The incidence of systemic fungal infection has been increasing during the last two decades. Candida and Aspergillus spp. are the classical opportunistic pathogens. Rare fungi, such as Mucor, Rhizopus, Fusarium, Trichosporon, Paecilomyces, Alternaria, Cladosporium and Pseudoallescheria, are emerging as cause of systemic fungal infection in the immunocompromised host. For more than 40 years Amphotericin B has been the gold standard of antifungal treatment because of its broad spectrum comprising yeasts, dimorphic fungi and moulds. Its nephrotoxicity has led to the development of lipid-associated…

Pneumothorax caused by the rupture of a mycetoma into the pleural space is rarely reported in patients undergoing intensive cytotoxic therapy for hematologic malignancies. We reviewed 46 episodes of mycetoma that developed in 43 patients undergoing antineoplastic therapy; six (13%) of these episodes were further complicated by the occurrence of pneumothorax that developed after bone marrow recovery with return to normal granulocyte count. Etiologic agents included Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus fumigatus plus Blastoschizomyces capitatus, and Mucor (one case each). No pathogen was detected …

Phycomycosis is the preferred terminology to define a fungal disease which may be devastating and fatal. It is caused by a nonseptate hyphae, class phycomycetes and genus (Rhizopus, Mucor, Absidia). Phycomycosis in man is usually associated with debilitating diseases such as: diabetes mellitus, leukemia and immunosuppressive conditions. The cephalic phycomycosis has two forms: 1. rhino-orbital cerebral which may be fatal, and 2. rhino-paranasal sinuses form which usually has a benign clinical course. From 1943 to 1967, only 45 cases of the cephalic form were described with a mortality rate of …

Mucormycosis is an invasive, life-threatening fungal infection that mainly affects immunocompromised hosts. We collected data of pediatric mucormycosis cases from all 7 Greek Hematology-Oncology Departments for the years 2008-2017. Six cases of invasive mucormycosis diagnosed during treatment for malignancies were included in the study. In 4 children (66%) mucormycosis occurred within the first 20 days after diagnosis of the underlying disease. Two cases were classified as proven mucormycosis and 4 as probable. The most frequently recorded species was Rhizopus arrhizus (2 patients), followed b…

Mucormycosis is an emerging infection caused by pathogenic filamentous fungal species belonging to the Order Mucorales. Mortality associated with mucormycosis is significantly high in patients with compromised immunity. As cell wall is the first fungal component to interact with the host immune system, we characterized cell wall organization and composition of the three most prevalent pathogenic species of Mucorales, Rhizopus arrhizus, Mucor circinelloides, and Lichtheimia corymbifera and studied their immunomodulatory potential. Staining and lectin-/immunolabeling indicated that the spores an…

Mucormycosis (formerly zygomycosis) is a life-threatening opportunistic mycosis that infects a broad range of hosts with qualitative or quantitative defects in innate immunity, including patients with severe neutropenia, recipients of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, and those with iron overload states. Mucormycosis has recently emerged as breakthrough sinopulmonary infection in hematologic patients and recipients of transplantation being on antifungal prophylaxis with Aspergillus-active antifungals that lack activity against Mucorale…

Infections caused by filamentous fungi represent a growing problem in human health, especially in patients with burns injuries or immunocompromised. Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antimicrobial known for its bacterial efficacy, although its antifungal action has been poorly explored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of silver sulfadiazine, in its commercial forms (Platsul-A® cream, spray, and gauze) and in its pure form, against strains of Rhizopus spp., Fusarium spp., Alternaria spp., and Mucor spp. Agar diffusion assays and determination of the minimum in…

Collagenolytic proteases have attracted increasing attention due to their ability to hydrolyze collagen and their relevance in biotechnological processes. In this study, a collagenolytic protease produced by Mucor subtilissimus UCP 1262 was characterized through an integrated evaluation of its biochemical properties, thermal-inactivation thermodynamics, and conformational behavior. The enzyme was produced by solid-state fermentation using wheat bran and purified by DEAE-Sephadex A50 ion-exchange chromatography. Optimal collagenolytic activity was observed at pH 7 and 40 °C, and approximately 5…

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare, rapidly progressive and often fatal fungal infection. The rarity of the condition lends itself to unfamiliarity, delayed treatment, and poor outcomes. Diagnosis of fungal infections early enough to enable appropriate treatment occurs in less than half of affected patients.
CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old girl with a history of 15% total body surface area scald burns involving both lower limbs progressed to develop angioinvasive mucormycosis. This further led to a thrombosis of the right external iliac artery and vein and rapidly progressive necrosis of surroun…

This study was conducted to assess factors associated with cutaneous colonization of Mucormycetes in diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. A total of 800 swab samples from 200 participants including 100 diabetics and 100 non-diabetics were collected from four different body sites: (1) the forehead, (2) nasal cavity, (3) hands and (4) feet. Fungal isolation, fungal identification and antibiotic sensitivity tests were performed on the isolates. Overall, 12.0 % of the participants showed Mucormycetes colonization while the commonest fungal isolates were Mucor Species (Spp.). followed by Rhizopus…

A population of 28 immunocompromised hosts with proved pulmonary infections by Candida species (n = 18) or angioinvasive fungal pneumonias (Aspergillus species, n = 7, Mucor species n = 2, Trichosporon capitatum n = 1) were retrospectively examined for any characteristic computed tomographic (CT) pattern. Chest CT examination in angioinvasive fungal pneumonias (AFP) showed in all cases nodules or mass-like infiltrates. The mass/nodules were surrounded by a halo of low attenuation in early scans (n = 3/10) and showed often a peripheral enhancement in 6/8 contrast-enhanced scans. CT abnormalitie…

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis of the central nervous system is an uncommon infection caused by saprophytic or parasitic fungi of the subphylum Mucormycotina and order Mucorales viz. Rhizopus, Mucor, and Rhizomucor. Isolated, chronic involvement of the central nervous system is a rare occurrence. To the best of our knowledge, isolated chronic ventricular involvement in an infant has not been reported previously. Isolated intracerebral mucormycosis is a disease of the immunocompromised patient, and to date only 6 cases have been reported in immunocompetent patients, including 2 pediatric cases.
