BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance poses a growing challenge to malaria vector control in Kenya and around the world. Following evidence of associations between the mosquito microbiota and insecticide resistance, the microbiota of Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (s.s.) from Tulukuyi village, Bungoma, Kenya, with differing permethrin resistance profiles were comparatively characterized.
METHODS: Using the CDC bottle bioassay, 133 2-3 day-old, virgin, non-blood fed female F1 progeny of field-caught An. gambiae s.s. were exposed to five times (107.5 µg/ml) the discriminating dose of permethrin.

The transmission of Plasmodium parasites in residual foci is currently a major roadblock for malaria elimination. Human activities and behavior, along with outdoor biting mosquitoes with opportunistic feeding preferences are the main causes of the inefficacy of the main vector control interventions, long lasting insecticide-impregnated nets and insecticide residual spraying. Several strategies to abate or repel outdoor biting mosquito vectors are currently being researched, but the impact of insecticide resistance on the efficacy of these and current indoor-applied insecticides requires furthe

Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes are prolific vectors of arboviruses that are a global threat to human and animal health. Increased globalization and ease of travel have facilitated the worldwide dissemination of these mosquitoes and the viruses they transmit. To assess disease risk, we determined the frequency of arboviruses in western Kenyan counties bordering an area of high arboviral activity. In addition to pathogenic viruses, insect-specific flaviviruses (ISFs), some of which are thought to impair the transmission of specific pathogenic arboviruses, were also evaluated.

OBJECTIVE: In Brazil, the most common method of controlling outbreaks of arbovirus is by the use of chemical sprays, which kill the insect vector, Aedes aegypti. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of Ae. aegypti to the insecticide, malathion, in situ. The location of this study was the municipality of Foz do Iguaçu, in the state of Paraná, Brazil.
METHODS: Ultra-low-volume (ULV) fogging equipment was used, by vehicle, to apply the insecticide in situ, and mosquito populations after treatment were compared with those of control areas. The resistance of strains coll

Except for yellow fever and encephalitis B, effective vaccines remain unavailable against most infectious diseases, and prevention is based mainly upon vector control and chemoprophylaxis. The increasing resistance of, respectively, mosquitoes and parasites to insecticides and drugs is thus a matter of great concern. The best approach is to combine chemoprophylaxis and entomoprophylaxis, that is, to use several methods of vector control at different levels to reduce the risk of infection and illness from these infectious diseases.

A wind-sensitive vane apparatus was designed and implemented specifically to accommodate the attachment of otherwise unidirectional insecticide treatment cages used in ground ultra-low volume mosquito adulticide field tests. This cage support system is useful in keeping the potential West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis vector Culex quinquefasciatus caged mosquitoes oriented into the wind during field efficacy tests. Testing capacity for resistance surveillance was tripled during the 2005 season, and more reliable results were achieved as a consequence.

Surveillance is a critical component of any dengue prevention and control program. There is an increasing effort to use drones in mosquito control surveillance. Due to the novelty of drones, data are scarce on the impact and acceptance of their use in the communities to collect health-related data. The use of drones raises concerns about the protection of human privacy. Here, we show how willingness to be trained and acceptance of drone use in tech-savvy communities can help further discussions in mosquito surveillance. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Malaysia, Mexico, and Turkey to a…

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus, are major vectors of globally significant diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Since 2013, Ae. aegypti populations have rapidly expanded in California, making control efforts difficult due to their widespread, small-scale breeding sites and strong adaptation to urban environments.
METHODS: Remote sensing technologies, coupled with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), offer innovative solutions for mosquito surveillance and control. However, understanding the environmental drivers of mosquito abundance, pa

Dengue fever is an acute mosquito-borne disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. In this paper, dengue fever outbreaks in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province and Jinghong, Yunnan Province from July 15 to November 20, 2019 were studied to explore the effects of temperature differences and imported cases on epidemic development patterns. In response to the practical issue of missing mosquito vector data, the feasibility of using meteorological data-driven dynamic model to obtain mosquito vector data was initially validated. Cross-correlation analysis was then used to assess the strong correlation betw

UNLABELLED: Dengue virus cases are on the rise globally, and strategies to control its primary vector, the mosquito Aedes aegypti, represent a promising approach. However, the interaction between virus serotypes and genotypes with Ae. aegypti is poorly characterized in terms of life-history traits related to vector capacity and mosquito disease tolerance. Here, we infected Ae. aegypti with two phylogenetically distant strains of dengue virus serotype 4 genotype II: a laboratory-adapted strain, DENV4-TVP/360, and a recent clinical strain isolated from southern Brazil, DENV4-LRV 13/422. Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) or a combination of the two has become alternative promising vector control approaches. In order to apply these approaches, the targeted mosquitoes need to be sterilized and released. So far, the irradiation of mosquitoes has been conducted at the pupae or adult stages. In this study, we investigated the possibility of applying X-ray irradiation at the egg stage and also assessed the effect on the development and sterility of both wild-type and Wolbachia trans-infected Aedes aegypti mosquito vectors. The eggs of both wild-type

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka has experienced severe dengue epidemics in recent years, despite the extensive vector control measures taken. Therefore, it is necessary to find sustainable vector control strategies against dengue. Novel vector control tools need to be tested for the feasibility of applying them against local vectors. Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an increasingly popular vector control technique which has been adopted by many countries to suppress insect pest populations and is being tested for dengue vectors.
METHODS: In this study, SIT was developed for Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 18

BACKGROUND: The core vector control tools used to reduce malaria prevalence are currently long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), and indoor residual spraying (IRS). These interventions are hindered by insecticide resistance and behavioural adaptation by malaria vectors. Thus, for effective interruption of malaria transmission, there is a need to develop novel vector control interventions and technologies to address the above challenges. Larviciding using drones was experimented as an innovative tool that could complement existing indoor interventions to control malaria.
METHODS: A non-random

The health impact of mosquito-borne diseases causes a huge burden on human societies. Recent vector control campaigns have resulted in promising declines in incidence and prevalence of these diseases, notably malaria, but resistance to insecticides and drugs are on the rise, threatening to overturn these gains. Moreover, several vector-borne diseases have re-emerged, requiring prompt and effective response measures. To improve and properly implement vector control interventions, the behaviour of the vectors must be well understood with detailed examination of mosquito flight being an essential

Vector-borne diseases transmitted by mosquitoes cause globally important diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and filariasis. The incidence of these diseases can be reduced through mosquito control programs but these control programs currently rely on synthetic insecticides that can impact the environment, and has selected widespread mosquito resistance. Environment friendly and biodegradable natural insecticides discovered in plants offer an alternative approach to mosquito control. Here, we investigated extracts from root or aerial parts of Chicory (Cichorium intybus) and wormwood (Artemi…
