dissection of the rectum and sigmoid colon according to the usual technique, a simple piece of tubing from an intr

Enteric drainage and intraperitoneal graft position is the preferred technique for pancreas transplantation at most transplant centers. The technique of retroperitoneal pancreas transplantation was first described by Boggi et al. [Transplantation,79 (2005), 1137]. In this case report, a modified model of retroperitoneal pancreas transplantation with systemic-enteric drainage is presented. A 48-yr-old patient underwent combined retroperitoneal pancreas and kidney transplantation because of type-I-diabetes, and diabetic nephropathy. At the time of transplantation, the patient had a body mass ind

Postparturient sow losses caused by Clostridium difficile have not been reported in the veterinary literature. Recently in Croatia, in a large outdoor production unit with suboptimal environmental conditions, a sudden increase in postparturient sow mortality was diagnosed. After postpartal application of enrofloxacine to postparturient mastitis metritis agalactia (MMA) suffering sows, diarrhea, respiratory distress, and mortality of these sows were recorded. While 13% of MMA suffering and treated sows died, only 0.4% of the non-treated (no MMA suffering) sows died postpartum. Gross pathology r

We report herein the case of a 65-year-old woman who was referred to our department with prolonged ileus symptoms despite conservative therapy. A plain abdominal radiograph showed intestinal gas shadows with an air-fluid level in the lesser curvature of the stomach. As no improvement was achieved by the insertion of a short tube, a long tube was inserted. A loop formation of the long tube in the subphrenic region was detected on an abdominal radiograph, and an enterogram showed an interruption in the ileum in the lower abdomen. The patient was diagnosed as having an adhesional ileus and a stra

A 17-y-old Rocky Mountain gelding was presented to the Virginia-Maryland Veterinary Teaching Hospital because of a 4-wk history of anorexia, weight loss, lethargy, and fever of unknown origin. Abdominal ultrasound revealed lymphadenomegaly of the abdominal and colonic lymph nodes, thickening of the wall of the large colon, and a mass associated with the large colon. The horse was euthanized given a poor prognosis. On autopsy, an ~20-cm diameter mass was found within the mesocolon between the right ventral and right dorsal colon. The mass had invaded through the colonic walls and formed a fistu

BACKGROUND: Ascertaining the origin of large tumors located in the region of the pancreas head and adjacent mesocolon can pose a challenge preoperatively. En bloc pancreatoduodenectomy with hemicolectomy is often required towards curative tumor resection (R0) of malignant tumors in this region.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we report a case of a 48-year-old man with two contiguous masses each 5 cm in size, located in the pancreatic head. The masses were detected incidentally by abdominal ultrasonography at an annual health check. Endoscopic biopsies revealed inflammation with no malignancy. Cross

BACKGROUND: The safety and feasibility of laparoscopic colectomy for T4 colorectal cancer remain controversial. We believe that setting a "Goal" that will guide the surgeons in returning from the deep layer could be the key to safe en bloc resection of neighboring organs. For descending colon cancer, the cranial-first approach makes it possible to clearly visualize the pancreas and origin of the transverse mesocolon, leading to safe splenic flexure mobilization and complete mesocolic excision, which is the strongest advantage of this approach.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old woman was diagno

Internal hernias involve herniation of viscera into an abdominal compartment through a defect in the mesentery or peritoneum. Herniation may occur through normal anatomic structures or through pathologic defects secondary to congenital abnormality, inflammation, trauma, or surgery. Patients with an internal hernia most commonly present with acute bowel obstruction. While internal hernia is an uncommon cause of bowel obstruction, making up approximately 0.2-0.9% of cases (Choi, 2017), the incidence is increasing due to greater use of techniques such as Roux-en-Y for liver transplant and gastric

OBJECTIVE: The appearance of a middle mesenteric artery is a rare branching variation, with an incidence lower than 0.1%. Our case reports such an anatomical artery pattern which was discovered in a male Caucasian cadaver during routine educational dissection. This alternation is seldom encountered and may trouble diagnostic and surgical interventions.
CASE REPORT: The case of a Middle Mesenteric Artery is described, as a vessel originating from the Abdominal Aorta 3.3 cm below the origin of the Superior Mesenteric and 3.8 cm above the origin of the Inferior Mesenteric Artery. The middle mese

A 28-year-old female presented with a huge intra-abdominal mass. Initially a mesenteric mass was diagnosed, but her tumor was found to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Laparotomy was performed. The mass was resected en bloc with clear surgical margins in January 2007. It was found to be 20 × 18 × 16 cm. In order to remove the tumor, the left half of transverse colon with its mesocolon, spleen, body and tail of pancreas, and a part of the small intestine had to be removed. The mass was tightly attached to these viscera. The tumor was surgically removed three years ago. The pathology

Superior mesenteric artery(SMA) syndrome is rare disorder, which is caused by a reduction in the aortomesenteric angle causing a duodenal obstruction. It is usually occurs after a period of weight loss, nausea, and vomiting by a partial obstruction of the third portion of the duodenum. If conservative management fails then a laparotomy with a duodenojejunostomy is indicated. Recently, a minimally invasive or laparoscopic approach to the retroperitoneum or duodenal detachment was introduced. Although the role of a laparoscopy in managing SMA syndrome is not clearly defined, a laparoscopic duode

A 45-year-old man was suffering from abdominal pain and vomiting. He was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of ileus and obstructive jaundice. He had undergone Roux-en-Y anastomosis for choledocholithiasis 14 years earlier. A computed tomography scan revealed a dilated afferent loop and dilated intrahepatic bile duct. Upper gastrointestinal examination with contrast medium and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography showed a high intestinal obstruction around the jejunojejunal anastomosis. The patient underwent laparotomy based on a diagnosis of obstructive jaundice due to ileus. Duri

Noncirrhotic portal hypertension is a common cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in infants, children, and adolescents in India. More than one major bleeding episode, severe hypersplenism, presence of fundal varices, rare blood group, remoteness from the hospital, and patient noncompliance to sclerotherapy formed the main indications for shunt surgery. One hundred four cases of noncirrhotic portal hypertension (age range, 18 months to 20 years) underwent side-to-side lienorenal shunt (SSLR) without splenectomy in a period of 15 years. Splenic veins varying in diameter from 4 to 18 mm and

INTRODUCTION: Complete mesocolic excision (CME) may increase lymph node retrieval and provide a more complete oncologic excision compared with D2 dissection, although its perioperative safety remains uncertain. This systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis compared clinical and operative outcomes between CME and D2 in right colectomy.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central were searched through November 2025. Randomized controlled trials comparing CME with D2 were included. Frequentist analyses used random-effects models with DerSimonian-Laird estimation. Bayesian random-effects mo

BACKGROUND: Right-sided colon cancer (RSCC) exhibits distinct characteristics, yet specific prognostic determinants remain insufficiently defined. This multicentre retrospective study evaluated clinicopathological and surgical factors influencing survival in a real-world cohort undergoing curative resection for non-metastatic RSCC.
METHODS: We analysed 800 adults undergoing curative-intent resection for non-metastatic RSCC across 28 centres (2018-2024). The primary outcome was 3-year overall survival (OS). Multivariate Cox model identified prognostic factors. An exploratory, post hoc subgroup

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive right hemicolectomy (RH) with complete mesocolic excision (CME) is technically demanding due to variable mesenteric vascular anatomy and the need for precise dissection. Intraoperative visualisation tools such as three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions, augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) are increasingly used to address these challenges. This review evaluates current evidence on their operative performance, safety and oncologic metrics.
METHOD: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyse (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, a PubMe

BACKGROUND: Despite conflicting data regarding oncological outcomes, studies demonstrate that complete mesocolic excision (CME) and central vascular ligation (CVL) for right-sided colon cancer removes significantly more tissue and yields higher lymph node counts when compared to conventional resection. This study aims to report the safety profile of CME and CVL in patients undergoing robotic surgery for right-sided colon cancer during the introduction of this technique across two institutions.
METHODS: Patients who underwent an elective robotic right colectomy with CME and CVL for right-sided
