[Clinical evaluation of regurgitant blood flow by rapid cine magnetic resonance imaging in patients with valvular heart disease].

The clinical usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for evaluating regurgitant blood flow in patients with valvular heart disease was studied. The study subjects comprised three healthy volunteers and nine patients with valvular heart disease (aortic regurgitation 3, mitral regurgitation 2, tricuspid regurgitation 2, and pulmonary regurgitation 2). Five were men and seven were women, ranging in age from 31 to 85 years. Valvular heart disease was diagnosed by two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography. MRI was performed using a 1.5 tesla super-conductive magnet system (MAGNETOM, Siemens A

Role of the medial parieto-occipital cortex in the control of reaching and grasping movements.

The medial parieto-occipital cortex is a central node in the dorsomedial visual stream. Recent physiological studies in the macaque monkey have demonstrated that the medial parieto-occipital cortex contains two areas, the visual area V6 and the visuomotor area V6A. Area V6 is a retinotopically organized visual area that receives form and motion information directly from V1 and is heavily connected with the other areas of the dorsal visual stream, including V6A. Area V6A is a bimodal visual/somatosensory area that elaborates visual information such as form, motion and space suitable for the con

How current extensor tendon repair practices differ from expert recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to understand the current real-world status of extensor tendon repairs with data through an international survey, thus providing information to guide continuing education, design of courses and global standardization efforts. METHODS: Ten hand surgeons were surveyed from each of five countries in America, Asia and Europe. The survey participants - all practising hand surgeons - were asked to answer multiple choice questions regarding their extensor tendon repair surgery and therapy. RESULTS: The survey revealed remarkable discrepancies or 'distances' between th

Comparison of radiation sensitivity for three cell lines as measured by the cloning assay and the micro-nucleus test.

The correlation between cell killing and the induction of micro-nuclei was studied for three cell lines after treatment with gamma radiation to investigate whether the frequency of micro-nucleated cells can be used to determine the radiation sensitivity of a cell type. R1 rat rhabdomyosarcoma cells showed a higher sensitivity for the induction of proliferative death than RUC rat ureter carcinoma cells and V79 Chinese hamster cells which had a similar radiation sensitivity. The frequencies of micro-nucleated cells were measured at 48 hours after the treatment. It was determined by time-lapse ci

Using electronic storybooks to support word learning in children with severe language impairments.

Novel word learning is reported to be problematic for children with severe language impairments (SLI). In this study, we tested electronic storybooks as a tool to support vocabulary acquisition in SLI children. In Experiment 1, 29 kindergarten SLI children heard four e-books each four times: (a) two stories were presented as video books with motion pictures, music, and sounds, and (b) two stories included only static illustrations without music or sounds. Two other stories served as the control condition. Both static and video books were effective in increasing knowledge of unknown words, but …

Measurement of facial soft tissue mobility in man.

OBJECTIVE: The assessment of facial mobility is a key element in the treatment of patients with facial motor deficits. In this study, we explored the utility of a three-dimensional tracking system in the measurement of facial movements. METHODS AND RESULTS: First, the three-dimensional movement of potentially stable facial soft-tissue, headcap, and dental landmarks was measured with respect to a fixed space frame. Based on the assumption that the dental landmarks are stable, their motion during a series of standardized facial animations was subtracted from that of the facial and headcap landm

Takotsubo Syndrome After Pacemaker Implantation: A Case Report and Literature Review.

A 78-year-old male patient with complete atrioventricular block underwent an uncomplicated pacemaker implantation. After 24 h, he presented acute chest pain, dyspnea, ST-segment-elevation in the anterior leads, left ventricular apical ballooning, and an ejection fraction of 35%. His coronary angiogram was normal. Within 2 days, his symptoms and electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities disappeared, while wall motion abnormalities recovered after 6 weeks. A diagnosis of takotsubo syndrome (TTS) was made. Pacemaker implantation has been described as a potential trigger for TTS. The clinical picture

Direct Probing of a Large Spin-Orbit Coupling in the FeSe Superconducting Monolayer on STO.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a fundamental physical interaction, which describes how the electrons' spin couples to their orbital motion. It is the source of a vast variety of fascinating phenomena in nanostructures. Although in most theoretical descriptions of high-temperature superconductivity SOC has been neglected, including this interaction can, in principle, revise the microscopic picture. Here by preforming energy-, momentum-, and spin-resolved spectroscopy experiments we demonstrate that while probing the dynamic charge response of the FeSe monolayer on strontium titanate, a prototype

Idiopathic inferior rectus myositis: A rare cause of diplopia and a therapeutic success.

Orbital myositis is a rare inflammatory condition of a single or multiple extraocular muscles. It usually presents with unilateral or sequential bilateral sub-acute eye swelling, orbital pain, restricted eye movement, and redness of the eyelid. The swelling of extraocular muscles may lead to limited range of motion that produces blurred vision or diplopia. In this article, we report a male patient with idiopathic inferior rectus myositis presenting with diplopia who was managed successfully by medical and surgical intervention. Acute onset of diplopia with eye pain or limited extraocular movem

Orbital hemangiopericytoma--a case report.

A 50-year-old male presented with progressive proptosis in the right eye for 10 years. Decreased visual acuity to hand-motion level was also noted. Orbital computed tomography revealed a large homogenously enhanced mass lesion in the right retrobulbar region with optic nerve compression. The remainder of the ocular examination was normal, except for right mature cataract. The tumor was completely removed through lateral orbitotomy. Histologic findings showed a picture of hemangiopericytoma. One month after cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation in the right eye, the patient had

Coupled flexural optomechanical cavities with engineered nanomechanical interconnects.

Integrated nanomechanical circuits require compact and predictable ways to read out, confine, and connect mechanical motion across multiple nanoscale elements. This challenge is particularly acute for megahertz flexural modes, whose large mechanical response and nonlinear dynamics are attractive for optomechanics, sensing, and signal processing, but whose extended nature makes local confinement and coupling difficult within dense devices. Here we demonstrate an optomechanical nanobeam platform in which optical transduction and mechanical connectivity are both engineered lithographically. Trans

GPCR large-amplitude dynamics by 19F-NMR of aprepitant bound to the neurokinin 1 receptor.

Comparisons of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) complexes with agonists and antagonists based on X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy structure determinations show differences in the width of the orthosteric ligand binding groove over the range from 0.3 to 2.9 Å. Here, we show that there are transient structure fluctuations with amplitudes up to at least 6 Å. The experiments were performed with the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R), a GPCR of class A that is involved in inflammation, pain, and cancer. We used 19F-NMR observation of aprepitant, which is an approved drug that targets N

Micrographia, much beyond the writer's hand.

INTRODUCTION: This review on micrographia aims to draw the clinician's attention to non-Parkinsonian etiologies, provide clues to differential diagnosis, and summarize current knowledge on the phenomenology, etiology, and mechanisms underlying micrographia. METHODS: A systematic review of the existing literature was performed. RESULTS: Micrographia, namely small sized handwriting has long been attributed to Parkinson's disease. However, it has often been observed as part of the clinical picture of additional neurodegenerative disorders, sometimes antedating the motor signs, or following foca

[Hallux rigidus].

Osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint is termed hallux rigidus. Clinical symptoms are expressed by a painful limitation of range of motion, finally leading to an eponymous total stiffness of the joint. Conservative treatment includes drug therapy, physical therapy and orthotic devices like insoles and footwear modification. After making use of the whole range of conservative treatment options, several surgical techniques are available, which should be considered depending on stage, patient's activity level and possible comorbid diseases. Open and arthroscopic techniques address

Interaction between colour and motion in human vision.

There is a wealth of anatomical and psychological evidence which suggests that when people look at an object in the visual world, its various attributes such as colour, 'form', motion and depth are analysed by separate channels in the visual system. If so, how are these attributes put back together again to create a unified picture of the object? And if the object moves rapidly, how is perfect perceptual synchrony maintained between different features on its surface, if it is indeed true that they are being processed separately? Our evidence suggests that the visual system extracts certain con

Orthostatic postural activity disorders recorded by statokinesimeter in post-concussional syndromes: oculomoter aspect.

The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the influence of the mesencephalic oculomotor system regulation on orthostatic postural regulation. The body at rest is never immobile but it swings continuosly. The amplitudes and the frequencies of body sway give an indication of the function of the different sensorimotor loops which are involved in body balance. An apparatus, the statokinesimeter, allows us to record these motions by means of displacement of the body's centre of gravity with respect to the centre of the basis. In the case of head or cervical injuries, the brain stem is often implica
