Following rodent surveys in a rice-growing area of central Thailand where we found Bandicota savilei, B. indica, and Rattus rattus infected with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, we performed a study of pathogenesis of R. tsutsugamushi in laboratory-reared B. savilei. Leishmania aethiopica parasites were inoculated into 11 different strains and species of small laboratory animals. Three strains isolated from Apodemus spp. were similar to Bartonella species on the basis of phenotypic characteristics. Futhermore, genotypic analysis based on sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA and gltA genes and on DNA-DNA hybridization showed that the three isolates represented a distinct and new species of Bartonella. The name Bartonella birtlesii is proposed for the new species. The type strain of B. birtlesii sp. nov. is IBS 325T (= CIP 106294T = CCUG 44360T).

House mice (Mus domesticus) were recently introduced to Thevenard Island, off the northwest coast of Western Australia. This island is also habitat for an endangered native rodent, the short-tailed mouse (Leggadina lakedownensis). Thirty-three cases of locally acquired murine typhus were reported in Los Angeles County residents from May 1984 through February 1988. The effects of drugs has been studied on escape behaviour of rats following electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal grey, in order to assess the feasibility of using the latency to escape as a measure of experimental anxiety. 2. Escape latencies were decreased by methysergide and cyproheptadine, whilst lorazepam and chlordiazepoxide (CDP) increased the latencies. 3. ACTH marginally decreased escape latencies, and did not alter the response to lorazepam. 4. Difficulties associated with using this paradigm to detect anxiolytic or anxiogenic effects of drugs are discussed.

To determine the source of infection for the Japanese index case of human babesiosis, we analyzed blood samples from an asymptomatic individual whose blood had been transfused into the patient. In addition, we surveyed rodents collected from near the donor's residence. Examination by microscopy and PCR failed to detect the parasite in the donor's blood obtained 8 months after the donation of the blood that was transfused. However, we were able to isolate Babesia parasites by inoculating the blood sample into SCID mice whose circulating red blood cells (RBCs) had been replaced with human RBCs.
