New ear sensor for mobile, continuous and long term pulse oximetry.

Pulse oximetry is a valuable monitoring technology used at present mainly for immobile patients. The reason for the limitation concerning the user's mobility is due principally to unsuitable sensors and sensor locations. This is particularly the case with finger sensors, which tend to work best in respect to signal quality i.e. modulation depth, but are quite susceptible to motion artifacts. In order to achieve mobility for pulse oximetry monitoring, an ear canal sensor was developed. This area was chosen based on the assumption that intensive movement and acceleration of this part of the body

Implementing an Activity and Mobility Promotion Approach to Improve Patient Mobility.

BACKGROUND: A decline in patient mobility is a common occurrence following hospital admission, even with short, uncomplicated stays. Low mobility is known to result in a variety of adverse outcomes, including functional decline, especially for the vulnerable older population. PURPOSE: Strategies to promote mobility in hospitalized patients are crucial to improving outcomes and reducing associated costs. The aim of this quality improvement project was to implement the Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion (JH-AMP) program at a large safety-net hospital, assess the feasibility of implem

Evaluation of Neuromuscular Disease in Adults Presenting with Dyspnea.

Neuromuscular disorders in adults can present with a wide array of clinical features and vary from acute life-threatening complications such as respiratory failure to slow progressive weakness and comorbidity. Common to most of these disorders are symptoms of weakness and dyspnea. Many patients with occult neuromuscular disorders will be evaluated for underlying cardiac and pulmonary disease by primary care and subspecialty providers and can experience delays in diagnosis due to challenges in attaining early neurological testing and recognizing vague symptoms as potentially arising from the ne

Inclusive crowd evacuation modeling under heterogeneous mobility constraints.

Emergency evacuations in built environments pose significant challenges for individuals with disabilities, yet traditional simulation models often fail to account for heterogeneous mobility needs. While considerable advances have been made in pedestrian dynamic modeling, a critical gap persists in the realistic incorporation of disability-specific movement limitations and environmental barriers. This paper presents an inclusive evacuation simulation framework based on an extended social force model, explicitly integrating wheelchair users and visually impaired individuals. The model modifies a

Adding a Mobility Champion to an Existing Progressive Mobility Protocol: An Evidence-Based Initiative.

PURPOSE: This evidence-based initiative assessed the effect of adding a mobility champion to an existing progressive mobility protocol on functional decline in hospitalized older adults as evidenced by recommended discharge to home versus an inpatient rehabilitation facility. METHOD: Older adults admitted from home to a 47-bed medical-surgical telemetry unit who were assessed as ambulatory, either independently or with assistance (Level 5), and with a progressive mobility order in the electronic health record were included in the initiative. Patient care associates who volunteered to be mobil

Travel patterns of patients seeking cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic: Multi-centre cohort study in Osaka, Japan.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, provision of equal access to cancer care is intended to be achieved via secondary medical areas (SMAs). However, the percentage of patients receiving care within the residential area varies by SMA in Osaka Prefecture. We aimed to assess the effect size of factors associated with patient mobility, and whether patient mobility was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Records of patients diagnosed with stomach, colorectal, lung, breast, cervical, oesophageal, liver or pancreatic cancer during 2019-2020 were extracted from multi-centre hospital-based cancer registry d

Development of a Home-Based Telerehabilitation Service Delivery Protocol for Wheelchair Seating and Mobility Within the Veterans Health Administration.

INTRODUCTION: The provision of seating and wheeled mobility devices is a complex process that requires trained professionals and multiple appointments throughout the service delivery process. However, this can be inconvenient and burdensome for individuals with mobility limitations or for individuals who live in rural areas. Rural areas often present unique difficulties regarding the provision of healthcare services including lengthy travel times to medical facilities and lack of specialized providers and medical technology. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of…

Using multiple imputation and intervention-based scenarios to project the mobility of older adults.

BACKGROUND: Projections of the development of mobility limitations of older adults are needed for evidence-based policy making. The aim of this study was to generate projections of mobility limitations among older people in the United States, England, and Finland. METHODS: We applied multiple imputation modelling with bootstrapping to generate projections of stair climbing and walking limitations until 2026. A physical activity intervention producing a beneficial effect on self-reported activities of daily living measures was identified in a comprehensive literature search and incorporated in…

Perceived walking difficulties in Parkinson's disease - predictors and changes over time.

BACKGROUND: People with Parkinson's disease (PD) have described their walking difficulties as linked to activity avoidance, social isolation, reduced independence and quality of life. There is a knowledge gap regarding predictive factors of perceived walking difficulties in people with PD. Such knowledge could be useful when designing intervention studies. This study aimed to investigate how perceived walking difficulties evolve over a 3-year period in people with PD. A specific aim was to identify predictive factors of perceived walking difficulties. METHODS: One hundred forty-eight people w
