The use of the logistic model in space motion sickness prediction.

The one-equation and the two-equation logistic models were used to predict tested subjects' susceptibility to motion sickness in KC-135 parabolic flights using data from other ground-based motion sickness tests. A data set containing data from 6 provocative tests, 2 vestibular function tests, and 1 motion sickness experience questionnaire from 162 subjects was used in this study. The prediction results from the logistic models were compared with those from the previously-used Bayes linear discriminant analysis procedures. The results based on this data set show that the logistic models correct…

[Labyrinthine and extralabyrinthine mechanisms of the development of motion sickness in weightlessness].

This paper describes an important problem of aerospace medicine, i. e. space motion sickness. The review surveys relevant Soviet and foreign publications. On their basis, including their own data, the authors discuss possible mechanisms of the sickness symptom-complex in the weightless state. The authors put forth their own ideas concerning current hypotheses of space motion sickness and discuss potential applicability of the theoretical concepts with respect to the prevention of this adverse symptom-complex. The authors describe selected outlines in the study of mechanisms of space motion sic…

[Participation of endogenous opioid peptides in the pathogenesis of motion sickness].

Investigations were performed with 19 healthy male volunteers to specify a possible role of endogenous opioid peptides in the pathogenesis of motion sickness. For this purpose the test subjects were administered naloxone, a specific antagonist of opiates and opioids, before rotation and during rotation in a BU-4 armchair at a rate of 30 rpm. In addition, the content of beta-endorphin in blood plasma was measured. It was discovered that naloxone exerts both prophylactic and therapeutic effects as regards the simulated motion sickness. In this respect it was more efficacious than the reference d…

Appropriateness of kaolin consumption as an index of motion sickness in the rat.

The appropriateness of kaolin consumption, one form of pica, as an index of motion sickness in the rat was examined. Unlike other motion sickness indices, the use of kaolin consumption results in a bitonic function across daily rotation sessions. This bitonic function is not predicted from any theory of motion sickness (viz., the Sensory Rearrangement Theory), rather an inverse relationship should exist between the severity of motion sickness and repeated exposure to the effective motion (i.e., habituation). The results of Experiments 1 and 2 support the continued use of kaolin consumption as …

An appraisal of the value of vitamin B12 in the prevention of motion sickness.

Unpublished reports have suggested that hydroxycobalamin (B12, i.m.) prevents motion sickness. Some biomedical evidence supports this contention in that B12 influences the metabolism of histidine and choline; dietary precursors to neurotransmitters with established roles in motion sickness. Susceptibility to motion sickness was evaluated after B12 (1000 micrograms, i.m.). Subjects initially completed vestibular function and motion sickness susceptibility tests to establish normal vestibular function. The experimental motion stressor was a modified coriolis sickness susceptibility test. Subject…

Dependence of motion sickness in automobiles on the direction of linear acceleration.

Thirty-eight normal volunteers were tested in an ambulance car while being accelerated in one of the following positions: (1) sitting upright facing forward in the car, (2) lying supine on a stretcher head forward, (3) supine position head backward. Consecutive short period of negative horizontal acceleration (0.7-0.95 g) were achieved by brisk braking manoeuvres of the car, followed by weak reacceleration (0.15 g). Motion sickness symptoms were observed and recorded after each experiment using a special motion sickness scaling index which was weighted according to the strength of any particul…

Anisotropy in motion sickness susceptibility during longitudinal and lateral motion while seated on a car seat.

Motion sickness is critical in automated vehicle design, particularly as horizontal accelerations become more variable and pronounced. However, even within horizontal translation, whether sickness sensitivity differs between longitudinal and lateral directions remains unclear. To investigate this, we conducted a within-subjects experiment with 21 participants exposed to repeated sinusoidal accelerations while seated in a car seat without visual cues, restrained by seat belt and neck brace. Each participant experienced one combination of two acceleration levels and multiple frequencies (0.15, 0…

Axis rotation and visually induced motion sickness: the role of combined roll, pitch, and yaw motion.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is a well-known phenomenon in aviation and in virtual environments such as simulators or computer games. The severity of MS is thought to be due to the amount of sensory conflict, which should increase with the complexity of the simulated motion. The present study focused on the direction and complexity of simulated body rotations in the genesis and severity of visually induced MS. METHODS: Three simulated rollercoaster rides including translational movement in the fore-aft axis and additional rotational motion either in pitch only, along the pitch and roll ax…

Motion sickness incidence: distribution of time to first emesis and comparison of some complex motion conditions.

A statistical mixture model is used to fit time-to-emesis data. The Weibull probability distribution is shown to provide a good fit for those subjects who either become sick or withdraw from the experiment within 2 h. The second part of the mixture accounts for those subjects who neither quit nor vomit within 2 h. The log-normal probability model is shown to give a poorer fit to the data and figures showing the relative fits of the estimated Weibull and log-normal distributions are provided. A nonparametric test is used to compare the five motion conditions of the Correlation Study. That test

Driving comfort and motion sickness incidence in an active tilting vehicle.

Engaging in non-driving related tasks while using self-driving vehicles will increase the risk of motion sickness symptoms. Therefore, future on-board technological solutions should mitigate motion sickness. This study examines comfort and motion sickness in an active tilting vehicle, which aligns the passenger to the inside of the curve, increasing motion compensation. Subjective and physiological data from 22 participants were collected. A reduction in lateral acceleration experienced by 29% was detected in slalom and traffic circles, but subjective evaluation suggests that the active tilt i…

Validating models of sensory conflict and perception for motion sickness prediction.

The human motion perception system has long been linked to motion sickness through state estimation conflict terms. However, to date, the extent to which available perception models are able to predict motion sickness, or which of the employed perceptual mechanisms are of most relevance to sickness prediction, has not been studied. In this study, the subjective vertical model, the multi-sensory observer model and the probabilistic particle filter model were all validated for their ability to predict motion perception and sickness, across a large set of motion paradigms of varying complexity fr…

Resting-state functional connectivity predicts recovery from visually induced motion sickness.

Movies depicting certain types of motion often provoke uncomfortable symptoms similar to motion sickness, termed visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). VIMS generally evolves slowly during the viewing of a motion stimulus and, when the stimulus is removed, the recovery proceeds over time. Recent human neuroimaging studies have provided new insights into the neural bases of the evolution of VIMS. In contrast, no study has investigated the neural correlates of the recovery from VIMS. Study of the recovery process is critical for the development of a way to promote recovery and could provide fu…
