A dominant syndrome of metacarpal and metatarsal asymmetry with tarsal and carpal fusions, syndactyly, articular dysplasia and platyspondyly.

A mother and daughter with metacarpal and metatarsal asymmetry, tarsal and carpal fusions, long bone articular dysplasia and platyspondyly are reported as a possible autosomal dominant syndrome affecting skeletal development. The asymmetry of the second metacarpals is perhaps the most striking finding and resulted in a range of bone lengths in the two individuals from minus 6.3 to plus 3.7 standard deviations from the mean.

[Multiple pseudoxanthomatour rheumatoid nodules].

2 cases of Rheumatoid arthritis associated with multiple subcutaneous nodules were presented, which resembled "pseudoxanthomatour rheumatoid nodules" as before reported. In the first case, the asymmetrical joint involvement has been preceded by the formation of subcutaneous nodules since 5 years; In the second case, arthritis appeared long before the nodules were formed. In both cases, circumscript vasculitis and high titer of rheumatoid factor were noticed and cystic activities were found in several nodules.

Incidence of metabolic bone disease in preterm infants of birth weight <1250 g and in those suffering from bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Preterm infants are exposed to a higher risk of developing Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) with an increased bone fragility, … group) versus infants who did not develop it (no-BPD group). We examined, in preterms <1.250 g, the metacarpus bone transmission time (mc-BTT) at birth, 21 days and 36 weeks of gestational age (GA) together with biochemical markers of bone status. RESULTS: We included 135 patients, 55 with BPD. BPD patients received less total proteins in the first two week …

The effect of heel elevation on the stiffness gradient index of the digital flexor tendons in the equine forelimb of clinically normal horses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of heel elevation on in vivo measurement of stiffness gradients by means of acoustoelastography in the dig … nd DDFTs differed significantly in loaded versus unloaded tendons and at different locations of the metacarpus. Incremental heel elevation had the greatest and most consistent effect on the SGI in the mid-metacarpal region in both flexor tendons. At this level, the stiffness gradient tended to decrease when the angle of heel elevation increased from 0 to 8 d …

Bovine fluorosis in Sweden.

Fluorotic lesions have been studied in cows and calves of SRB breed on farms belonging to 2 agricultural companies. From the one company (HP) in Dalecarlia 3 calves, 4 heifers and 2 cows were examined and from the other (B) in Södermanland 12 bull-calves. The submitted material consisted of a carcase from 1 dead calf and skull, metacarpus and in some cases kidneys from slaughtered animals. The fluorine content of feed and water samples was determined. In material from HP extensive enamel defects and strong wear were found in the deciduous incisors. Fluorotic lesions in calves have not been des…

A family with X-linked recessive fusion of metacarpals IV and V.

We describe a family with a distinctive malformation of the hand consisting of the fusion of the 4th and the 5th metacarpal bones. Usually this anomaly is clinically recognizable by an ulnar deviation of the 5th finger; moreover, the 5th metacarpal is usually hypoplastic and the 5th ray is consequently short. There is, however, great variability in expression, so the degree of fusion may range from minimal to complete and also the external aspect of the hand may vary. This anomaly can be either isolated or part of a syndrome. For the isolated form, two possible hereditary mechanisms have been

Loss of bone mass after Colles' fracture: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Colles' fracture usually associated with osteoporosis is regarded as the predictor of subsequent osteoporotic fracture. However, it is not clear how the local changes of bone mass take place during the course of treatment and whether the changes are related to clinical practice. The objective of the current study was to investigate the local changes of bone mass in patients with Colles' fracture and their possible clinical relevance in a follow-up study. METHODS: The radiograms of the second metacarpal in 64 patients with Colles' fracture were assessed for bone density immediately

[Diagnosis and treatment of complications associated with closed multi-fractures in metacarpals].

OBJECTIVE: To pay attention to the diagnosis and treatment of the complications associated with closed multi-fractures in metacarpals. METHODS: From 1997 to 2000, out of 382 patients with closed multi-fractures in metacarpals, 12 had complications. In 7 cases of fractures at the second, third, fourth and fifth metacarpal shaft, complicated by acute compartment syndrome in hand, compartmental fascia were incised for decompress; open reduction and internal fixation were performed. In 4 cases of fractures at the metacarpal base, complicated by acute carpal tunnel syndrome, the fracture was reduc

[Two-pin L fixation of fractures of the fifth metacarpal neck].

The authors present a retrospective review of 48 fractures of the fifth metacarpal neck in 48 patients, who underwent internal fixation using the two-pin L procedure. These fractures were treated between 1994 and 2000, in 5 female and 43 male patients with an average age of 27 years (range 14 to 58). Fighting and sporting accidents were the main etiology of injury. The indication for surgical treatment was volar displacement of over 30 degrees. The two-pin L procedure consists of stabilizing the fragments after reduction using one intra-medullary pin 2 mm in diameter introduced through a proxi

An in vitro biomechanical investigation of an intramedullary nailing technique for repair of third metacarpal and metatarsal fractures in neonates and foals.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a dorsoproximal extra-articular approach for insertion of 8.25-mm, solid-titanium, intramedullary (IM) interlocking nails into ostectomized foal third metacarpal (MC3) and third metatarsal (MT3) bones; to compare the monotonic mechanical properties of IM nail constructs with paired intact bones; and to determine the effects of age, body weight, fore- or hindlimb, and left or right limb on the mechanical testing variables. ANIMAL OR SAMPLE POPULATION: Twenty bone pairs (10 MC3, 10 MT3) collected from 10 foals of various weights and ages. METHODS: One bone from each pair

Arthroscopic surgery in a reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata).

An 8-mo-old captive male reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) developed an acute lameness (grade IV/V) of the right forelimb, with swelling of the metacarpophalangeal joint. A traumatic injury was suspected based on clinical, radiographic, and arthroscopic evaluation. Several abnormalities were identified arthroscopically, including synovitis, cartilage damage, and an osteochondral fragment. Medial collateral ligament damage was also suspected based on radiographic evaluation. Arthroscopy provided a means of diagnosis and treatment of the abnormalities identified. The lamene

Calving chain fractures. Radiographic assessment of healing.

Calving chain fractures are highly characteristic injuries that when treated by casting, exhibit a predictable healing pattern. By knowing how such fractures appear radiographically at 1, 2, and 3 months following injury, it is much easier to decide when the fracture has become strong enough to bear weight, thus avoiding recasting the leg. This article describes the appearance of calving chain fractures as they heal over time, and how they appear when they do not.
