Glucocorticoids promote lung cell differentiation and thus enhance surfactant synthesis in the management of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Because they also accelerate differentiation in other targets, glucocorticoids may compromise physiologic responses that operate through specialized fetal-neonatal mechanisms. The current study explores one such process, the capacity to maintain cardiac function during hypoxia, a critical function in light of the hypoxia associated with parturition and with neonatal respiratory distress. Pregnant rats were given 0.05, 0.2, or 0.8 mg/kg of dexameth

BACKGROUND: Maternal nutritional interventions aim to address nutrient deficiencies in pregnancy, a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. How these interventions influence the placenta, which plays a vital role in fetal growth and nutrient supply, is not well understood. This leaves a major gap in understanding how such interventions could influence pregnancy outcomes and fetal health. We hypothesised that nutritional interventions influence placental phenotype, and that these placental changes relate to how successful an intervention is in improving pregnan

Here we report urine-derived cell (UDC) culture and subsequent use for cloning which resulted in the successful development of cloned canine pups, which have remained healthy into adulthood. Bovine UDCs were used in vitro to establish comparative differences between cell sources. UDCs were chosen as a readily available and noninvasive source for obtaining cells. We analyzed the viability of cells stored in urine over time and could consistently culture cells which had remained in urine for 48hrs. Cells were shown to be viable and capable of being transfected with plasmids. Although primarily o

AIM: This study aims to evaluate the association between the duration of cryopreservation and reproductive and neonatal outcomes using a meta-analysis.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase and Medline databases up to October 1, 2025. A total of 17 studies were included in the analysis and compared reproductive/neonatal outcomes between frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) ≤12 vs >12 months post-storage. The meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.3 software.
RESULTS: Shorter storage (≤12 months) was associated with higher odds of live birth rate(OR 1.19,

Adiponectin and leptin are key adipokines that play crucial roles in metabolic regulation and in fetal and neonatal growth. In adults, lower adiponectin/leptin ratio (AdipoQ/Lep) has been suggested as a potential biomarker for metabolic risk. This study aimed to investigate whether the AdipoQ/Lep ratio in fetal blood correlates with the maternal and neonatal phenotypes and whether it holds predictive value for the cardiometabolic risk of the offspring in early life. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) samples were collected at birth, and the concentrations of adiponectin and leptin levels were measured

BACKGROUND: The role of changes in maternal hemoglobin (Hb) across pregnancy on child health and development (CHD) remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between maternal Hb trajectories and CHD outcomes: (a) birth outcomes (birth weight, length, gestational age, preterm, and small for gestational age); (b) child Hb at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months; and (c) motor and mental development at 12 and 24 months and cognitive functioning at age 6-7 years.
METHODS: We used data from a randomized controlled trial (PRECONCEPT) conducted in Vietnam (N = 1,175 women enrolled during preconcept

DNA methylation may link early-life exposures to later obesity risk; however, most studies examine individual CpG sites using commercial arrays that cover < 5% of the genome and often overlook biologically relevant regulatory regions. ETV6::RUNX1-positive pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia frequently has a prenatal origin and follows a two-hit model: a first somatic alteration leads to the formation of the oncogenic fusion gene ETV6::RUNX1 and the generation of a preleukemic clone in utero. Secondary hits after birth are necessary to convert the preleukemic clone into clinically overt leukemia. However, prenatal factors triggering the first hit have not yet been determined. Here, we explore the influence of maternal factors during pregnancy on the prevalence of the ETV6::RUNX1 fusion. To this end, we employed a nested i

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged pregnancies are associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcome. In Sweden, no national guidelines exist for when to induce prolonged pregnancies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Singleton cephalic prolonged pregnancies (defined as ≥ 41+3 gestational weeks) during 2001-2013 (n = 199 770) were identified using the Swedish Medical Birth Register. The maternity units were divided into three groups (tertiles) based on the proportion of pregnancies ≥ 42+3 gestational weeks among all pregnancies ≥ 41+3 weeks. The pregnancy outcome among women delivered at the units with the most e

BACKGROUND: The mammary gland is largely undifferentiated before birth and may be particularly susceptible to intrauterine influences that could increase the risk of cancer through acceleration of cell proliferation or other pregnancy-related processes. Studies of migrant populations, animal data, and limited epidemiological evidence suggest that breast cancer may originate in utero. In a nested case-control study we assessed whether birthweight and other perinatal factors are associated with risk of breast cancer.
METHODS: This case-control study was nested within the cohorts of the two Nurs

This study's objective was to determine the effects of pre-pregnancy obesity induced by a high-fat diet and exposure to circadian-disrupting light-dark phase shifts on birth littler size, pup survival to 24h and growth to lactation day 12, and their relationship to maternal feeding patterns, fecal corticosterone levels, milk composition, and lipid profiles of liver, plasma, mammary gland, and milk. A 2 by 2 factorial designed experiment of female ICR mice assigned to control (CON; 10% fat) or high-fat (HF; 60% fat) and either a 12-hour light-dark (LD) cycle or a chronic jet lag model of 6-hour

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in youth is increasing and in-utero exposure to maternal diabetes is a known risk factor, with higher risk associated with pregestational T2D exposure compared to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) exposure. We hypothesize this differential risk is reflected in DNA methylation (DNAm) changes induced by differential timing of in-utero exposure to maternal diabetes, and that exposure to diabetes throughout pregnancy (T2D) compared to exposure later in development (GDM), induces different DNAm signatures and different T2D risk to offspring. Female exposure to seminal fluid influences multiple aspects of reproductive physiology. We tested the hypothesis that extended exposure to seminal fluid prior to pregnancy provides fertility benefits, as predicted from human studies linking seminal fluid exposure to a reduced incidence of pregnancy disorders. Female mice were co-housed for five months with either vasectomized males (producing seminal plasma but not sperm), vasectomized males without seminal vesicles (producing neither seminal plasma nor sperm), intact males or other females, before mating all females with intact males to asse

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress (OS) is a critical factor in male infertility, where excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) impair sperm quality and DNA integrity. Although physiological ROS levels support sperm maturation, imbalance can trigger oxidative or reductive stress (RS), both harmful to fertility. Thus, empirical antioxidant therapy without confirmed OS may be unwarranted and risk overtreatment.
METHODS: We searched PubMed for original and review articles on OS, RS, antioxidants, redox imbalance, and male infertility, emphasizing mechanisms, diagnostics, therapeutic outcomes, and epig

Embryonic muscle fiber formation determines post-birth muscle fiber totals. The previous research shows SYISL knockout significantly increases muscle fiber numbers and mass in mice, but the mechanism remains unclear. This study confirms that the SYISL gene, maternal gut microbiota, and their interaction significantly affect the number of muscle fibers in mouse embryos through distinct mechanisms, as SYISL knockout alters maternal gut microbiota composition and boosts butyrate levels in embryonic serum. Both fecal microbiota transplantation and butyrate feeding significantly increase muscle fib

Depression during pregnancy is common and the prevalence further increased during the COVID pandemic. Recent findings have shown potential impact of antenatal depression on children's neurodevelopment and behavior, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Nor is it clear whether mild depressive symptoms among pregnant women would impact the developing brain. In this study, 40 healthy pregnant women had their depressive symptoms evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory-II at ~12, ~24, and ~36 weeks of pregnancy, and their healthy full-term newborns underwent a brain MRI without sedation inc
