[Cryostimulation factor supporting rehabilitation patients with multiple sclerosis and fatigue syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Fatigue is considered to be one of the most prevalent and disabling symptoms among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). According to different studies, fatigue is reported by 75-95% of patients. Fatigue syndrome considerably affects quality of life. Characteristic feature of fatigue syndrome in multiple sclerosis is its relapse caused by warmth. There are only a few researches into fatigue in multiple sclerosis. The most commonly used scale to estimate fatigue is Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Cryostimulation has been applied to treat depression. AIM OF THE STUDY: Comparison

Effects of sustained hypoxia on sternohyoid and diaphragm muscle during development.

Sustained hypoxia is a dominant feature of respiratory disease. Despite the clinical significance, the effects of sustained hypoxia on the f … not late development, effects that persisted after return to normoxia. Hypoxia-induced sternohyoid muscle fatigue was not attributable to fibre type transitions or to a decrease in oxidative capacity. Chronic supplementation with the superoxide scavenger tempol did not prevent hypoxia-induced sternohyoid muscle fatigue, suggesting that mechanisms unrelated to o …

Fatigue influences the dynamic stability of the torso.

Fatigue in the extensor muscles of the torso affects neuromuscular recruitment and control of the spine. The goal of this study was to test whether fatigue influences stability of dynamic torso movements. A controlled laboratory experiment measured the change in the maximum finite-time Lyapunov exponent, lambda(max), before and after fatigue of the extensor muscles. Non-linear analyses were used to compute stability from the embedding dimension and Lyapunov exponent recorded during repetitive dynamic trunk flexion tasks. Torso extensor muscles were fatigued to 60% of their unfatigued isometric

A Pediatric Case of Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis With Fatigue and Myalgia.

Periodic paralysis is a rare genetic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of sudden skeletal muscle weakness. Various factors can trigger this condition, including cold temperatures, abnormal potassium levels, physical activity, and consumption of certain foods. Periodic paralysis is considered benign and usually manifests as muscle weakness. Adult patients with hypokalemic periodic paralysis often experience symptoms such as myalgia and fatigue, whereas myalgia and fatigue are less common in children. We encountered a pediatric patient with hypokalemic periodic paralysis who presented

Effect of repeated bout effect induced by eccentric exercises on joint stiffness endurance in males.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the repeated bout effect induced by eccentric exercises on joint stiffness endurance. Twelve males performed fatigue tasks (5 sets of 50 hopping) three times: first fatigue task on one side (FFT), second fatigue task on the same side 2 weeks after FFT (SFT), and opposite fatigue task on the contralateral side (OFT). Ankle joint stiffness and electromyographic activities of the plantar flexor and tibial anterior muscles during drop jump using only the ankle joint were measured before and after the fatigue task. Active muscle stiffness w

Temporal strategy and performance during a fatiguing short-cycle repetitive task.

UNLABELLED: This study investigated temporal changes in movement strategy and performance during fatiguing short-cycle work. Eighteen participants performed six 7-min work blocks with repetitive reaching movements at 0.5 Hz, each followed by a 5.5-min rest break for a total duration of 1 h. Electromyography (EMG) was collected continuously from the upper trapezius muscle, the temporal movement strategy and timing errors were obtained on a cycle-to-cycle basis, and perceived fatigue was rated before and after each work block. Clear signs of fatigue according to subjective ratings and EMG manife

[Causes of CO2 retention in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease].

The mechanisms of chronic ventilatory failure in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are complex. This paper analyses the diverse available information: mechanical factors and gas-exchange, fighter vs. non-fighter, the ventilatory pattern theory and the fatigue threshold theory. Finally we comment on the evidence supporting the new concept that hypercapnia may develop to avoid or prevent fatigue. Indeed, it is very likely that chronic CO2 retention in COPD may develop by mechanical disadvantages of the inspiratory muscles rather than impairment of ventilation-perfusion ratios. This opens a f

Mechanisms of fatigue.

Fatigue is a common experience of individuals suffering from chronic illnesses. Mechanisms responsible for fatigue may be central or peripheral. Central fatigue may result from proximal events and include the neuromuscular junction and are subdivided into spinal and supraspinal. Peripheral fatigue arises from the muscle and predominately involves muscle bioenergetics or excitation contraction. Fatigue from chronic illnesses can be caused by several mechanisms. Electromyelography, transcranial magnetic stimulation, magnetic resonance imaging, and spectroscopy are helpful tools to clarify the ph

Fatigue and associated factors in 172 patients with McArdle disease: An international web-based survey.

McArdle disease is an autosomal recessive inherited disease caused by pathogenic variants in the PYGM gene, resulting in virtual absence of the myophosphorylase enzyme in skeletal muscle. Patients experience physical activity intolerance, muscle pain, and muscle fatigue. This study aimed to investigate other fatigue domains with the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) along with an investigation of potential contributing factors, including relevant disease and lifestyle-related factors. We conducted a survey in an international cohort of patients with McArdle disease. The survey includ…

Peripheral fatigue: high-energy phosphates and hydrogen ions.

Peripheral fatigue results from an overactivity-induced decline in muscle function that originates from non-central nervous system mechanisms. A common symptom of fatigue is a feeling of tiredness or weariness because of overexertion, such as that associated with intense or prolonged physical exercise. Fatigue is worsened by low physical fitness and chronic illnesses. These conditions may intensify fatigue to levels that limit physical and social functioning and severely diminish health-related quality of life. Although etiologic aspects of peripheral fatigue are often associated with regulato

Gender differences in fatigability and muscle activity responses to a short-cycle repetitive task.

PURPOSE: Epidemiological research has identified women to be more susceptible to developing neck-shoulder musculoskeletal disorders when performing low-force, repetitive work tasks. Whether this is attributable to gender differences in fatigability and motor control is currently unclear. This study investigated the extent to which women differ from men in fatigability and motor control while performing a short-cycle repetitive task. METHODS: 113 healthy young adults (58 women, 55 men) performed a standardized repetitive pointing task. The task was terminated when the subject's perceived exert

Do manual workers with persistent lifting-related LBP show different trunk muscle activity compared to manual workers with no history of LBP during repeated lifting?

OBJECTIVES: To investigate if manual workers with and without a history of LBP show different trunk muscle activity during repeated lifting? And explore if pain or fatigue is related to trunk muscle activity in people with LBP during repeated lifting? METHODS: This study compared peak and average muscle activity between manual workers with LBP (n = 21) and without a history of LBP (n = 16) during lifting. A box of 10% of the participant's body mass was lifted from the floor at a self-selected speed and posture. A 12-sensor trunk muscle surface electromyography (sEMG) protocol was used to comp

Modafinil reduces fatigue in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A: a case series.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, the most common hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, is a slowly progressive disorder characterized by diffuse muscle weakness and prominent distal atrophy that predominantly involves the intrinsic muscles of the feet and the peroneal muscles. It results in marked reduction in functional aerobic capacity during exercise and fatigue is commonly reported. To date, no pharmacologic treatment has been shown to be effective for treating fatigue in Charcot-Marie-Tooth. Modafinil is used to treat the symptoms of fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy.

Central origin of fatigability in Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome revealed by multimodal neuroimaging.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating chronic disease characterized by physical and mental fatigue, post-exertional malaise, muscle pain, headaches, and unrefreshing sleep. Fatigability refers to a reduction of muscular force over time despite willed effort and has a central and a peripheral component. We studied whether fatigability in ME/CFS is related to central or peripheral mechanisms. We recruited fifteen patients with ME/CFS and nineteen age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (with seven females in each group). Participants performed a fatiguing
