Mercury (Hg) is a toxic contaminant that has been mobilized and distributed worldwide and is a threat to many wildlife species. Amphibians are facing unprecedented global declines due to many threats including contaminants. While the biphasic life history of many amphibians creates a potential nexus for methylmercury (MeHg) exposure in aquatic habitats and subsequent health effects, the broad-scale distribution of MeHg exposure in amphibians remains unknown. We used nonlethal sampling to assess MeHg bioaccumulation in 3,241 juvenile and adult amphibians during 2017-2021. We sampled 26 populati

Mercury (Hg) exposure is increasing in terrestrial birds; however, studies on its sources are scarce. In the present study, we elucidated the food composition of green-backed tit nestlings from three urban forest parks (CPL, AHL, and LCG) using live videography observation (LVO). Furthermore, the daily dietary intakes of inorganic Hg (IHg) (MDIIHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) (MDIMeHg) were determined using the Bayesian isotope mixing model (BIMM) to uncover the nestlings' specific dietary Hg contribution. Both LVO and BIMM indicated that Lepidoptera (primarily caterpillar) constituted the primar

Mercury (Hg) is one of the major pollutants in the environment, which requires effective countermeasures to manage its risk to both human health and the ecosystem. The antagonistic effect of selenium (Se) against methyl mercury (MeHg) and HgCl2 was evaluated using parent and offspring Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) in this study. Through designated acute exposure of 24 h, our results showed that both MeHg and HgCl2 induced dose-dependent reproductive toxicity, including increased germ cell apoptosis, decrease in the number of oocytes, brood size, and sperm activation. The increased germ c

Knowledge of the uptake and fate of mercury (Hg) compounds in biota is important in understanding the global cycling of Hg and its transfer pathways through food chains. In this study, we analysed total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in 117 livers of Scottish birds of prey that were found across Scotland and submitted for post-mortem examination through the Raptor Health Scotland project between 2009 and 2019. Statistical comparisons focussed on six species (barn owl, Tyto alba; Eurasian common buzzard, Buteo buteo; golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos; hen harrier, Circus c

The total mercury content in 112 fishery products, purchased from Osaka city during 2013-2018, was measured using a heating vaporization mercury analyzer. The average total mercury content in all tuna processed products was found out to be 0.115 μg/g (median=0.070 μg/g). Notably, albacore tuna exhibited the highest mercury content with an average concentration of 0.301 μg/g (median=0.296 μg/g). The total mercury concentration of the fishery products, except processed tuna and Kezuribushi (comprising shavings of dried and smoked mackerel, sardine, as well as horse mackerel), was generally low (

Methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin, can be formed, migrated and transformed in environmental compartments, accompanying with unique mass-dependent and mass-independent fractionation of mercury (Hg). These Hg isotope fractionation signals have great potential to probe the transformation and transport of MeHg in aquatic environments. However, the majority of studies to date have focused on total Hg isotopic composition, with less attention to the isotopic fractionation of MeHg due to technical difficulties in analysis, which severely hinders the understanding of MeHg isotopic fractionatio

Mercury (Hg) can be converted to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) by certain microbes typically in anaerobic environments, threatening human health due to its bioaccumulation in food webs. However, it is unclear whether and how Hg can be methylated in legacy aerobic uplands with increasing water. Here, we conducted a series of incubation experiments to investigate the effects of increased water content on MeHg production in two typical upland soils (i.e., long-term and short-term use). Results showed that marked MeHg production occurred in water-saturated upland soils, which was strongly correl

Effective biomarkers are necessary to better understand the human mercury (Hg) exposure levels. However, mismatched biomarker sampling method causes extra uncertainty in assessing the risk of Hg exposure. To compare the differences between hair and fingernail, and further understand the excretion rates of methylmercury (MeHg) and inorganic mercury (IHg) via hair and fingernails, the total mercury (THg), MeHg, and IHg concentrations in paired hair and fingernail samples were investigated through paired samples collected from two typical mining areas, Wanshan mercury mine area (WMMA) and Hezhang

Marine predators are monitored as indicators of pollution, but such trends can be complicated by variation in diet. Glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) have experienced a dietary shift over the past century, from mainly marine to including more terrestrial/freshwater inputs, with unknown impacts on mercury (Hg) trends. We examined 109-year trends in total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in glaucous-winged gull feathers (1887-1996) from the Salish Sea. Adult flank feathers had higher MeHg concentrations than immature feathers, and males head feathers had higher THg c

Atmospheric elemental mercury (Hg(0)) enters plant stomata, becomes oxidized, and is then transferred to annual growth rings providing an archive of air Hg(0) concentrations. To better understand the processes of Hg accumulation and translocation, the foliage of quaking aspen and Austrian pine were exposed to Hg(0), and methylmercury (MeHg) or Me198Hg via roots, in controlled exposures during the summer. Isotopic measurements demonstrated, in a laboratory setting, that the natural mass-dependent fractionation observed was the same as that measured in field studies, with the lighter isotopes be

Methylmercury (MeHg) is mainly produced by anaerobic δ-proteobacteria such as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). However, mercury bio-methylation has also been found to occur in the aerobic soil of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Using γ-proteobacterial TGR bacteria (TGRB) and δ-proteobacterial Desulfomicrobium escambiense strains, the efficiency of mercury methylation and demethylation was evaluated using an isotope tracer technique. Kinetics simulation showed that the bacterial Hg methylation rate (km) of TGRB3 was 4.36 × 10-9 pg·cell-1·h-1, which was significantly lower than that of D. esca

Uptake of the neurotoxicant monomethylmercury (MeHg) from fish and marine mammals continues to present a public health concern in Canada and elsewhere. However, fish and marine mammals are key diet items contributing to food security for some Indigenous populations in Canada. Mercury (Hg) exposure is estimated assuming that 100% of Hg is methylated, that 100% will be absorbed by the consumer and that cooking does not affect MeHg concentrations. Some of these assumptions do not correspond to our current state of knowledge. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of additional variables o

Recreational fishers often consume their catch, which may expose them to environmental contaminants. However, targeted risk assessment for exceeding the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of a specific contaminant is often lacking, as specific data on the extent of fishing, consumption rates, and contamination of the caught seafood is needed. This study examined recreational fishing for nephrops (Nephrops norvegicus) at several different locations in Western Norway to identify important risk factors. The combination of a field survey to examine actual catches, interviews of recreational fishers abo

Biomonitoring methylmercury (MeHg) exposure is problematic in resource-limited settings and with difficult-to-access populations where traditional biomarker approaches present logistical, economic, and ethical issues. The present study aimed to validate the use of dried blood spots (DBS) to assess MeHg exposure in a real-world contaminated field setting. Whole-blood and DBS samples were collected from electronic waste workers (n = 20) from Agbogbloshie (Ghana) in 2017, and DBS were also artificially created in the laboratory using the field-collected blood. Whole-blood MeHg concentrations aver

Experimental studies have indicated that electrophilic mercury forms (e.g., methylmercury, MeHg+) can accelerate the breakage of selenocysteine in vitro. Particularly, in 2009, Khan et al. (Environ. Toxicol. Chem. 2009, 28, 1567-1577) proposed a mechanism for the degradation of a free methylmercury selenocysteinate complex that was theoretically supported by Asaduzzaman et al. (Inorg. Chem. 2010, 50, 2366-2372). However, little is known about the fate of methylmercury selenocysteinate complexes embedded in an enzyme, especially in conditions of oxidative stress in which methylmercury target en

A selective method for preconcentration and determination of methylmercury (MeHg) and inorganic mercury (iHg) in natural water samples at the ng L-1 level has been developed. The method involves adsorption of Hg species into a 3D printed metal scavenger and sequential elution with acidic thiourea solutions before ICP-MS determination. Experimental parameters affecting the preconcentration of MeHg and iHg such as the sample matrix, effect of the flow rate on adsorption, eluent composition, and elution mode have been studied in detail. The obtained method detection limits, considering the precon

Total-Hg (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in rice grains were measured to understand the MeHg accumulation process. Rice plants were cultivated in Hg2+-spiked non-contaminated soils in experimental pots at three different places. Although soil MeHg concentrations in the pots changed significantly and individually during the rice-growing season, T-Hg concentration of brown rice grain was high at high soil MeHg concentration. In addition, there was no significant variation in T-Hg concentration in brown rice grains from individual panicles or among panicles obtained from the same p

Bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in rice grains has been an emerging issue of human health, but the mechanism of bioaccumulation is still poorly understood. Mercury (Hg) isotope measurements are powerful tools for tracing the sources and biogeochemical cycles of Hg in the environment. In this study, MeHg compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) was developed in paddy soil and rice plants to trace the biogeochemical cycle of Hg in a paddy ecosystem during the whole rice-growing season. Isotopic fractionation was analyzed separately for MeHg and inorganic Hg (IHg). Results showed

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a bioaccumulative neurotoxin produced by certain sulfate-reducing bacteria and other anaerobic microorganisms. Because microorganisms differ in their capacity to methylate mercury, the abundance and distribution of methylating populations may determine MeHg production in the environment. We compared rates of MeHg production and the distribution of hgcAB genes in epilimnetic sediments from a freshwater lake that were experimentally amended with sulfate levels from 7 to 300 mg L-1. The most abundant hgcAB sequences were associated with clades of Methanomicrobia, sulfate-r
