Complete rehabilitation of paralyzed head and neck structures has been difficult, and attempts at reinnervation of striated muscles have not consistently succeeded. Recent studies have shown that disabled muscles can be electronically "paced." This, together with recent developments in microelectronics, has led to the concept of the Bionic Larynx. The current experiments involve transposed nerve-muscle pedicles used to selectively reinnervate larynges which were denervated, entirely detached from the animal except for their vascular supply, and then reimplanted. These pedicles were later stimu

To identify the spinal origin of the innervation of the bladder neck and pelvic floor muscles retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase and tritiated horseradish peroxidase was used in a technique combining histochemistry and autoradiography. This technique proved to be suitable for differential labeling of spinal cord neurons innervating two different targets, thus extension as well as overlap of different nuclei could be judged. The parasympathetic outflow was concentrated in the intermediolateral and intermediomedial gray matter of S2, the somatic innervation was derived mostly

We report a case of a 69-year-old man who developed tetraparesis and muscular pain under the therapy of prednisolone for several months. Diagnosis was sepsis due to pyomyositis with multiple septic pulmonary staphylococcus aureus abscesses. Antibiotic therapy with piperacillin and tazobactam resulted in a decrease of the inflammatory factors and improvement of the tetraparesis. Pyomyositis, common in tropical areas, is a suppurative infection of striated muscle. Immunodeficiency has been implicated in the development of pyomyositis in temperate climates.

Primary myositis (or inflammatory myopathies) comprises three main groups of diseases, based on clinical and immunohistochemical characteristics: polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and inclusion body myositis. Their clinical presentation and course are disparate, but a common characteristic is immune dysfunction-related inflammation of the striated muscles. Their etiologies are still not fully elucidated but associate environmental and, to a lesser degree, genetic factors. Nevertheless, considerable progress has recently been made in the understanding and management of these diseases.

Myasthenia gravis is very rare autoimmune disease of neuromuscular junction, which presents as a weakness and increased fatiquability of striated muscles. Formerly, myasthenia was largely constraining disease and often ended by death. Recently, advanced diagnostic methods and variety of therapeutic options allow the full compensation of the disease and the quality of patient life is restored. In this review, the methods used during the myasthenia treatment along with the description of the disease itself were detailed.

The right eye of a 1-year-old black infant with a painful blind eye was studied histologically. It contained a tumor at an advanced stage of growth. The tumor consisted of moderately large, round, and elongated undifferentiated cells and anaplastic cells with mitotic figures combined with multilayered, poorly differentiated epithelial cells that resembled the medullary epithelium of embryonic retina. Strap cells with cross striation typical of striated muscle were also present, together with islands of hyaline cartilage and areas of calcification.

BACKGROUND: Muscle activity contributes to the enhancement of facial aging deformity, blepharospasm, cerebral palsy spasticity, trismus, torticollis, and other conditions. Myotomy of the involved muscles in order to reduce the deformity has variable success rates due to muscle healing and regeneration of activity.
OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to investigate whether blocking striated muscle activity with Botulinum toxin (BtxA) during the healing time after myotomy alters the healing process and reduces long-term muscle activity.
METHODS: Eighteen Sprague Dawley rats where divided in

Abnormal suprasegmental influences of the brainstem and cerebellum on the developing motor unit during the histochemical stage of muscle development (20-28 weeks gestation) may alter the rate of maturation of striated muscle or may cause abnormal proportions and relative sizes of histochemical fibre types. Such aberrations without primary myopathic or denervative changes are commonly found in children with cerebral malformations, particularly associated with cerebellar hypoplasia. Upper motor neuron disease during embryonic life may explain histochemical alterations in some nonprogressive 'con

It was discovered fifty years ago that a minced skeletal muscle replaced in its bed is able to regenerate. This regeneration is due to the presence of quiescent muscle precursor cells so-called satellite cells in the adult muscle which proliferate and fuse to regenerate new centronucleated fibres when the muscle is damaged. These observations open therapeutic perspectives and, in this study, we attempted to test in the mouse whether fragments of minced muscle regenerate new fibres to fill the gap resulting from the trans-section and retraction of the extensor digitorum longus muscle (EDL). BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The pathophysiology of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is far from unraveled. Capturing all aspects of this bothersome condition in one theory remains challenging. The well-known Hammock and Integral theories, both from the early 90's, were successful in explaining a large proportion of the observations made in clinical practice. Nevertheless, some (pre)clinical observations cannot be explained by the current understanding. One of the issues concerns the pressure transmission. Is this process really a passive mechanical action, or is an additional active mec

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by the absence of the dystrophin protein and a properly functioning dystrophin-associated protein complex (DAPC) in muscle cells. DAPC components act as molecular scaffolds coordinating the assembly of various signaling molecules including ion channels. DMD shows a significant change in the functioning of the ion channels of the sarcolemma and intracellular organelles and, above all, the sarcoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria regulating ion homeostasis, which is necessary for the correct excitation and relaxation of muscles. This review is devoted t

INTRODUCTION: The complete primary repair of bladder exstrophy (CPRE) aims to restore normal anatomy through complete mobilization and reapproximation of the bladder neck and proximal urethra.
METHODS: The Peña stimulator has previously been used to identify musculature in the pelvis. The device is now used to distinguish intersymphyseal bands from pelvic floor and urethral sphincteric musculature during CPRE. The ability to distinguish the levator ani muscles from fibrotic bands assists the surgeon in identifying the appropriate extent of deep pelvic dissection during CPRE.
RESULTS: During

Desmin is the primary intermediate filament (IF) of cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle. By linking the contractile myofibrils to the sarcolemma and cellular organelles, desmin IF contributes to muscle structural and cellular integrity, force transmission, and mitochondrial homeostasis. Mutations in desmin cause myofibril misalignment, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired mechanical integrity leading to cardiac and skeletal myopathies in humans, often characterized by the accumulation of protein aggregates. Recent evidence indicates that desmin filaments also regulate proteostasis and cell

Desmin is an intermediate filament protein that in striated muscle is normally located at Z-bands, beneath the sarcolemma, and prominently at neuromuscular junctions. It is abundant during myogenesis and in regenerating fibers, but decreases in amount with maturation; in regenerating and denervated muscle fibers it is co-expressed with vimentin. Aggregates of desmin occur as nonspecific cytoplasmic bodies or cytoplasmic spheroid complexes, similar to the aggregates of keratin filaments in Mallory bodies or the neurofilament aggregates in Lewy bodies. In all three instances, alpha-B crystallin

Denervation of pelvic floor sphincter muscles is a feature of pelvic floor disorders. When severe, it may be accompanied by stress incontinence of faeces, or of urine. The extent of chronic partial denervation of these pelvic floor muscles can be quantified by electromyography (EMG), and its cause identified by electrophysiological studies of the motor innervation of these striated muscles. Damage to this innervation is often initiated by childbirth, but appears to progress during a period of many years so that the functional disorder usually presents in middle life. Incontinence develops in s

AIMS: To describe a case of rhabdomyomatosis of the lung unassociated with other external or visceral malformations in a newborn infant.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 26 weeks gestation newborn male with no relevant medical or family history presented a well-circumscribed solid area in the posterior mediastinum occupying the upper lobe of the right lung. The possibility of neuroblastoma or an extralobar pulmonary sequestration were excluded after laboratory and arteriographic studies. No visceral anomalies were found. At the age of 9 months the patient underwent a partial lobectomy, and he is free o

Congenital ptosis with poor levator function is now managed by frontalis suspension techniques. While this procedure is better than those used in the past, serious shortcomings exist. A technique producing more normal lid function would be a beneficial addition to surgical management. Since congenital ptosis is thought to be a focal myopathy, we investigated the potential of myoblast transfer therapy in myopathic levator palpebrae superioris. Satellite cells harvested from temporalis muscle were grown as clones, labeled with Dil, and transplanted into experimentally myopathic levator muscle of

Myalgia, myopathy and myositis are the most important types of muscle impairment in immune-mediated inflammatory arthropathies and connective tissue diseases. Multiple pathogenetic and histological changes occur in the striated muscles of these patients. Clinically, the most important muscle involvement is the one that causes complaints to the patients. In everyday practice, insidious symptoms present a serious problem for the clinician; in many cases, it is difficult to decide when and how to treat the muscle symptoms that are often present only subclinically. In this work, authors review the

The Popeye domain containing (POPDC) gene family consists of POPDC1 (also known as BVES), POPDC2 and POPDC3 and encodes a novel class of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) effector proteins. Despite first reports of their isolation and initial characterization at the protein level dating back 20 years, only recently major advances in defining their biological functions and disease association have been made. Loss-of-function experiments in mice and zebrafish established an important role in skeletal muscle regeneration, heart rhythm control and stress signaling. Patients suffering from musc
